First, I was never a great chess player. I topped out around 1800 when I was 21. I started playing around age 12 and finished 3rd in the Michigan amateur when I was 14. Perhaps, it was just puberty, but I found that chess taught me to harness my powers of concentration. I think the common time controls back then were 40 moves in 2 hours. I quickly learned that not only did you have to be thinking when it was your move, but you also had to be thinking when it was your opponent’s move. Being able to play 3 games on a Saturday and 2 games on Sunday really trained my endurance.This discipline helped me to get far ahead of my peers in school. Chess forced me to visualize my thinking a bit more than I once did, which was very useful in both mathematics and biophysics. My first real job at 17 during my freshman year of college…TAing a class of 38 students in multivariate calculus. So, while I can’t say if great chess players are usually great at math/physics, I feel comfortable asserting that good chess players are likely going to have the skills to be able to be good at math/physics it that is something they wish to pursue.

This is a hard question to answer. Winning any tournament is a huge point of pride always. Winning with a team can be even more satisfying. I have been lucky enough to win a lot of tournaments individually and many more as a member of a team.
