It’s terrific. There’s a lot of nitpickers online, but a few weeks ago I picked the game back up and was completely sucked in. I highly recommend using player-made modifications (mods) to add to this enjoyment; now that the game has been out for a couple years, the mods are, quite frankly, astonishing! It changed my game completely, and added incredible hours of fun that I still am getting enjoyment from.(Before I go on, the mods I recommend are Amazing Follower Tweaks, Eli’s Armor Compendium, The Mercenary Pack, Homemaker Mod, Settlement Limits Slashed, Another Green Mod, Militarized Minutemen, Hairstyles by Azar, and the West Tek Tactical Optics. These basically make the Commonwealth greener, let’s you have many, many, MANY more options as you create settlements, adds a ton of armor into the game, beefs up the Minutemen by making them more like Vietnam vets, and creates some gear that will give you a tactical edge without breaking the game.)Without mods, I’d say the vanilla, (normal) game is definitely worth the price of admission, especially on PC where you can tweak the game with the command console if needed. I found the story to be personal, yet due to the story circumstances of the game, it was also able to be put on the back burner for environmental concerns. Do you go immediately out in the wilderness to find your son, or do you build a base first? Do you search as a lone wanderer or do you build an army at your back? How you approach the game is open ended and flexible; you’ll always have the next step in the main story on your quest log, but there’s a lot of roleplay that you can do to decide how to go forward.On one playthrough, I played as a mother who charged right through the story as fast as possible, and in another, as a broken and defeated father who, (after meeting Preston Garvey), recovered his will to fight and came after his son with the entire Commonwealth on his side and a troupe of companions to support him. There’s no right or wrong way to play.Compared to the other Fallout games, there’s ups and downs. Fallout 3 is MUCH tougher and has a steeper learning curve. Fallout 4 has the best graphics of the bunch and better overall game design, but it also holds your hands a bit. I’d add that in previous Fallout games you’d find settlements and factions that greatly impact your character; in Fallout 4, their impact on you isn’t quite as high. An example would be the Brotherhood of Steel: in previous Fallout games, they were the source of learning how to use power armor. In Fallout 4, no special skills are required, so kissing up to the Brotherhood isn’t necessary. I personally like that a lot, since it gives the player more agency in deciding which factions to work with without any skill penalty for doing so.It’s actually kind of neat, and something I enjoyed. Instead of just finding towns, (which you do, there’s a few established settlements), you can CREATE towns and settlements in Fallout 4. With some imagination and hard work, YOUR Commonwealth can beat the pants off of anything you see and find in the other games. Starlight Drive-In in my game became Starlight City, the great white jewel of the Commonwealth, thanks to a little help from console commands, the Homemaker Mod, Settlement Limits Slashed, and a few hours of work. I had five skyscraper towers of shining white aluminum and glass interconnected by bridges of steel. No way Megaton, Rivet City, or Diamond City beats that.Ultimately, Fallout 4 isn’t post-apocalyptic Skyrim; Skyrim has a wider variety of places to see, enemies to fight, and the DLC is very interesting. That doesn’t mean Fallout 4 isn’t good, it’s just different. Fallout 4 immerses you in survival, gray morality, and building settlements. And with the addition of player mods, the game gets even MORE fun since you can customize your game even further! Want to save your wife from dying and use her as a companion? Go for it! Want to change the looks of your companions faces and bodies? Do it! Want to build the settlement of your dreams? Why not?!The game is a blast! Don’t hesitate if you find it on a good sale!

Vault-Tec…Vault Tec’s entire canon is in complete disarray, but I’ll try to make sense of it for you. For canon purposes we are ignoring Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel (1 &2), Fallout Tactics Brotherhood of Steel, Van Buren, Fallout Extreme, cut content, Fallout Shelter, and Fallout Online.First Vault-Tec is a puppet, for the Enclave. This is established in Fallout 2 and remains a theme through the rest of the franchise. For your ease of reading I’m going to use an outline otherwise this is going to turn into a mess.Vault-Tec headquarters (national) is next to the blasted remains of Los Angeles (Boneyard), and the Los Angeles Vault that was used only for demonstration purposes. The only point in time the headquarters is shown to the player is during the intro sequence for Fallout 2Vault-Tec headquarters for the District of Columbia is located east of the Vernon Square Metro. This is only a regional headquarters office specifically to liaison with the federal government. This location contains no additional information other than the location of nearby vaults.Vault-Tec Regional HQ in Boston contains contradictory information that overtly subverts previously established lore from Fallout 2 considered canon. In this case “jet” being shipped to a vault when at the time it was not yet invented since it was invented during the events of Fallout 2. This location does not provide any information on Vault-Tec or it’s operations other than a plot of minor employee subversion.So far in the Fallout universe there are no remaining (operating) Vault-Tec locations or personnel excluding those operating on their own such as in the case with Fallout 4’s Vault DLC and unopened vaults. There is no known controlling entity other than speculating the Enclave issuing directives or overseeing the various assets of Vault-Tec. Therefore it is reasonable to assume the corporation is defunct or damaged beyond operation.Considering the state of the Fallout universe, and the locations of the Vault-Tec headquarters we can viably conclude the following information.The National Vault-Tec Headquarters has been completely and utterly destroyed, looted, as well thoroughly searched. How do I know this? The Unity established themselves in the Los Angeles area, they were a well trained and organized military force known as the Master's Army which was hell bent on finding “Prime Normals” (See:Etymology of pure and prime humans). In this search they even began to abduct caravans, and raid towns in an attempt to find more leads.The reason why the Master of the Unity faction was searching for these prime normals is due to the relatively low exposure to radiation that made them ideal candidates for the “dipping” process (See: Super mutant). The master had deftly identified a viable way (Thus far the only viable means of doing so, before Bethesda Retconned the F.E.V.) of transmuting normal humans into hulking abominations. However if they had been exposed to the now average background radiation of the wasteland the chances of them losing their mental capacity increased exponentially. This pushed the Master and his Lieutenant to aggressively pursue any leads discovered, with brute force if needed.The reason all of the above is important is due to the location of the Master and the Unity faction being near the Vault-Tec Headquarters. This would result in them searching it thoroughly if it was still in tact.However considering they (nor anyone else) did not have the information about the local vaults it is much more likely the location was completely destroyed. We can deduce this by the general devastation in the local area. From the West Tek research facility, Necropolis, and to the creeping ruins of Los Angeles where the headquarters were once located. Judging by the amount of damage in the region, and that a good portion of the local population traveled the ruins of Los Angeles from the The Cathedral occupied by the Children of the Cathedral to the Boneyard and Adytum which were the original inhabitants of the demonstration vault. One can then easily conclude that if there are any remains of the headquarters in Los Angeles it is that of ashes and rumors.Also considering in the Original Fallout titles the only large structures still standing are away from the main blast sites are those of hardened military installations. Considering Vault-Tec’s rather large building (pictured above) the chances of the structure surviving is impossible.Now that we have identified that Vault-Tec has effectively been left forgotten in the ashes of history we can now move onto the Enclave. Currently there are only a handful of known Enclave locations to have existed before their assumed collapse. However there is speculation there are more Enclave locationsNavarro which is the western California mainland outpost for transitioning troops, equipment, Vertibird (Fallout 2), and supplies to and from the local areas. This location is a re-purposed Poseidon Oil Refinery. It is assumed that some Deathclaw intelligence research was conducted at this location due to the Presence of Xarn. Navarro was later attacked by the NCR during the NCR-Enclave conflict .Enclave Oil Rig was the main command and control location for much of the Enclave government as well research in it’s western territory. A great deal of F.E.V. research was conducted at this location as well power armor advancements with Advanced power armor (Fallout 2), and Advanced power armor Mk II (Fallout 2). (Retconned in Fallout 4 for some reason, yet still considered canon creating a conflict in the lore.)Mariposa Military Base was the main facility conducting research on the Forced Evolutionary Virus. Bethesda Retconned the fact that all F.E.V. research was conducted here. The only reason the Enclave obtained a F.E.V. strain was through it’s excavation of the site which was formally under the control of the Master’s Army. This location is a major linchpin to the events of the Fallout Universe which concluded with the creation of two major factions, a great amount of unrest, and atrocities committed in the name of scientific progress. (The Bethesda’s retcon created a massive conflict as West Tek was not affiliated with Vault-Tec or the Enclave since they were a separate entity. The inclusion of F.E.V. at Vault-Tec locations makes no sense in the established continuity. This bears great significance as while Rob-Co Industries worked collaboratively on the Vaults construction they are also not affiliated with the Enclave or F.E.V. research. )Eastern Locations are mostly geared towards territory control, and command functions of the internal Enclave structure. No identification of new lore, progress, or development of the faction that is noteworthy is mentioned.What is known about how the Enclave influenced the Vault-Tec Corporation is that the Enclave’s shadow organization before the war consisted of government officials as well high ranking Vault-Tec and Poseidon Oil executives. This allowed them to plan out Project Safe House, and the more sinister Societal Preservation Program. Information was highly regulated and monitored to prevent anything from reaching the public or illuminating their plans. As a result only select individuals were informed of the various intentions, plans, or experiments planned for the 112 documented vaults constructed prior to the Great War.Due to the current state of pre-war America and the general frenzied paranoia brought about by famine, disease, leaked info on the F.E.V, debt, Canada’s Annexation, Resource Wars, and stricter employment regulations this was a relatively easy task for what was now a police state.Due to the limited knowledge of discovered vaults, and the fact that most records of Vault-Tec’s vault network has been obscured by the great war; its currently impossible to specifically state if Vault-Tec, or the Enclave have a secured operational facility. However judging by the provided information it is reasonable to conclude that Vault-Tec no longer exists as a functioning entity. Also likely is that they are no longer monitoring the documented 112 vaults as it was established that the Enclave assumed “control” of the vaults within their territory during the events of Fallout 2 and 3.I know this seems long winded, but believe me this is the short version.
