My parents were Harvard College Class of 1977. Bill Gates was also Class of 1977. I remember looking at my parents’ Freshman Register over a decade ago (before the creation of that other really famous Harvard dropout, Mark Zuckerberg, got popular, this was how new students matched names with faces) and there, staring back at me a few rows down from my mom, was 18-year-old Bill Gates.My mom has always been very Type-A. She was one of two students at her all-girls’ private school who were in the first calculus class at the neighboring all-boys’ school that allowed cross-registration (and when the teacher said he didn't think the girls could do the work and he wouldn't help them when they failed, she proceeded to prove him wrong by missing only one question total the entire year on all the tests), and her father was a pioneering physicist, so she was interested in doing something quantitative as her major. She took a Computer Science class and loved it. At the time, Harvard did not yet have a Computer Science department, so she ended up majoring in Engineering and Applied Physics (but, as she loves to say, she did no engineering and no applied physics).Programming in the mid-70s was very different from today. The students used paper tape to punch out their programs and handed them in to be run on the mainframe, and got the result back the next day. They also were mostly men. In one of her classes, the graduate student “teaching fellow” (TFs at Harvard are what every other university calls TAs, and run the breakout sections and provide assistance with the material and assignments) apparently had a crush on her — not only was she a women in classes that often didn't have any women, but she was smart and driven. She wasn't interested in him, but she learned that he was one of the employees of this new software firm that this dropout had started. After he graduated at the end of the year, he was going to move out to Albuquerque to work for the new company (this was long before they made the move to Redmond).She was intrigued by the idea, and asked the guy if he thought it might be a good idea for her to go work for the company — maybe even to drop out like Bill did. He said that it was interesting work, and it paid well, but that Bill really rode his employees hard and expected a lot from them, and tended not to be very understanding if they couldn't deliver. I believe the words she used when she was telling this story to me were “hard to work for.” On that basis, she decided maybe she wasn't going to pursue working there.I'm sure Bill Gates has mellowed out over the intervening decades, but I am glad she didn't go to work for him, for a purely selfish reason. After she decided she wasn't going to drop out and go work at Microsoft, she wanted to do some soul-searching and make sure she was going down the right academic and career path. She went on leave for a term, during which time she worked with at-risk Native American youth on a reservation up in North Dakota. When she came back, she went to a party and met this guy, who she would end up marrying. So I probably wouldn't be here today if she went to work for Bill. Turns out, Bill Gates being hard to work for was a very good thing for me!
