What was your biggest culture shock visiting New York City?

I am an Indian and I have been staying in New York City for the past one year. Please understand that New York was the first Western city that I have visited in my entire life and the culture shocks that I describe below may not be relevant for New York exclusively. So, now that we are done with the disclaimer, here we go:Tips: Like I mentioned, I come from India where we generally tip in restaurants only (not in cabs etc.). The tip amount is also mostly based on the discretion of the customer. After coming here, I learnt that the tips form a major percentage of the incomes of the service providers. People here pay a minimum of 15% percent tip even for service they don’t like. It took me some time to get used to this culture. On the first week of coming to NYC, I went to a restaurant and I was shocked to see that they have put in the suggested tips in the bill. Initially I thought that was pretty rude, but my colleague explained the scenario here.Facilities for disabled/differently-abled people: This was more of a happy surprise than a shock. In India its very difficult for disabled people to navigate the streets. The streets are almost always crowded and there are hardly any initiatives from the government’s side to help them (except for reserving seats in public vehicles). In New York, I was surprised to see that all corners of the pavements are flattened out so that people can navigate themselves in wheel chairs. I was so surprised to see that in the public buses there are motorized steps with the help of which people on wheelchairs can easily get on buses. But what impressed me most was the attitude of the people. Even in a city like NYC, where everybody is busy all the time, no one shows any impatience when somebody on wheelchair gets on/disembarks the bus. I am not sure that the attitude would have been same in India.Ramblers: Before coming to the U.S I had heard that NYC has its share of homeless people. What I did not know was that there are so many people talking to themselves on the streets/subways (sometimes quite loudly). The ramblings range from whispering to shouting at the top of their voices. Once I was walking down the famous 42nd street, when a guy came out of nowhere, stood in front of me, shouted “Brooklyn!” and then just went away. I am still to figure out the reason for these. Would be great if some body can throw some light in the comments section.Diversity: India is pretty diverse in nature but the diversity that I saw in New York City was unparalleled. If someone stands near Times Square for 15 minutes, he would meet people from at least 40 countries.Tourists: Every second person is a tourist here. In my initial days, if i asked somebody for directions etc, mostly I was met with the answer “ Sorry! we are tourists also “.Care of pets: This is something that might not be exclusive to New York. But the level of care and attention that people provide to their pets is very impressive. Remarkable time, energy and money invested on the pets.Greeting Strangers: It’s not uncommon for people to greet strangers in coffee shops/offices on the street. This is something which I was not used to India. I thought this is a very sweet culture , where a smile goes a long way. I was a bit taken aback when on Halloween a lady walked up to me on the street and hugged me and wished me Happy Halloween!Halal Carts: This is something which I think is exclusive to New York. They are like tiny yellow bubbles of gastronomic delight at each street corner, each one encapsulating a little bit of New York in itself: fast and laid back, dazzling and pale, poetic and prosaic at the same time.Edit: One major culture shock that I missed out.7. Public Urinals: Again, this is something which might not be specific to New York. There are no divisions between two subsequent urinals. Initially, I found it very embarrassing and awkward.

How is NYC in reality?

I’m a native New Yorker, but have lived in 7 states and traveled extensively. Here are a few observations about living in New York City:New York City is not just Manhattan. Living in Manhattan (and a few gentrified neighborhoods in other boroughs) is very expensive. Life in New York City can cost a lot less money than many people think. The key is learning how to live here. Housing is very expensive compared to most other places, but there are many counterbalances. We have great, 24-hour public transportation, so a car is unnecessary for most residents, saving many thousands of dollars per year.Outside of Manhattan and gentrified neighborhoods, food is not very expensive. I get sticker shock when I see supermarket and green grocery prices in other cities I travel to. For example, food prices in my neighborhood tend to be 1/3 to 2/3 less than in Manhattan.Clothing costs are much less than other places. For example, I hardly ever need to spend more than $8 for a good quality shirt or more than $15 for pants. Just yesterday, I bought 2 nice shirts in a store for $4 each. Good quality business suits in my neighborhood can be bought for under $200.Apartments are small, but outside of Manhattan, one can find 800+ square foot apartments at rents that are less than Manhattan’s by 50%.Our ethnic, religious and racial diversity is breathtaking, and we live in harmony.Although some restaurants are very expensive, you can get a great meal at ethnic restaurants for well under $20.We enjoy many free or low cost cultural activities of all kinds all over NYC. Through the free theater club I belong to, I pay less than $60 to go to Broadway shows, $30 for off-Broadway and $5 for off-off-Broadway plays. My experience has been that our off-off-Broadway is about the same quality as theater in other places I’ve lived. We have an incredible number of great museums and three wonderful public library systems. The City University provides very high quality education, full or part time, at (comparatively) low cost. Very soon, low and middle income students will not have to pay tuition at the City or State Universities.Staten Island has much to see. Many buildings predate the revolutionary war! You can take the ferry from NYC but the trains and buses on the Island are a bit less frequent than in other boroughs. Still worth the extra effort to check out.I know many people who moved to New York from other places. My impression is that it takes about 6 months to get acclimated. If you are a city person, once you figure out how to live here, you realize that there is no other place like it in America.

Feedbacks from Our Clients

Good level of customisation and branding, even on basic tiers. I also really like the ability for signers to upload documents as part of the signing process.
