The biggest lesson that I have learned is the importance of differentiating between the people in the 2nd and the 4th quadrant (refer to the graph). It is easy to identify people in the 1st and 3rd quadrants. The first quadrant people are rockstars and high performers who get both recognition and visibility. Over time, these guys turn out to become the senior heads of organizations or successful entrepreneurs. The people in the third quadrant are probably not in your organization or are going to be fired soon.Now the important part. The people in the second quadrant are the ones we should be most cautious about. These are the people who impress others easily. They leave a lasting impression on people because of their ability to talk about anything. They are full of energy and are easy to hang out with. However, their knowledge is limited. That’s why they manage to rise rapidly during the initial stages of their career, but their progress slows down after a while. And that’s why these people end up making up majority of the middle management. Now, things get ugly when you (someone who does not belong to the 2nd quadrant) end up reporting to these guys. Your knowledge is never appreciated by these people because either they feel threatened by you or they genuinely don’t have the ability to recognize talent. Moreover, they try to impose their own success formula on you. They would, however, like you to do the hard work so that they can take all the credit for it.So how to identify these people?They love talking about ‘who’ more than ‘what’ or ‘why’They like to talk about themselves, how hard their life has been and how they managed to reach where they areThey can never give a straight forward answer to your questionThey will give you bits of life advice like :“Education means nothing. Anyone can mug-up and get marks nowadays. You should be street smart”“You should get more visibility. The CEO should know you by your first name”“Play the right game. Learn office politics.”“Learn to small talk”In comparison, people in the 4th quadrant are the ones who get frustrated with time because the 2nd quadrant people have made the work culture toxic. These are the people who keep things moving but are not recognized enough. These are the guys who will help you with your personal development and learning.
