PDF Editor FAQ

If someone asks a health related question, is telling them nothing more than "go see a doctor" coming from a place of privilege? Not everyone can go to a medical professional, or the physician(s) they can visit may not have an adequate answer.

If it is a personal health issue on a site like this and the person answering is a legal physician then the law gets involved and consequences will possibly go very badly . A regular person has their 1st Amendment right of free speech to give some sort of advice . However when a physician gives some medical advice this can be viewed as practicing medicine without a good faith examination. This is especially true when someone say on Quora is saying they have something red or a lump and is asking what it is.Quora and sites like this must not be a place to get medical care in my opinion. The issue of telemedicine is an issue when there has never been any contact between physician and patient nor a legal contract between them. Thus the statement “ please go see your doctor” is advice to really get care and official legally binding care . Putting doctors on the spot to make diagnosis and or treatment on line is now a thing with video visits. But please realize that there needs to be some rules and legality involved and follow up from the physicians point of view.It is not that we necessarily want to be paid for work , rather there are legal implications of duty to care and follow up . This is fine when the patient belongs to a health care company and video visits have become the norm.None of that is true on a site like Quora. It is not about payment as much about legally following guidelines and lawsuits.

Why do some older, seasoned nurses not run to the patient's room during a code blue at a hospital?

They may not run to the patients room as you state because the patient may not be assigned to them during the code. Codes need to be fluid and controlled. If there are too many people in the room, it can be chaotic. It is not uncommon to clear the room except for the team who is required. Simple statement- “If you do not need to be in here, please leave”. If a code occurs, the nurse assigned to the patient will be in the room, the nurse in charge of the shift (usually) and perhaps director of the floor/unit will be around. There is usually a code team for the hospital that will ensue and will have ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) abilities. The designated floor may have a nurse who also have ACLS.Here is the most common people beyond spectators who will be in the room:—Physician (s) in larger hospitals for sure 1-2 (Anesthesiologist and/or Emergency Physician) to manage airway and run the code. If the attending is in the area, he/she will be present or at very least be notified. A Nurse may run the code in the absence of physician (at smaller hospital, until physician arrives, etc.), including a seasoned nurse you refer.—The team also will consist most likely a Nurse from ED (Emergency Department) or other critical care area (ICU, CCU, MICU, STICU- or with Pediatric Populations (PICU, NICU). 2 people at least required for compressions as this can be taxing. Another nurse will be recording the code of all actions taken from times of events as intubation for airway and breathing, compressions for circulation , medications delivered, and more, all in efforts to have the rhythm of the heart again if cardiac to include defibrillation.—Respiratory Therapist and Radiology Tech as well as even an EKG tech will/may be present. There will be labs and blood gases as well as possible x-rays depending on the physicians call /order for need. There needs to be removal of secretions and monitor for abdominal distensions, and of course rhythm monitoring of the heart.—A “runner”(s) may be present to run labs back and forth, obtain blood or other requested items of need.—A pharmacist may be included at training or other hospitals to mix or get ready flowing the algorithm of the person running the code.—A chaplain will be around for support for patient and family and friends. This can vary depending on size of hospital, type of hospital, etc. Nurses (Seasoned and not will be involved, directly or indirectly ). While this code is ongoing , staff is required to care for the rest of the patients' needs in a very busy shift and cover for those involved with the code.Thanks.

My mother suffers from chronic Hepatitis-B. Have any new medicines been discovered to cure Hepatitis B?

I sense the urgency and anxiety in your question but unfortunately, there's currently no cure for Hepatitis B. Pre-clinical models are typically mouse models, even the study you reference (Ebert, Gregor, et al. "Eliminating hepatitis B by antagonizing cellular inhibitors of apoptosis." Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences112.18 (2015): 5803-5808.Page on pnas.org). Results from such models typically take years to translate to humans. In fact, more often such pre-clinical data progress no further because they fail in higher animals or humans. In the case of Hepatitis B virus (HBV), there's currently no cure, only treatment to control virus (remission) and prevent irreversible liver damage. Hepatitis B Rx (treatment) is complex, dynamic and critically based on periodically scheduled tests forPresence and amount of circulating HBV DNA and antigen levels.Assessment of liver function.Regular blood tests monitor forPresence of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) antigens and DNA.Antigens include HBsAg (quantitative surface Hepatitis B surface antigen) and HBeAg (Hepatitis e antigen).Assessment of liver function by assessing levels of serum alanine aminotrasferase (ALT), logic being healthy liver = low levels of serum ALT.Risk for developing HCC (Hepatocellular carcinoma), usually by measuring blood levels of AFP (alpha-fetoprotein) and an ultrasonograph every 6 months. If patient >40 years of age, liver biopsy to assess inflammation and fibrosis. Results of these tests are then used to determine best course of action w.r.t. Rx.Typically Rx is several months-long to even life-long.Physicians treating patients for HBV should follow Rx guidelines set forward by regional Associations for the Study of the Liver. For example, the American (AASLD), European (EASL) and Asian-Pacific (APASL) Associations for the Study of the Liver published their guidelines for Hepatitis B Rx in 2009, 2012, and 2012, respectively. At the least, I hope this answer helps you understand whether your mother's treating physician(s) are following the latest published consensus HBV Rx guidelines of experts in the field. This answer relies on the 2012 Asia-Pacific guidelines published here: Liaw, Yun-Fan, et al. "Asian-Pacific consensus statement on the management of chronic hepatitis B: a 2012 update." Hepatology international 6.3 (2012): 531-561. Page on psu.eduFirst, a glossary of terms to help understand key terms used to denote HBV disease features and Rx outcomes.Next, most recent (2012) Rx available in Asia-Pacific. According to Liaw et al, these include interferon-alpha (IFN-a), pegylated IFN (Peg-IFN)-a2a and a variety of nucleos(t)ide analogs such as lamivudine (LAM), adefovir (ADE), entecavir (ETV), telbivudine (TEL), tenofovir (TDF). They also note 'Peg-IFNa2b has been approved for the treatment of chronic HBV infection in a few countries. Thymosin-a1 has also been approved in some countries in Asia. Clevudine has been approved only in Korea and the Philippines'. However, IFN-alpha Rx has several side-effects which include flu-like symptoms, headache, fatigue, muscle pain, hair loss. So IFN-alpha Rx is usually of fixed duration followed by 6 to 12 months of observation.Liaw et al summarize their chronic HBV Rx recommendations in the following self-explanatory figures.Key item to note from their figures is decision to start Rx is based on circulating HBV DNA and ALT levels. They recommend that Rx should start if person has persistently elevated serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels that are at least 2 times higher than the upper limit of laboratory reference (ULN), provided the two tests for serum ALT levels were done at least 1 month apart. HBV patients diagnosed with liver cirrhosis have a specific Rx plan. While Rx is available for controlling HBV, eradication is rare. Thus, compliance of patient in regularly taking the drugs, availability and cost of the drugs, and potential side-effects are all critical issues for patients and caregivers. Thanks for the A2A, Anonymous.

Feedbacks from Our Clients

We wanted an easy-to-use form builder with lots of features at a reasonable price to create forms to gather information for our customers as well as internal communications. We had been using Formstack for the past year or so. Formstack has an intuitive UI that produces clean looking forms easily with most of the features we needed at the basic paid level with helpful, prompt email support. However, we are now able to get even more features at a lower price still with great email support from CocoDoc. Their seemingly endless number of Widgets (included with our account, even the free trial), provide far more features than we could have ever gotten with Formstack even with paid add-ons. You can even fully edit forms on mobile devices. We were already planning on making the switch, but signed up now with the 50% off deal and saved even more.
