The substance is mundane but the outcome was terrible and creepy.By the time I started running ambulance calls on Ronnie he had already experienced his major accident. The other medics told me that they would be called to various locations around the town on “man down” complaints only to find Ronnie lying in an alleyway or against a building with a sock on his face. Ronnie was a “huffer”. Huffers inhale volatile substances like paint or gasoline in order to get high. Apart from the rapid onset I can’t say that I understand the attraction at all. The huffer typically experiences acute altered mental status and then a splitting headache. Ronnie liked to use silver paint from a spray can. He would spray it into a sock and then hold the sock over his mouth and nose and inhale deeply. He would typically lose consciousness after just a few minutes and if the sock didn’t fall away from his face, he would stay that way until someone saw him and called EMS.One night he indulged himself and awoke to find the police standing over him. He was disoriented and tried to run away. He ran for the train tracks and tried to jump onto a moving train. He fell off and was tumbled underneath. He lost both his arms and one of his legs. But, he lived. By the time I met him he was confined to a wheelchair and he continued to huff paint by trapping the spray can of silver paint between his torso and the stump remaining of his left arm. Witnesses reported seeing him huffing paint this way and propelling himself down the street in his wheelchair, using his remaining leg to push.We would get calls on him on a weekly basis. We would invariably find him sitting in his wheelchair in a completely disheveled manner. He would have silver spray paint all over his face and arm stump. He would seem psychotic and we would have to take him to the ER and find a way to also get his wheelchair into the ambulance. That was because he would invariably elope from the ER before his treatment was completed. I probably ran a dozen calls on Ronnie in a year. My partners, about the same.Right after I left my job at this EMS service, one of my prior partners called me and told me they ran Ronnie’s last call. Unlike prior contacts this one was at his home. He died with a sock stuck to his face. In a twist of irony his home was stuffed with paintings. Ronnie had been an artist of sorts before his accident. Afterwards, he somehow taught himself to paint by placing the brushes in his mouth. My friend told me that his paintings were amazing.

If I am directing traffic around what is obviously a crime scene, fire scene, ambulance call, or something else, and traffic is backing up, it is *NOT* the time to either ask for directions, or ask me what happened.If I’m directing traffic, odds are, I have NO idea what’s happening in there. No, you can’t stop and look, either. Keep moving.We had a report of a two toned pick up truck, used in a violent armed robbery. One of our officers stopped a vehicle matching the description, and effected a felony, or “high-risk stop”.So, while I’m standing behind the only available cover, a huge oak tree, with a shotgun leveled at the passenger, I felt a tug on my sleeve. I managed to avoid a sudden heart attack, or need for new pants, but only barely.Behind me is an 80–90 year old woman, about three and a half feet tall, asking how to get to Atlantic City. I asked her if she was possibly able to figure out this was not a good time to ask me? She had no clue. I asked her VERY nicely to go back, sit in her car, flashers on, and I would give her directions, just as soon as we finished. It never dawned on her that the shotgun might have indicated something was amiss.She was on the correct road, she just needed to go about 5.3 more miles or so. She and her girlfriends were going gambling, LOL.

It was not quite assault but a serious injury. My brother was seriously hurt at school at lunch time. No teacher’s were on duty and he had to be taken to the office by an eight year old classmate. From there he was taken to hospital by ambulance. Lip cut right through from mouth to nose.My mother couldn’t get a straight answer from the school about what happened, so asked a neighbour to find out what happened. The neighbour was a senior figure at the department of education and he asked for the school incident report. None filed.The school denied incident occurred despite the ambulance call being logged. Full inspection of the school was ordered from Principal down. Again the Principal denied that the incident occurred as teachers were drinking (last week of school, it was the 1960’s). Asked who was in duty and full report of what happened or else!This differed substantially to doctors report as teacher was not there as supposed to be. My brother was kicking an open can with a friend. His friend kicked it hard and the jagged edge of the can got my brother in the face.Teacher did not know when or where incident occurred or the nature of the injury. Goodbye. Principal lied and falsified documents. Allowed to quit before being sacked. several other teacher’s failed competency hearings and got reprimanded, transferred and in one case, lost their job. Less to blame as poor leadership ruled.Parents working class but mum knew the official through church before they moved to our area. School principals just can’t look at a working class person and think they won’t have contacts. Career suicide. It is not just the wealthy who know people!
