1. Some units require everyone to take leave at the same time. You'll know if you are in one of those units.2. You won't be able to take leave if you are deployed.3. Your squad/team has to manage staff to ensure that they have enough personnel on hand for normal maintenance, etc. It's unlikely that you'll get leave if everyone with the same MOS on your squad is asking for leave, unless it is planned/approved.4. For most units, planning leave is like planning your vacation with a civilian job. You talk with your boss, make sure everything is covered, fill out the forms, get it approved, etc. It's not a big deal. I took a month off to go tour Europe once when I was in the Army.

In a combat unit, people who are constantly looking for a reason to avoid frontline duty are just a small minority.You have made your decision when you signed up, and not many soldiers regret their choice before they haven’t been in a battle. After they’ve seen combat, however, the initial enthusiasm of getting some action usually decreases rapidly while at the same time, the number of “combat dodgers” is constantly rising.So, how you make sure you don't get sent to the frontline anymore? There are several options:Got to your commanding officer and ask for a transfer to a non-combat unit. Chances are slim that your request gets approved, but you’ll never know unless you try.Cause disciplinary problems! Getting drunk just before a combat operation will get you into a lot of trouble (prison) but it will also keep you away from the enemy's bullets.Medical problems. You can either fake a physical illness, for example, back pain, or you can try to convince your army psychiatrist that you’re not right in your head.Volunteer for non-combat-related jobs in your unit. Every combat unit has a number of jobs that are relatively safe. Field maintenance, liaison with other units, or food and ammunition supply might be such tasks.Except for the first option on my list (transfer request), I’ve seen soldiers using all of these “hacks”. The last one is by far the best: you can stay in your unit, nobody will call you a coward (at least not straight into your face), and you’ll still get all the little benefits that come with serving in a combat outfit.
