Alright [cracks knuckles]. Just as a bit of fun, I’ll lay out the skeleton of my own personal DC cinematic universe under the presumption that I have powers that far exceed even the most iron-fisted Warner Bros. executive. There are aspects of the current DCEU that I do like and see no reason to dispense with in my hypothetical franchise. My familiarity with the full roster of DC comics is uneven so some of my suggestions will be comprehensive while others will be bare bones. Hopefully my personal fan-casting won’t come across as too silly.-THE DC CINEMATIC UNIVERSE-PHASE ONEMAN OF STEELDirected by George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road)Pitch: Borrows several elements from Snyder’s film but dispenses with the morose moral arc and livens things up with more color and aspiration. Metropolis has a distinctive retro-chic aesthetic. Mirror the 1978 film’s sweeping narrative by beginning with the destruction of Krypton (by Brainiac in this origin), Kal-El spending some time in Kansas with childhood like Pete Ross & Lana Lang to him moving to Metropolis and becoming a reporter for the Daily Planet. Dispense with the flashback-structure of the Snyder film. Kal can reveal himself as Superman to the world at the midpoint before Zod and a small band of surviving Kryptonians arrive to conquer the planet (or for a more specific purpose that I don’t have the mental energy to devise as of now). Characters casually reference the existence of Batman and Lex Luthor. Bruce resists Barbara Gordon’s entreaties of apprenticeship while fending off assassins hired by the mafia kingpin Roman Sionis. Gotham is a rotting Rome crippled by corruption and buckling under the unification of the mafias, who are rallying together to take down the Dark Knight. A chiaroscuro noir aesthetic with more attention paid to how crime impacts the communities of Gotham. Per the suggestion of YouTuber ComicsExplained, implement Bruce’s relationship with an orphaned kid from the ‘War on Crime’ story arc as a subplot that serves as the picture’s emotional spine and provides its redemptive ending after the main conflict is settled. Lex Luthor can appear in a nifty cameo as a fellow titan of industry meeting with Bruce. Hal is a brash pilot who has an indefatigable willpower that is fueled by a burdensome chip on his shoulder. He is whisked away to the Lantern Corps and agrees to his role as a space patroller under the guidance of Thaal. He is thrust into the war against the Red Lanterns, who are lead by the justifiably-aggrieved Atrocitus. A space adventure that broadens the franchise universe to galactic proportions. A well-meaning but antisocial young man whose father is wrongly imprisoned, he is tempted to use his new abilities for self-enrichment and other unethical pursuits. Enter Leonard Snart, a professional criminal whose gang of flamboyant thieves are making a splash in the city with a series of theatrical heists, armed with high-tech weaponry that was secretly provided by Lex Luthor. Barry, while squaring off against Snart, he can’t help but feel drawn to the charismatic and persuasive thief. The formidable opponents are Black Adam and Poison Ivy (refashioned in this franchise as an ancient being akin to the Gods established in Wonder Woman). The two Gods, in league in Savage, provoke the hidden kingdom of Atlantis and threaten a war between humanity and the ocean dwellers. Our heroes learn to work together to diffuse the conflict and fight back against the evil trio, only for Savage to reveal that his ultimate goal was to gather all of Earth’s super-humans together to form an all-powerful legion and impose order over humanity (except for Batman, who he rejects due to his lack of powers). Hush, real name Thomas Elliot, is a deranged childhood friend of Bruce who has figured out his identity as Batman and teamed with Hugo Strange (he was a former patient at Arkham). They orchestrate Bruce’s abduction and incarceration in Arkham while Hush, who has underwent extensive plastic surgery to look like Bruce, assumes his identity at Wayne Enterprises. The second half of the film is Bruce Wayne trapped in Arkham and surrounded by some of Gotham’s most notorious criminals (Victor Zsasz, Harvey Dent, etc.). Only Barbara Gordon, donning the mantle of the Bat, can rescue him. As a capper, the Joker makes an appearance at the climax of the film, when Bruce is most vulnerable in Arkham.
