Let me tell you what happened on my first Night at IIT Roorkee.Ah! What a night!!Backstory -All my registrations, hostel room allotment and mess enrollment were done.Classes were to start from Monday while the students had to join the hostel on Friday itself.I was unaware that no one was allowed outside the hostel after 9 pm, and, daily a biometric attendance was taken in the night!So, I stayed with my family in a nice hotel outside, till Sunday. I had a lot of fun.On Sunday evening, my family left, and I joined my hostel.Now in that night-It was around 9 pm. I was exhausted after all the shifting work.I was resting on my bed. As I was about to sleep, someone knocked at my door.**I was summoned by the warden of the hostel!**I got tensed because I had heard that he is very harsh.I went to the hostel office and introduced myself to the warden.Warden (sternly) : Where did you go missing for the past three days?I (nervously) : Umm…Sir…. I was ill, so I stayed with my parents outside.Warden (relentlessly) : Then why didn’t you inform anyone here?I (anxiously) : I was so unwell that I did not get time to do that, Sir.Warden (impatiently) : Oh really? … All right….How are you feeling now?I (a bit positive) : I am feeling good now.Warden (sternly) : Are you sure?I (fearfully, confused) : Umm…Yes…Sir!**He then handed me a very large file containing the registration forms of all the freshly joined students.****He asked me to count the number of forms!**I was taken aback.I sat in the corner and started counting briskly.The forms were very clumsily placed. Many of them were even stuck together due to the adhesive used in sticking the photos. Moreover, I was very tired. Yet, I counted sincerely.It took me about 15 minutes to count.I (emphatically) : Sir! Done… There are 972 forms!Warden (with a smirk) : Incorrect!… Count’em again. You are not going anywhere till you get the right count.I was blown away! I even started to regret joining IITR!However, I kept my cool. Went back to the corner and started counting. This time I was very careful and patient.After 30 minutes or so, I was done counting. Guess what…I got two more than my previous attempt!I went to the warden and confidently said him that there are 974 forms.He smiled and replied, “OK! You may go now”.I smiled back and said “Thank You!”.**If he had said that my count was wrong, then I would have definitely thrown the file on his table and asked him to count himself…but who knows**That night, I learnt not to take the college rules for granted!
