I like Ron, personally. He is a great character in many ways. However, like many of the Harry Potter characters, he does have significant flaws. The problem is, those flaws are hard to find in many Quora answers in the past year or so (from what I’ve seen - and I’d be happy to be proven wrong :)).In spite of that, it’s important to principally evaluate a character by how they are portrayed in the books, rather than what is said about them. After all, it’s not their fault if the movies or fans don’t get them quite right. If you dislike Ron as he is in the books, you’re of course perfectly entitled to your opinion.I do understand the reason why many recent Quora answers emphasize his good qualities and hardly mention his flaws; they are justifiably upset and want to counteract damage that has been done to him:The movies sadly left out or downplayed a lot of Ron’s best moments and qualities.As a result, Ron was for quite a long time disregarded, disliked and even hated by many Harry Potter fans after the movies came out (while he was quite popular before the movies).He still is much-berated on some other sites (so I’ve been told; I am not on those sites myself).Hermione, on the other hand, was portrayed in the movies as having much less flaws than in the books, and her good qualities were exaggerated. She wasn’t all that popular before the movies, but after them, people began to love her and view her as almost perfect.But the problem is, now the pendulum (on Quora at least) has largely swung the other way: Ron has a large fanbase, while Hermione is often downplayed or disliked.Why is this a problem? Because only ever emphasizing a character’s good qualities is not the most effective way to defend them in the long run. Eventually some people might begin to think, “Wait a minute, Ron does have some big flaws. Why aren’t people mentioning them?” If such wonderings gain momentum, this can eventually do damage to perceptions of Ron. I’m sure the last thing anyone defending Ron wants is for a reaction to happen and the pendulum to swing back against him.What’s the answer? Balance. Ron has great attributes AND significant flaws, and he grows throughout the books. So does Hermione, and so do many other characters in the books. Ron is a fully-rounded, realistic character.And really - what more is needed to defend him? If the light is turned onto the nuanced portrayal of the books - where he first found his popularity - it could stop the pendulum, and centre it on the full character he truly is.Each member of the Trio had their strengths and flaws, and they all balanced each other out beautifully. Harry and Hermione loved Ron for the totality of who he was. And what better praise could Ron receive? The competition for MS in CS is very intense. The principal evaluating criteria are acads and research experience. Then the differentiating factor is GRE score of which quants is the important factor. Now all put together, perhaps it has fallen below the competitive applications.Who was your advisor and how did you select the universities? The only closest target was ASU which is about 60th rank or so in computer science category. UMASS perhaps is the highest rank ( around 20) in your category.

CS grads go into four general areas:Technical support - this is relatively uncommon, just because the technical needs are relatively low, but it’s fine as a starting point for a career, and where I started (although I didn’t major in CS)Operations - system/network/database administration, etc.; just generally configuration and monitoring and fixing systems, which is great for CS majors who don’t principally want to programSoftware development - this includes software engineers (who are principally evaluated on their code), QA/testing, tech writer/tech comm, and business analysisNon-computing jobs - I have a senior approaching graduation who wants to be a beat cop
