My Mom had a rule.Write the thank you note before you cash the check.In other words… sit down and write that thank-you note before you take the gift and go your merry way using it.Let me tell you - an un-cashed check, fully loaded gift card, or unopened game is a wonderful motivator for remembering to write a prompt note of thanks!Obviously she didn’t make us leave a new toy from a favorite aunt in the box while we wrote! But the principle was there: you write before you have a chance to forget about it.This was interesting because it created a bit of a conflict with her other rule of thanks: tell the person exactly what you appreciate most.That can be a little tricky! But I’ve found that a note of thanks expressing how much you’re looking forward to going shopping, and you’ve been eyeing a certain special item, and you’re so blessed and grateful to be able to go get it just flows better.When you’re writing “thanks for the gift card! I went shopping and got a new toy I really love!” it doesn’t quite stack up against “thanks for the gift card! I’m especially excited because I’ve been really wanting to visit that store for a long time - I’ve heard the _____ they have is amazing, and I cannot wait to try it!”.It makes the giver feel like the gift keeps on giving.Same with cash or checks. I’ve found that the tone of a prompt thank-you prior to spending it often comes out as more genuine and excited when that $ is burning a hole in my purse rather than just existing as a memory!

A lot of people will say it’s about regional pride, which is true, but the “region” in question is a fluid term. You’ll see a lot of Confederate flags* in southern Illinois, for example. Illinois was a Union state. Lincoln was from here, even. You have to pass by at least two rural houses with Confederate flags in front of them on your way to visit Lincoln’s childhood home outside of Springfield.It’s more of a rural thing than it is a Southern thing nowadays.And it’s sometimes flown more for spite than pride. Nothing does more for Confederate flag sales than the media or a celebrity making a big deal out of how offensive they are. Some people want to offend urbanites, the media, leftists, celebrities, etc… It’s basically a highly-visible middle finger to all things liberal in America.I’ll bet there’s been a spike in sales of Betsy Ross flags since Nike pulled their shoes with that flag on it, because Colin Kaepernick said that flag was offensive. If there’s a single company that has the market cornered on Betsy Ross flags, they could write a public thank you note to Kaepernick. Hopefully he would respond to it, claiming to be offended, or the media would do a story about the thank you note, and sales would spike once more.The best thing that ever happened to Chik-Fil-A’s sales was some liberals getting offended by the pro-traditional-marriage views of one of the owners, and the media picking up the story. A chance to spite liberals and the media and get a good lunch? What a bargain!*I know it’s not the actual flag of the Confederacy, but a battle flag.
