In 2008 I had the wild idea to sign up for the Seattle to Portland bike ride. I set my sights on the one-day version of the 2009 event, and began planning for it. Enough time has elapsed since the event that the memories of the pain have faded such that my recommendations to you may also serve as checklist for me. For a one-day ride, I recommend the following:Construct a training plan that allows you to safely build up your endurance. Unless you have a solid base, the key is to begin training early enough that you can slowly build up mileage and allow for some reduced mileage recovery weeks. I would say time in the saddle is more important than distance. I did not have much base mileage back then so I began my training plan on 01 February with a weekly mileage total of 50 miles. I held to the 10% rule and increased to a max weekly mileage of 300 miles three weeks prior to the event before tapering. My longest ride was scheduled to be 150 miles the week after the high-mileage week, but only ended up being 130 miles due to weather. I ended up riding 3,300 miles over those five months, which I found to be achievable and sufficient for a strong finish in Portland after a somewhat aggressive 200-mile ride south. If I were to participate in the Seattle to Portland event again, I would follow this same strategy.The double-century requires the rider to have nutrition dialed in. The event is very well supported, with plenty of opportunities for food and water along the way. A one-day hopeful has to know what nutrition they require and when/where they are going to get it. If you are going to rely solely on the provided replenishment sites, then be sure you are training with similar replenishment intervals. There is no shortage of food and water along the way.Train with a group and ride in a group. If you don't ride in a group now, be sure to get experience riding in a pack. A good (and also challenging) aspect of the STP ride is the diversity of skill you will see on the road. If you don't leave Seattle with a group you know, you will almost certainly be able to join a group along the way that is going your pace. It is a heck of a long way to ride on your own, so find a group and ask if you can join them. The downside, at least for the first 50 miles, is the sheer volume of riders of all skill levels.Familiarize yourself with the course. The course is well marked and well supported, so you won’t get lost, but I found it helpful to learn about the route, the topography, and the weather along the way. The course claims one hill, which tends to earn some hype as “The Hill,” but it is really nothing to speak of. I found the most challenging part of the ride was the final 50 miles, not because of the preceding 150 miles, but because it was dizzyingly boring. Make sure your bottle cages hold your bottles snugly; the expansion joints on the Lewis and Clark bridge crossing made for a bumpy ride!Get plenty of rest the week prior. I speak from experience! I quite literally had ONE hour of sleep the night of the event. Fortunately, I had banked enough ZZZs during the week leading up to the event that I was able to complete an aggressively paced ride with seemingly no loss of performance.If you care about time, avoid the mid-way meal provided by the event. Unless the event organizers have changed the format, there is a lunch at roughly the mid-way point for the one-day riders. The food could be great for all I know, but the line was horrendous. I was warned about the long line, so I planned to grab a sandwich at a nearby Subway. I felt it important to eat something besides my jersey-pocket snacks, but spending that much time in line would have surely resulted in sore muscles and likely some eroded motivation. In 2009 the lunch was chili, which gastronomically never made sense to me for a mid-way meal.Have a plan for your post-ride meal! This serves two purposes: 1) The plan becomes something to look forward to and think about while you are reducing the distance between you and the finish line. 2) You don't waste time pondering what to eat, while growing hungrier and crankier until you settle on a mediocre pizza joint with a terrible patron/wait ratio. Have a plan, make a reservation if necessary, and enjoy the meal you most certainly deserve. Don’t forget dessert; cake is always a good choice!Enjoy the ride. The ride is long, regardless if you elect the one-day ride or the more sensible two-day version. You will almost certainly encounter a tough stretch, but if you trained properly you CAN do it. Just remember, as my short list of anecdotal suggestions hopefully illustrate, as painful or as miserable you may feel at times, those memories will fade and you will be left with one heck of an accomplishment and plenty of great memories of your journey from Seattle to Portland.Best of luck to you!
