What are some effective ways to increase the traffic on a website as of 2019?The most effective ways to increase traffic to your website in 2019 really are a little different than people would think.Once you’ve read this answer from start to finish, you’ll have 5 Proven (and unexpected, especially #3) techniques to increase the traffic to your website in 2019.A Twist on SEOIt’s getting harder and harder to rank normally with SEO - and let’s be honest, it’s been a long time since that was easy.You can’t wait forever to get results, but everyone else is doing it, so you have to contribute to your site’s SEO somehow.Besides, with VEO (optimization for Voice Search) on the horizon, it’s time to catch up in your SEO.Let’s jump right in.Step 1: Shift your focus.Whether you are in one of the most competitive niches out there, or one of the least competitive, Shift your Focus.Typically in SEO, you look at popular keywords your customers would search that are related to your business/industry, product, or service.Let’s say your in the Essential Oil Space. What to do?Execute the Underdog SEO Strategy: Rank for more Difficult Keywords by Ranking for Long-Tail Keywords first.What are Long Tail Keywords?Courtesy of Hubspot:A long-tail keyword is a keyword phrase that contains at least three words (though some say two or more is considered long-tail). Long-tail keywords are used to target niche demographics rather than mass audiences.So Long Tail keywords are keywords related to the root keyword (essential oils), but are more specific and targeted.One of the tools in my SEO arsenal is Moz Pro, and one of my favorite uses is the Keyword Research.Lets start Broad and Non-Longtail:Moz gives us a Ranking Difficulty of 46/100. Believe it or not, Moz actually says that a Difficulty of 45 and above should be considered Unrankable, or very difficult to rank for.Now, I’m not interested in going into business selling essential oils, so I can’t tell you how hard it might actually be to rank organically.What I can tell you is that if you wanted to rank for the term “Essential Oils,” we’re currently pursuing this example with the best strategy for doing so.Let’s keep going!What I didn’t screenshot was Moz’s suggested alternative keywords:List of Essential OilsList of Essential Oils and their usesPrintable List of Essential Oils and their usesLet’s plug these in and see what our results are:Obviously search volume went down, because Longtail keywords are more specific. Fewer people are searching them because most searches are more broad. But for Moz’s tool, the closer we get to a 15 or lower (AKA “fairly easy to rank for”, the better.Let’s try another:Again, our monthly volume went down, but so did our Difficulty.If you’re worried about how low the monthly volume is getting, just imagine what it would be like if you got to the Top 3 search results for this term - or even the lauded 1st Position!Roughly 33.3% of searchers will click on the first result, so between 67 and 167 (33.3% of 201, and 500, respectively) people should click on your site.Over a year this could add up to as many as 2000 people from only one long-tail keyword.If you started off with no organic traffic, you could be on your way to rockstar-dom with just this strategy alone - and we’re only on #1.But wait, there’s one more to try in Moz:since it’s cut off - “printable list of essential oils and their uses”Now that’s a longtail, huh?Search volume went up, interestingly - and bonus, Difficulty dropped by another 10 points.What started out as a 46 Difficulty Keyword now has an entry-level 23 Difficulty Longtail keyword.If I were planning to rank for Essential Oils, this is likely one of the longtails I would start out with.The #1 search result for the query “printable list of essential oils and their uses” is currently found here: Top 150 List of Essential Oils With Free Cheat SheetI would probably Create a similar List and call it something likePrintable List of 201 Essential Oils and their UsesIf you care to check out their list, you’ll notice it’s in Alphabetical Order.I might try categorizing it by the things they’re supposed to treat.I’d even do more research and find out if it’d be worthwhile to add that feature to the title, like this:Printable List of 201 Essential Oils, Categorized by their UsesThis is called the Skyscraper Technique.Moz Pro costs money, but don’t worry, I’m not out to make an affiliate commission here.Here’s a tool that’s totally free that I sometimes use - from what I’ve seen it’s just as good.It’s called UbersuggestOne difference you may find is that Ubersuggest can give a radically different Ranking difficulty than Moz - initially I thought this was an inaccuracy, but I now believe Uber and Moz just use different scales - a 45 to Moz seems to be more like a 75 to Ubersuggest.How to Choose Your Longtail KeywordsUse another free tool, Google Search Console, to find out what Keywords your website already ranks for.What you really want are Long-Tail Keywords that are related to the keywords you’re ranking for. As I said though, if you aren’t ranking for anything yet, that’s okay too - you can still start by trying to rank for long-tails.Ranking for Long-tail keywords first makes it easier to rank for the difficult keywords you really want in the long term.2. Not just related sites, but preferably authoritative sites with high reputations.How can we do this? What if you’re a brand new site, just starting out?The short answer that you’re probably already sick of hearing is: Give massive value.High quality, in-depth videosAnimated Infographics - a new take on a classic strategy. The below video from the Museum of Natural History is definitely on the longer side, but the extent of your own animagraphic could be from 0:12 to 0:55, or even much shorter.A much simpler example:Offer Valuable Tools for free - especially if they usually cost moneyJust refer to a tool I recommended earlier - Neil Patel’s Ubersuggest.According to Neil, he “loses” $150,000 per month by offering Ubersuggest for free - but he says this isn’t a real loss, because he gains more traffic from Ubersuggest than any other source to his site right now.Why do all of these things “for free”?When you provide original and authoritative content on a topic -Especially if it’s a video (that probably took writing, camera equipment, a good microphone, practice, editing, etc.)or an animated infographic (that either invested your own time and skill in, or your investment in someone else who took the time and skill to create it)people notice. Everyone needs good content to post, and it’s hard to create it all yourself, which is why even big brands will repost other site’s content.You can even supercharge this process by sending your content to these other related sites and offer for them to use your content for free - meaning they don’t even have to stumble across it themselves and ask permission.Just make sure you get credit for it.5.
