If you are really not able to care for yourself at that point, then you have to contact regional services, and they will try to do something (minimal). They will first ask you to pay and they will ask that someone have “Guardianship” for the senior person. That allows them to then try to get the money from other people/sources I think and to avoid responsibility (ok that’s cynical but thats what I think). At the end of the day if you are in a nursing home, long term care is NOT covered by Medicare or by normal health insurance. You have to “spend down” all assets if you have any at all, and then get transitioned onto Medicaid. Medicaid is supposed to be for medical care for the “indigent” but is in fact paying for a very large number of seniors in nursing homes. If you are involved in this or approaching it, if they think the person gave you any money or assets they should not have, you will be charged with financial abuse of the senior unless you can show acceptable documentation, back 2–5 years before the event. I have been advised to call over 8 different organizations. The only statement people consistently make which I agree with is “it’s a process”. They say this because there is no answer, in the USA if you don’t fit neatly in a category, you will be on your own.Can I say that you can’t even get a real list of facilities, services, locations or costs without extensive calling and interviewing so if your potential service area is large it’s a huge job. There are websites/online resource willing to offer help for a fee but they are in fact limited in what they can do also, ’cause “who is going to pay” controls every aspect.
