How will Wuhan test 11 million people for Covid-19 in 10 days?

I am also surprised. It may seem like mission impossible but we never know if it can be done after it is finished (just like those 2 newly built hospitals)Personally I haven’t got any news from the community about how this would be carried out so I will not comment further. I will update as soon as this test begins.I can say that the 3rd grade students, as well as all the teachers in my middle school as well as my high school had all been tested before they got back to school, which was roughly a week ago. So I guess the ability to test people is there, whether there will be a massive test for everyone and how it would be carried out remains to be seen.Updating after one hour, 10PM, March13thI contacted the community worker who takes care of all people in my apartment building as well as 2 more. She is one of the many community workers who take care of our neighborhood. She said that this new 11 million test idea was put forward because that we had 7 new confirmed patients popping up out of no where yesterday.(‘Out of no where’ means that they had no clear contact with anyone) They were asymptomatic after they were tested positive and they showed syptoms after several days of self-quarantine.She is now giving out a form via Wechat to ask residents to fill out. We will submit our names, IDs, addresses, phone numbers, ages and whether we had a covid-19 test or not. According to her after this submission data is collected, there might be a free nucleic test for those who haven’t been tested. This is a new order from the government so more details are still being discussed.I believe that this new 11 million test is mainly aimed at old people as they are the most vulnerable. The reason I make this statement is that all working adults had been tested near 8th April when the lockdown ended and they returned to work. Everyone will need to be tested before they return to their jobs. The young also got tested when they returned to school. That leaves out the old among whom many are still living like it is hell out there. There are many elderly people in my community and they told me that they are still afraid to go out because they are afraid they would catch the virus. Many did refrain from going out of the community and have their supplies delivered to their doors via online orders. So I believe this is a new policy that will mainly benefit the old. I will update later as more details unveil. Stay tuned.Updating at 1AM,16th May.They started to test people yesterday. The communities that first finished collecting the data get to get tested first and mine was not a quick runner:)Honestly the details of how this test would be carried out were sent out on 13th May, I just did not see it from my community notices. I will translate several parts of these documents about the details.1, The nucleic acid test is free for this time.2, Residents who had a previous nucleic acid test more than a month ago will need to get retested.3, This test is for all that normally lives in the district.5, The test should be carried out in an open area. The doctors will come to the community to do the tests. (The first community that finishes collecting the data get to start the testing first)6, All that were registered should be tested in 8 days, no more than 10 days.8, Kids below 6 should do not do this test.If the test is taken outdoor, then it should be an open cool airy area. Temporary tents would be set along with tables, chairs with backrest and stools. When taking noon breaks the whole area need to be disinfected using bleach. If the test is taken indoor, then it should have a spilt type air conditioner and the room should be sealed and disinfected every 4 hours. Apart from the tables, chairs and stools, there should also be a register table at the door with chairs.Every community will need 3 workers to help with the test. For every 4–5 thousand residents there should be a team of 7 doctors to do the nucleic test. For each community there should be 2 police officers to help maintain order and guard security. All residents should take this test. Every person who is of the following 9 types will need to take the test.1, The confirmed cases, The asymptomatic positive ones, suspected cases as well as those who had close contact with them. Also all those who are having a fever.2, All School workers. teachers, support workers etc. (those whose jobs are related to the education system)3, Medical workers. (those whose jobs are related to medical system)4, Public transportation workers, including metro system workers, bus drivers ,taxi drivers who were appointed to communities during the ourbreak etc.5, Bank workers and supermarket workers.6, Volunteers and community workers who did their job during the outbreak.7, Civil Servants.8, Those who returned to Wuhan from foreign districts.9, Those who will leave Wuhan to work in other districts. So Wu Hao is correct as it did not mention the old people in this notice. And just like him I also believe that everyone would just end up getting tested.I received the notice from my community worker 5 hours ago in the wechat group. She told us that the test for all residents in my apartment building (4th in 6 buildings) would begin at 9 AM this sunday and last for about 40 mins. The 5th and 6th would then follow to take the test. The residents in the first 3 apartment buildings would be tested this saturday, today. She also said that for all residents we need to take our ID, a smartphone and a spare mask with us. We need to consume no water or food before 1 hour of the test. Those who were confirmed cases, suspected cases, close contacts and ones with fever would take the test another time to avoid a potential spread.I would be updating today (after a roughly 7 hours’ sleep?) when I go down to see how this test is commencing for the residents in the first 3 apartment buildings. I am curious just like everyone else by now.Updating at 11 PM May 16th.The temporary tents have been set on my community’s basketball playground this morning and the residents of the first 3 apartment buildings have been tested this afternoon. These are from my friend who took the test today. His community provides both nucleic test.My test is on tomorrow morning. I will need to take some rest now…Updating at 10 AM May 17th.I took the test 1 hour ago.Below were taken before I took the test as the medical workers put on their protective gears and community workers start setting fences. Several elderly people got up early in the morning and went down to queue to get tested earlier. The test starts at around 8:30 and the steps are as follows:1, Registration Area where IDs are checked into the system to see if it has been registered (I filled out the registration form online 3 days ago so my ID is in the system) and register those who haven’t.2, Material Distribution Area. You get a number according to the registration form and workers use that number to find the bar code that matches your name and put that bar code on the tubes. For example my ID is 1234567 and they will find my ID on the registration form where my test number is A44. I then tell the other 2 workers my number A44 and they will find the 2 bar codes that matches my name and number. They will then stick the bar codes on the 2 different tubes that will be later used for tests before they hand them to me. On the right are the workers who are looking for the matching bar codes as there are just too many of them. They said that it might be better if they had just moved the bar code printing machine here and to print on spot instead of finding the printed codes.3, Nucleic Test Area. A smaller one of the 2 tubes is for the nucleic test. I believe many have done this where they stick that into your throat to get the sample. It is really quick, few seconds and it is done. Nucleic test is a must-take for all residents in Wuhan unlike the antibody test. Only several districts of Wuhan City provide free antibody test and that includes Wuchang District where I am currently living in.This is the volunteer who tested me. He called out ‘handsome’ to me while I was approaching. We had a good chat. LOL. Damn he might be much more ‘handsome’ without those protective gears but he is definitely much more professional and protected in those suits.4, Antibody Test Area. Blood sample from the vein. The longer tube is for this where the doctors draw the blood into it. So it is not a ‘get the result right on the scene’ kind of test as they will get it tested later on, but it still gets the job done. They said that both results would be sent online when it came out. After I finished testing, I talked to some workers who are not that busy. They said that 10 days’ limit was for each individual districts and not for Wuhan city as a whole. They told me that they only tested about 300 people in my community yesterday afternoon and the original plan to finish the test this morning for the community as a whole is very likely to be extended to the whole day. So it IS a hard job to test all those people in such a short time but I do hope they get it done. More medical workers and more community workers will surely push this task further.Updating at 9 AM May 18th.The team of medical workers did stay in my community to test until about 6PM yesterday. But it was already pretty empty by 3 PM last afternoon as most people in my community had already been tested by then. They stayed for a few more hours because they would not be able to test another community as it is getting late.According to the notice, I will receive my test results in less than 48 hours and I can look it up online once it came out. It is said that about 4–5% people who had been tested have the antibody which is a little higher than expected. I have a strange feeling that I have the antibody…Pure guess though. But the test has not finished in my community. There are mainly 2 types of people who have not been tested. The old who had trouble walking, standing and waiting (especially in the sun); The ones who were confirmed cases or suspected cases. The community workers told me that they would arrange for another time to test these people door to door to better help these more vulnerable groups of people. I appreciate the effort they poured into caring these people as that is what caring means. There are also some people who did not register in time and cannot get the bar code to do the test. They will wait for further notice from the community. The medical team in my community yesterday will be moving to test another neighboring community today. That community is much bigger than mine and that means longer time would be taken and more teams would be sent. I am waiting to see the result from them.Updating at 14 PM May 19th.I got my antibody test result from the wechat platform of the hospital from which the team of medical workers who tested my community were selected. Both are negative. So it seems my instincts were wrong after all :) The nucleic test result has not yet come out but I suppose it will within 24 hours. I guess I will have to keep waiting. My aunt and uncle who is living in the same community with my family got both their test results. That includes the nucleic test results and their results are also negative. Many in my community have received both test results and I wonder why is my nucleic test results not coming out…10 AM May 21th.Still no nucleic results. I am getting a little anxious as many in my community have already received both their results. I am quite sure that they have tested my sample and I suspect that they made a mistake when uploading the results.Meanwhile many other communities are still undergoing tests and it would possibly go for a few more days than expected. We will wait for the official report until the end of this massive test. Also Robin Daverman has a perfect answer to why this test took place. It is mostly about boosting confidence. 50 days have passed and Wuhan is still slowly recovering, much slower than other parts of the country. People are afraid to come here and there are incidents where locals are discriminated against in other provinces despite their health code shows they are healthy. Most restaurants still have much much less customers than ususal and businesses are suffering. I talked to a restaurant owner and he told me that he expect this to continue to maybe September when college students came back to study in Wuhan (Wuhan has a lot of universities).Despite reopened, Wuhan is still not fully back to normal and we need some confidence in the people, and in the city, to help it recover. A massive test will surely do the job.Robin Daverman's answer to Do you think China will really test all 11 million Wuhan residents for Coronavirus (Covid-19)?Updating at 11PM May 23th.I did not update for 2 days because I was preparing for my exam and it was exhausting…I received my nucleic test result yesterday and it was negative. According the officials the nucleic test results will be then linked to the health QR code which works like a pass. The QR code is what everyone needs to get access to places. Green code give you access to almost everywhere while the yellow and red ones limit your access. This screenshot below contains several personal information and so I blurred some of them. On the top there is my name and ID number. In the middle there is the green health code which says I am healthy (at least covid free). On the bottom there is the nucleic test result. You may notice that there are 2 closed eyes with the shape of eyelashes on the right side of the screen. Once tapped, those 2 eyes will open and reveal the true information next to them instead of the dots just in case that you may not want it to be noticed.Meanwhile more of my friends are getting tested in other districts of the city. You may notice that the community where my friend lives even provides stools for everyone in the line which is more considerate compared to mine:( Residents in my community had to bring their own chairs when waiting:(My community worker told us 2 hour ago that the people who hadn’t registered during my community’s test will need to go to another nearby community to get tested. That is about 800m and some complain that there are quite some old people and they may have trouble getting there. The community worker responds that there will be community volunteers who will be there to help them. There are questions as to this 10 day limit and I explained that according to medical workers in my community this limit is for each individual districts, not the city as a whole. But I suspect they will get it done within 10days anyway. I will be going to that nearby big community next monday to see how their tests are doing. Maybe it will all be finished by then.Updating at 11AM May 25th.My community notifies us this morning in the wechat group that today is the last day of this city wide free test and those who miss this chance will need to get tested on their own if they need test results to go to work or visit other places. The goverment also texted everyone saying that whoever missed the test will be given another chance to register before 17 PM, May 26th, tomorrow in order to get tested free of charge. So it seems they did manage to pull off this massive test in 10 days as every communities did provide a free test opportunity for every residents. At least this is the situation in my community. I am satisfied with what they provide and it has shown positive results. My teacher said that the one major benefit of this massive test is that as there are very few people who have been tested positive, people are confident to go out more and to have fun. She and her family went out to a farm to pick up strawberries yesterday which is a clear sign that confidence is back. I am looking forward to seeing tourism back in summer and I wish that is not just a fantasy :)

What are all the steps involved in getting a carton of milk from the cow to your fridge?

I work for Tetra Pak. I design dairy and beverage plants for a living. These are the basic steps, if we are talking about fresh milk.(For recombined milk (milk powder) the process is a whole lot different.)1. Of course, milking the cows both automated or manual. In the west and big dairies, it's usually the former. Sucking cups are put on the udders of the cows, and a hose connected to the cups which takes the milk to tanks for intermediate storage. These dairies are highly organised. The herds get into queues at the time of milking, walk through pathways and stand in their milking stations. The milking process has to be a relaxing and soothing experience for the cows. its sometimes accompanied with some lounge music.Cross-bred and well fed cows can produce up to 60 litres of milk in a day.If these cows are not milked at the right times, it can actually kill them.2. The milk is thermized at around 60-65 degrees C to quickly take out the most harmful microorganisms. It's heated only when the transportation takes a long time. Then it's cooled down to 5, and filled in road tankers which would take it to the dairy plant.3. At the dairy plant, the milk is first received using a hose and then cooled down again just to be sure, filtered through a mesh and then stored in huge silos which can go up to 500k litres in size. Even bigger in New Zealand. That's nothing in oil and gas, but pretty big for us in the dairy business. And now we have the milk traveling at velocities like 1.5 m/s through stainless steel pipes, being pumped from one tank to another. Hundreds of valves and sensors on its way. Flow being diverted around. Again, possible both with automation and manually. The level of automation that can be achieved is quite amazing. The bar code below your own milk carton can tell you which road tanker it belonged to and subsequently, which few cows gave this milk. We call it traceability.4. We can mix chocolate, strawberry, sugar, milk solids etc in the milk, whatever that sells. So many different ways of doing that. Can be one different answer.5. Now we pasteurise the milk based on the idea of a certain French guy. He said there are two things needed to kill off harmful stuff, temperature and time. Pasteurisation means heating at 70 degrees C for fifteen seconds or so. This varies in the US, based on their health regulations. Heating is done in plate heat exchangers, where the media is hot water. These machines called pasteurisers also have a separator to take out the cream as much you like. You get skimmed milk when we take out all of the cream. And then this cream and milk are separately sold as special products with special benefits for their consumers. Win-win situation for the seller. After standardising the fat content, we homogenise the milk. This is to break down the fat globules so they never get back together. We do that by forcing the milk through a very tiny gap at high pressure like 150-250 bar. That is why you never see a cream layer forming in the package or your glass of milk.Although in unprocessed milk which we have in the countryside, it's quite common. Oh how I love to eat that thick creamy layer off the milk, when back in India. You might find it gross.Cows milk has 4 percent fat while the buffalo milk which we mostly drink in North India has around 8 percent.6. If we're selling fresh milk, we directly go to the filling machines after this step. fill it in plastic bottles which need to consumed within 3-4 days and have to be stored in a cool and dry place. So the transport has to be refrigerated as well. And so it ends up in your fridge.ORIf the carton in your fridge(if open) or outside is made up of six layers of cardboard, aluminium and plastic(patented by Tetra Pak until recently), which are aseptic(no contact with the outside world), then we are talking about a special kind of milk called UHT milk.7. After pasteurisation, we have to heat the milk again - at ultra high temperatures. Here you heat at about 140 degrees C for 4 seconds and quickly cool down to ambient. The idea is to kill all the bugs, even the ones that go into a dormant stage at pasteurisation temperatures. Even the ones that are sleeping or doing nothing, practically everything. It's called Aseptic technology. Not so popular in the US.8. After this, you have to make sure that the milk has no contact with the environment, which we do by using steam barriers. These are small walls of steam between a milk pipe and the outside. This is a very energy consuming and complicated process.9. Then we fill this milk in cartons using aseptic filling machines. The aseptic filling machines shape the paper into a tetrahedron/brick, fill it with milk, seal it using heat and all this without letting any microorganisms get into the pack. Pretty cool. These filling machines are fed with rolls of paper with colourful animals and brand names. This paper and the filling machine, are both supplied by us i.e. Tetra Pak. We manufacture and print the special paper with six different material layers, at our factories.10. After filling the carton with milk, we have a conveyor belt on which the cartons of different sizes from 200ml to 2 L all line up in a queue and keep passing through different stations. First to get a date and time stamp, then to get a straw or a cap attached on them, then to get stacked into bigger hardboard boxes, then into pallets, then to fork lifts and all the way to the truck. Now you can store these cartons anywhere you like, and if sealed, drink the milk anytime in the next two years or so. Usually the shelf life is said to be 6 months by the producer. The transportation is easy and inexpensive too. No need to refrigerate.Ruben Rausing the founder of Tetra Pak, came up with the idea of storing milk in paper cartons in the 1950s and revolutionised the dairy industry forever. Before him, milk was stored in glass bottles which were reused after consumption. Difficult to transport due to their fragility and shape, unhygienic to re-use and costing a lot to manufacture. The Swede believed that the package should save more than it costs. And he was mighty successful at it. Cartons are inexpensive, safe and easy to transport. Stackable, not so fragile, light weight, ergonomic designs and so on.The first shape was the Tetrapak classic - the tetrahedron - the one on the extreme left. Hence the name of our company.Other shapes and sizes followed as technology progressed. In India, any kind or brand(yes, we have competition) of carton is called a Tetra Pak.
