As an ardent movie fan who grew up in the 90’s and enjoyed Mohanlal , Mammootty, Suresh gopi & Jayaram ruling they box office and some one who used to be proud of the fact that Malayalam movies are far more realistic than others films , the has been some disappointments.Thandavam : Typical Mohanlal film post Narasimham trying to take advantage of his larger than life image.Mohanlal & Nedumudi Venu are brothers with the latter always preferring natural foods and opposes western culture and cuisine . He encourages fruit drinks over colas , and even invents natural engine oil that can propel cars called mithilapuri engine oil ( WTF !! ).Nedumudis character is named Swaminathan but ideal name for him should have been ‘Ramar Pillai’. Mohanlal of course is the same all - rounder gentleman whom ladies ( married or single ) lust after him . He has 2 of them stalking and romancing him in the film . One is a married buxom babe and the other one is nearly 20 yrs younger to him and keeps sending him lovey dovey voice messages cringeworthy to say the least.Enough sexual inenduos that look vulgar and the regular fare - baddies target his brother as they want to start cola factory and Mohanlal has his revenge by the end .Through out the film he has a punch dialogue - entha strong alle ??!!Praja : This high voltage disaster has Mohanlal playing a golden hearted don named Zakir Hussain. He was a don in Mumbai returned to Kerala so he rides around in a black and yellow taxi that’s normally found in Mumbai and has an assistant whom he calls Malayalees. And yea he is patriotic to such an extent that anyone he meets has to endure a 10 minute dialogue about the greatness of India.Aiswarya who plays a cop initially has some friction with him but falls in love with him during the course of the film.The Prince : Director Suresh Krishna’s intentions of making a blockbuster Akin Baasha in Malayalam may have been genuine but alas the end result was something different . Mohanlal , Prema , Girish karnad , ‘Nizhagal Ravi & Prakash Raj sounds like a stellar cast as superstars from all languages of the south.But the movie was bubbling with all of them over-acting specially Prakash Raj with his dangerous buffoon act who hammed the most.Prema was also ‘ unsahikable ‘ as the innocent belle who gets shocked every time she learns about Mohanlal’s underworld activities.Girish Karnad as Mohanlals father who is devoid of any emotion , he even plans to kill his pregnant daughter - in - law so that Mohanlal has no distractions continuing his underworld activities !The King & Commissioner : Both ‘ The king ‘ & ‘ The Commissioner have been individually successful movies in the 90’s . However clubbing the two titles and regenerating the same characters for a movie based in 2013 with 90’s formula is where it faltered badly . The camera work was shoddy and the characters all spoke as if they were on cocaine the whole time .The same style was used in earlier films but they wer backed up by a strong plotline.Even simple dialogues were delivered in a hyper energetic manner irritating the viewer.Saikumar as a wicked saint is wasted as he has nothing much to do.The overdose was felt by the ppl watching this torture .One of the worst films made in Malayalam.Musafir : Chances are you haven’t heard this film starring 80’s heartthrob Rahman and Mamta Mohandas but I don’t blame you .This atrocious attempt in film making was touted to be a high budget thriller shot in locations like Cyprus and Bangkok where Malayalam films have never been shot before . Unfortunately it ended up looking like a mega serial seen on Asianet or Surya. (Producers most probably ran out of money or pulled the plug mid-way) .With a senseless story devoid of any logic this film it seemed most of the film is shot in Dubai where suvs and off-roaders were chasing each other with frenzy. After going through the torture of this film if you don’t feel like you wasted time you can come and talk to me about itKalachakram : This is perhaps the only attempt in science fiction ever tried in Malayalam . The movie is about Hitler living in Kerala as a guy named agnivesh. (No spoof - it’s a serious attempt).Before Hitler commits suicide in 1940’s he hands over a little child of all the ppl to his indian malayalee friend - Nanaji ( Devan ) .(Proud moment for Malayalees)That child is Hitlers clone and he is brought up in Kerala .Nanaji and indian Hitler both are immortal .. how ? One may ask . Nanaji’s technique is live transplant of RH blood from unsuspecting ppl and Indian Hitler sheds his skin 4–5 times a year to stay young .one will think how does his internal organs also shed skin 4–5 times a year ? Mallu Hitler’s company is worlds biggest company .. bigger than Reliance , Microsoft but their meetings are held in a small sit-out of a malayalee house that normally neighborhood Aunties keep gossiping.By this point in the film you have stopped worrying about logic Or sense.Needless to say this mallu Hitler has plans to rule over the world .He has a girlfriend who dances while he plays the piano.There is a lady assassin sent by Mossad to kill agnivesh Via honey trap. Assassin to Hitler (Ninde jewish jocks (jokes) enne kuliru korunnu.Rest of the film has funny visualizations shown as high level hacking .. a missile being diffused via digital calculator in the climax and a virus named Marilyn and antivirus named Monroe.Jagadeesh sitting in Kerala hacks even wallstreet n NASA …..Lanka : This sleazefest directed by AK Sajan was a bold attempt in film making by same director who made ‘ Stop Violence ‘ ( A criminally underrated film ) . Suresh Gopi is an ex captain who was a part of IPKF that was formed to fight LTTE in Sri Lanka . His mission’s over but he stays back buying 7 nice palatial bungalows and womanizing with gusto while leading an aimless life . Enter the sultry Gypsy girl Mamta whom he seduces and marries but she has an agenda of her own .The plots quite interesting but the execution is really bad. What’s supposed to be sexy ends up looking crass and vulgar.I don’t know who was suresh gopi’s costume designer but in the attempt to make suresh gopi appear a macho playboy he ends up looking like a play-ammaman with his hairy chest And knickers similar to gelf mallu uncles you see in Veegaland.The DOP is a letdown as Sri Lanka is quite beautiful and it could have contributed to the movies tone and mood as well but Director seemed more interested in highlighting Mamta’s curves and sultry presence . One of the worst films by Suresh Gopi .Before I conclude I need to make an honorary mention to a Master piece called ‘war & love ‘- 2003. This film is most probably Vinayan’s answer to war films like ‘ Border ‘ or ‘ Saving Private Ryan’. The movie has an ensemble cast of actors like Siddique , Jagadeesh, Dileep , Kalabhavan Mani and Tamil actor Prabhu.Prabhu heads a regiment of soldiers with the mentioned actors . All in this comedy regiment are malayalees mostly cracking jokes and chali comedies on each other .All are captured by Pakistani general Mukesh Rishi who takes orders from Bin Laden himself.They are taken to a camp where they r living as POWs.The cook in the camp happens to be a malayalee who migrated to Pakistan during partition.The terrorist leaders daughter visits the camp and love blossoms between Dileep and her. The good part is the Indian Army most probably doesn’t know about the existence of this film else they may get depressed after seeing Army shown in such poor light .The fight scenes r horrible and laughable . And the entire film is an ugly mess.You can certainly gift this DVD to anybody you hate , anyone whom you don’t want to see again or to your GF while breaking up so that you can ensure you won’t see them ever again .
