PDF Editor FAQ

Memorizing compound structures and their names is too hard. I understood that the chemistry world is like a jungle, it’s hard to recognize every structure and name? What can I do?

We all had to do it. If you want to be part of our chemistry fraternity so do you.On a more practical, non-dickhead sounding note (though I bet that note resonates), we use these terms to communicate in our profession. Whether discussing the steps in a synthesis or a specific compound, there will be a large, but relatively simple base of terms we need to be able to apply. As you get further, the reactions get more specialized and specific but most follow along the lines of a very small set of basic reactions. Memorize those. Then, once you've got those, move onto how specific reagents behave. Naming compounds follow, again, a pretty small set of basic guidelines. You can do it if you put the time in.I'm assuming you're taking orgo chem? I tell everyone this: it's not terribly difficult. IF YOU PUT THE TIME IN. It's not a subject where brute intellect can cram half a semester overnight. It's a lot of information, but it's not difficult information if you keep up. Thirty to sixty minutes of review and problem solving every week day will be plenty. It's not rocket science, THAT is tough. I promise if you put the time in, you'll get a good 5-6hrs sleep the night before an exam and ace it.

Are there any teachers/educators who have outsourced their prep work and marking?

I don't know how a good teacher could outsource prep work and/or marking. Each year I develop a curriculum for each of my classes (I have taught and still teach a range of math and science classes: regular, honors, and AP Chemistry, conceptual, honors, and AP Physics, and Algebra). My curriculum for each course fits the national standards against which each class is defined and measured, but the specific details of each year's curriculum for the individual courses vary according to the students in my classes. For example, when I teach AP Chemistry, the start of the year includes a review of some of the first year chemistry material. I need to decide how much time to spend on naming compounds, writing equations, stoichiometry, and fundamental atomic structure, based on what my students learned and how much they remember from two years ago. This year I am moving more quickly than last year. Why? Because I have different students, all of whom had a different teacher than the ones I taught last year, so that their present understanding of some of the basic ideas can be reviewed quickly and we can move on. An outsourced curriculum can't take into consideration the nature of the students. In addition, I need to make my curriculum flexible so that when important current events that pertain to science/chemistry/physics occur, I can include them appropriately into my curriculum. Last year, after the earthquake in Japan, there was a lot of conversation and media coverage of the potential for a nuclear disaster. I had planned in my curriculum (for both (regular) Chemistry and AP Chemistry) to teach nuclear chemistry at the end of the semester. However, the timing was wrong, given the nature of the events in Japan. So I changed my schedule. I am not sure that an outsourced curriculum could do that.A few years ago I did try some outsourcing for my AP Chemistry class: I bought a CD with a series of "lectures"--power point slides--that cover the basic ideas of each unit; it also provides labs and tests. The lectures are very basic--really just outlines--that require me to fill in with a lot of material. My students would not otherwise learn enough. The tests are mediocre--I use them as guidelines and write my own questions based on old AP exams. The labs are fine. I use some. I am not impressed with this outsourcing. But here again, I need to use my own judgement about how to amend this curriculum and the materials. In regard to marking, I don't want anyone else to grade my students. I know how I taught them, I know what I taught them, and I know how they write, solve problems, think, and express themselves. It would be unfair to my students to expect someone else to determine if they answered a question correctly, if they should get partial credit for a response, or if they should get no credit if they did not show their work. Some students write more clearly than others, and trying to determine whether a written answer is correct is not always easy. [Obviously, the AP class is a little different, in that my students will take the AP exam and unknown graders will mark these exams. However, to prepare the students I give AP style questions in their tests and grade them according to AP guidelines.]I would not want an outsider writing my curriculum nor grading my students.

Which are the basic concepts to learn chemistry properly?

Homework Helpers: Chemistry is a user-friendly review book that will make every student--or parent trying to help their child feel like he or she has a private Chemistry tutor. Concepts are explained in clear, easy-to-understand language, and problems are worked out with step-by-step methods that are easy to follow. Each lesson comes with numerous review questions and answer keynotes that explain each correct answer and why it's correct. This book covers all of the topics in a typical one-year Chemistry curriculum, including:A systematic approach to problem solving, conversions, and the use of units.Naming compounds, writing formulas, and balancing chemical equations.Gas laws, chemical kinetics, acids and bases, electrochemistry, and more. While Homework Helpers: Chemistryis an excellent review for any standardized Chemistry test, including the SAT-II, its real value is in providing support and guidance during the year's entire course of study.Homework Helpers: Chemistry 2nd Edition

Trial worked well. Perfect quality about half the file size. Paid version won't make it all the way threw a movie. By the end of conversion it slows to a crawl. After waiting about 1.5 hours for the last 3mins of conversion the audio does not line up to video at end of movie. The DVD was fine. Hand Brake worked fine but tripled file size and CocoDoc cut it in half. Would have been 5 stars if not for this issue.
