Years ago, my wife and I were boarding a flight from SLC to Seattle, and had just taken our seats in coach, when a woman carrying a small dog in her arms sat directly behind my wife. I had heard this woman back in the air terminal saying that she was taking the dog with her just for the fun of it—not as a service or companion dog, or for any important medical reason. (I didn’t know that folks could fly with a pet not specially authorized as a guide/companion/service animal on a commercial flight. Can one simply buy a “pet” ticket?)Anyway, I had been a bit concerned that this little dog might get restless during our 1–1/2 hour flight and start barking or raising a commotion. What heightened my concern were the two very large, brawny men who boarded after us, neither of whom was smiling when they glanced at this woman and her dog before taking their seats directly behind her.I’d been sort of holding my breath until after we were airborne and at cruising altitude, and was just starting to breathe calmly because the dog had been very still to that point. In fact, all was quiet and peaceful when suddenly, about 30 minutes out of Seattle, our furry passenger started yapping—and yapping, and yapping.
