PDF Editor FAQ

Will Hawaii secede from the United States due to that telescope issue?

No chance of that. There is a moderately sized “sovereignty” movement, which a group of, mostly, Hawaiian people want the return of the reign of the Hawaiian Kingdom. The Hawaiian Kingdom that was relinquished when the last Queen, Lilioukalani abjugated the throne in 1861. The tensions of that time were seen by some, not all, as an “illegal overthrow” of the kingdom by the United States, under President McKinley. Later on, President Clinton signed off on the “illegality” of it, with an official White House apology to the Hawaiian people.Development of various kinds of buildings in Hawaii are plagued with mega-out-of-State monies and questionable political ethics by State officials, all the time. When a “big money” project, like the Thirty Meter Telescope, begins, the Sovereignty Movement rises up with a “sacredness of the land” approach. They played fairly decent, within the scope of protest, with the TMT development. Except the developers went through a 10 year approval process with the State courts, in addressing the protests against.Anti-TMT protestors actually become illegal when blocking the construction road [which was done with our H-3 freeway construction, also]. They also erected a cabin house, on site, [it is pretty cold up there], which became a rather sticky hypocritical item, coming from an angle of anti-construction on sacred land. It got torn down; more arrests are happening, and the telescope will go on - expensively delayed; unless the company of astrologers up and leaves.Similar protests happened with an inter-island ferry. It was a type of huge vessel that hydroplaned above the surface at a certain speed. It was meant to compliment inter-island commuting. The protesters arrived and blocked all the ports of landing; on Kauai and Maui. They did this for a length of time, until the corporation folded under the cost of the delays. That is the tactic. So, either way, telescope, or no; the State of Hawaii will not cede from the Union. Too much money involved for that. Major Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, Army military presence here. A lot of people depend on State somewhat doing there job. The majority of Hawaiians, or Hawaiian descent, are NOT Sovereignty Movement; but are active in preserving the culture of that. Hawaii is too dependent on shipping for all the food, oil, and water. Those are some main reasons that Hawaii will remain U.S.; and not plop a crown on a random radical and play, ‘all hail the King, do what he says.’Mostly Sovereignty followers want the land back, or rent from the US Navy for Pearl Harbor, or something ‘out there’ in expectation. They’ll not recognize State laws, because in their eyes the State is “not legit,” and has no ”sovereignty” over them. This is an open door for a lot of those, who find it appealing to not obey law at all. They will block construction. They will drive around in a line of pickup trucks with the inverted “distress sign” Hawaiian flag [of the original Kingdom] and the inverted State of Hawaii flag.It may sound idyllic to some, like the ‘return of Camelot’ or something. Yet, a kingdom, in Hawaii, is just not realistic, nor sustainable. Not only that, it would be a major slight to expect, 95% of the population to become “subjects” to a crown. Most self-proclaimed “king of Hawaii” folk, were a kind of Ruby Ridge fringe, with a felonious background. Many people love the Hawaiian history, culture and heritage and wish to sincerely preserve the language and the lifestyle of “aloha.” Friends and family will meld with this and there is an underlying loving aloha spirit, under neath the Honolulu traffic congestion.Social Media and Hollywood actors find it a wonderful photo-op to support the “real culture” in defense of there land, but realize it is a fringe group of protesters on the same agenda. My feeling is that they attack the billion dollar projects, delaying them at great cost, with the endgame of getting a lot of money in a settlement. Hush money, big time; akin to ambulance-chasing lawyers. Probably unpopular to say that here.

Assuming infinite fuel and ammo: A US. Navy destroyer travels back in time and approaches the port of Rome in 117 AD. The ship has the US flag and the crew only speaks English. What happens next?

I’m going to take “infinite” as meaning “endless”, i.e. the ship isn’t hauling around singularities but rather the fuel tanks and ammunition holds are always full no matter how much they take out.Since no specific date was given, I’m going with them arriving in mid-March, with the Mediterranean sailing season ahead of them. So—For beginning perspective, here’s a map (for larger version):What’s really interesting here is that there was no emperor in Rome in 117: Trajan died on his way back from campaigning in the east, and Hadrian was proclaimed emperor without being required to return to Rome. So Rome was pretty much in the hands of the Senate, which was dominated by a Spanish faction which backed Trajan (who was from Spain) and among its supporters outside the Senate included Hadrian. Now I’m going to beg to differ with the question; the odds of a U.S. navy destroyer not having people who speak something besides English are extremely small; if nothing else there will be some Hispanic crew members. Not that this is terribly important, as Rome had people good at learning ‘barbarian’ tongues.Since the question doesn’t specify which kind of destroyer, I’m going to agree with Craig Murray and go with one of these:So this vessel (that’s the USS Preston, BTW) sails up to Ostia, Rome’s port, and drops anchor. The captain — probably a commander — will probably wait for the city to react, and meanwhile try to determine just where they are. For reference, here’s what Ostia looked like:Here’s an artist’s rendition of the inner harbor, built by emperor Trajan:Notice it has a canal and river bordering it; this was a military installation — after all, this is Rome’s premier naval port. The Roman commander, a legate, would send out a tribune (a more junior officer) in a galley, looking rather like this:The tribune would be cautious; from the appearance of this floating fortress, it would be assumed (and feared) this was a visitation from a god. The moment the Preston’s commander (since I’ve drawn the Preston as the destroyer, I may as well keep her wartime captain, G.S. Patrick) saw that ship coming out, he’d realize that his problem wasn’t just where they were, but possibly when they were — a speculation that would be strengthened when the tribune, in classic Roman armor hailed them in Latin! For convenience, I’ll give our tribune a Roman name: Gaius Marcus Lupinus. Tribune Lupinus hails this floating fortress in Latin, and is shocked when the response is in no tongue he recognizes. This would be troubling because gods would be expected to speak whatever language humans used at a given place; since neither Patrick nor any of his officers respond in Latin to a hail given in Latin, then obviously they’re not local gods, or at any rate not messengers of any local gods — and “local” here means pretty much the entire empire. Though the empire’s pantheon includes a number of eastern gods by this time, perhaps those on the floating fortress speak Greek? So Tribune Lupinus, being an educated sort to hold the position he does, tries again in Greek, with the same result. Recognizing he’s out of his depth, Lupinus reacts in the time-honored fashion of officers, and passes the situation back to his superior — and since I’ve had no luck discovering who actually commanded the port of Ostia in 117, I’ll give our local legate a name for convenience: Felix Ocella Galeo (whose initials describe his understanding of the situation).Legate Galeo, being an effective administrator in order to be in command of Ostia, knows exactly what to do: he sends for the praeceptor who tutors his children, and asks him (I’ll call this teacher Magister Crispus) to gather several other scholars who would be good at learning a new language — and to expedite this, supplies a squad of soldiers with an optio in command.Within an hour, Tribune Lupinus is back on his galley, this time with Magister Crispus and several colleagues, and they set off to the floating fortress to tackle this new language. It doesn’t take them long to realize that this new language shares some of their Latin words, but also has some similarities to the language of the tribes in Germania Superior. By the end of the day they have learned all the newcomers’ words for everything Tribune Lupinus and the galley’s crew wear, along with all the parts of the galley, plus a good number of verbs including those for eating, rowing, swimming, climbing, hearing, and speaking. The Tribune and Preston’s captain agree to continue the language lessons the next morning. That night, the brilliant lights on the floating fortress, which the Romans now understand is a ship, amaze Legate Galeo, Tribune Lupinus, and the praeceptors, accenting their concern that this may be a visitation by at least messengers of some unknown gods. After a week of effort, enough of the ship’s officers have become competent in Latin, and Magister Crispus and colleagues competent enough in English, that substantive discussions can begin. Captain Patrick carefully explains that the Preston was magically transported from their homeland to just west of Italy, and since none have any idea of how to go back, they are in need of a new home — and are willing to lend their power to some joint ventures. Legate Galeo consents to bringing food for the crew, but passes the question of an alliance with them on to the Senate in Rome, since Trajan was still in the east, on his way home from Parthia after being wounded in battle. When four senators arrive from Rome, they and Legate Galeo and Tribune Lupinus get a tour of the ship’s spaces, excluding engine and gunnery, and are impressed enough with a vessel of steel that their navy could only mar the paint on. Satisfied that these newcomers are not servants of any hostile gods — though astounded that many of them seemed to be Christians! — the senators agree to try some joint ventures and designate Legate Galeo to handle the matter. At that point Captain Patrick takes the opportunity to “foretell” an eclipse of the moon on April fourth, a prediction that comes true just a few days later.Knowing from history that trouble had been brewing in Britain while emperor Trajan was off in the east, Captain Patrick suggests a voyage to the Isle of Man, known to the Romans as Insula Manavia, to show what the Preston can do, using the future site of the town of Douglas for a base and anchorage (with the Ship’s Boat and the Captain’s Gig for getting to shore), then demonstrating the destroyer’s firepower against a coastal fort of one of the troublesome tribes of Scotland, known to the Romans as Caledonia. During the voyage the ship’s officers (all three of them) spend time training with their swords.Fast forward: Tribune Lupinus is impressed by U.S.S. Preston, especially her speed, which is seven or eight times as fast as the best Roman ship. Captain Patrick offers to show him a new land, so on the way back to Ostia they stop at the Madeira Islands, almost due west of Gibraltar. The islands are uninhabited, so the tribune claims them for Rome and offers them to Captain Patrick, generously adding any other islands in the area that the crew of the Preston knows of. Captain Patrick also gives Tribune Lipinus a small sealed scroll with the date September 15 on it as the date to open it. On return to Ostia, Captain Patrick gives the crew shore leave in shifts. A request is made to Legate Galeo for permission to recruit settlers for their island home, from among the poor. When that is granted, the Preston spends the rest of May through June hauling settlers, primarily farmers, to the main island, along with what supplies they can persuade Legate Galeo to provide. Meanwhile a chief petty officer realizes that since their ammunition supply doesn’t decrease, they can open the shells and extract the explosive compound and use the emptied shells as a source of steel better than the Romans had; the machine shop is given the job of using shell parts to make explosives that the Romans could throw with catapults. edit: somewhat later it dawns on the petty officer in charge of the engine room that since the fuel level isn’t going down, they can drain fuel and use it for their own settlements plus provide some for the emperor and Senate.Fast forward: After Hadrian takes the throne, and Captain Patrick’s sealed message, once opened, shows that he knew when and where Trajan would die and that Hadrian would succeed him, the emperor himself becomes interested. Patrick presents him with two new items for the legions: exploding cast-iron spheres for catapults, and fire-rockets (using black powder). With these and the support of the Preston, Hadrian makes a deal with the tribe called the Caledonii: with Roman support they conquer Scotland/Caledonia, establishing a client kingdom under the empire, and then Ireland, with a high king selected by the five great tribes and approved by Rome; the Isle of Man becomes a Roman naval base, while in Londinium the Prescott’s crew partners with locals, both Roman and native, to establish a shipyard for building much-improved sailing ships. The Madeira Islands, the Canaries, and the Azores become the Province of Prescott, with settlers recruited from across the empire. The Prescott’s crew also teaches improved sanitation, including composting of human waste instead of spreading it raw on the fields, and the use of cats in the cities to keep rodents under control; emphasis is also given to public health measures since the officers know there’s a plague coming. edit: Realizing that using shell casings for steel is a limited process, crew members teach the Romans the use of coal to make coke, the coke to fuel blast furnaces; they also explain the importance of consistent carbon content for good steel.Fast forward: learning from Captain Patrick, Hadrian reforms the Praetorian Guard, making it an elite professional force sworn to protect the Senate and emperor but not to interfere in their business, including especially the selection of new emperors. He also reforms the legions, instituting rotation of personnel so loyalties to their generals is reduced; an academy for officer training is established at Barcelona, and a new legion, formed from the peoples of the border provinces (especially the British Isles), is established, the XXXI, as a training and demonstration legion for new weapons. The XXXI, supported by two other legions, pushes the border east to the Oder and conquers Denmark, making it another client kingdom. In the east, the border with Parthia is settled, making Armenia a jointly-administered kingdom with Parthian access to the Black Sea, while Rome extends its control deeper into Arabia and around the Black Sea; in the west, the border in Africa is pushed west to cover all of modern Morocco. The Senate and Hadrian are persuaded to grant all religions in the empire licit status, with a irreversible decree that no religion would be the official one of the empire. A law is passed that emperors must be chosen from the Senate, by merit, and the throne cannot be inherited. The civil service is reformed, a system based on merit established, with an academy in Carthage; all administrators are required to be fluent in both Latin and Greek. Use of explosives enables the expansion and improvement of the imperial road system. Wood-cut printing is introduced, as is the use of letters of credit, the latter revolutionizing trade within the empire; edit: (with thanks to Dean Croshere) the ship’s operations officer introduces double entry bookkeeping, transforming imperial finances and business. In Hadrian’s last year, the empire is flourishing, and as a final campaign the XXXI “Illustris” with the support of the Prescott conquers the entire coast of the Red Sea.To celebrate the ascension of Emperor Antoninus to the throne, Captain Patrick, now retired from captain to govern Prescott Province, introduces the printing press with moveable type, while the U.S.S. Prescott plants a Roman colony in the Bahamas. And the rest is history…. ;)
