PDF Editor FAQ
Why don't Lyft and Uber require drivers accepting airport rides to have empty trunks, or at least room for a couple of bags?
Well, let me put it this way. If you spent hours and hours a day in your car, would you want to ride around with nothing at all with you? No safety equipment, water, anything? While I don’t have a full trunk, I do have to keep cleaning supplies, water to drink, and even a full size spare as they don’t even put donut spares in modern cars and there is no room for a full size spare in the small hole where they now put a “tire repair kit” which is just fix a flat, in essence. There is also some basic safety gear such as jumper cables, flares, etc. which I managed to fit in the small hole where the tire repair kit is.When I first got my car, I had a flat and had to have my car towed as I had no donut spare and the sidewall was damaged. Most total blowouts wouldn’t be fixed by that tire repair kit and, if you do use it, it makes replacing the tire a pain later on.So now I have some basic supplies, cleaning supplies, safety gear, a jacket, and a spare tire in my trunk. It takes up some space in my trunk but there is still room for some luggage. But, bear in mind, I am an Uber X. If you have a lot of luggage and people, you are much better off with Uber XL. I once had a pax get mad because I couldn’t fit four people and four large bags in my car. Having a totally empty trunk would not have made that particular bit of magic happen.
From a legal, cost, and expertise point of view, are there significant advantages to having your car serviced and repaired at the dealer vs. a local repair shop/Jiffy Lube?
Dealer versus independent maintenance is one of the most hotly debated topics in car ownership, right on up there with "Ford vs. Chevy".I typically don't buy new vehicles with new vehicle warranty and all that jazz. Makes the decision much easier - I've got a couple of very, VERY good independent shops I use for "general purpose" stuff, and a spattering of uber-competent marque specific shops for Porsche, Mercedes, BMW, Volvo, Land Rover. Those specific marques (and others) take special tools (including software and computer interfaces in some cases) that a general purpose shop won't have.In general, my bias has been AWAY from ever showing up at a dealer except to purchase dealer-only parts I needed right then. Then we bought this lovely right-off-the-showroom-floor 2007 Honda Odyssey Touring... You know, with the Michelin PAX run-flat system? That you can only have tires replaced on at Honda dealers (and very, very rare Michelin dealers)? Yeah. Good times. We also discovered - the hard way - that the battery terminal post size is every so slightly larger than "industry standard" - so when you buy a non-Honda battery, the electrical connection is a bit tenuous. And that the "positive" battery terminal cable isn't just 00-gauge wire, it's a complex wiring harness, that if bent sharply to enable rapid extraction of the battery at say an independent battery shop, causes intermittent shorts in other parts of wiring harness leading unexplainable and undesirable outcomes.... and is very, VERY expensive to fix. And not covered, even by my extended warranty. I could go on, really, for some time.So dealer maintenance it is, for us, for new Hondas. There is stuff that as one of my colleagues likes to say "is well known by them that knows", and is completely opaque to everyone else. For a brand new car, or a new-to-you car that has only ever been serviced at the dealer, I'd go with dealer service. For anything else, I'd go with a really good independent shop. And do your research before you buy - it's getting harder and harder to buy a car that doesn't have three special purpose computers, all of which have to be working right AND talking to each other, for it to work right...Oh - and under ABSOLUTELY NO CIRCUMSTANCES does "Jiffy Lube" or anything similar qualify as "really good independent shop".EVER.
Why doesn’t Uber charge a cancellation fee to drivers if they cancel a ride 15-20 minutes after accepting it?
There are different reasons for cancelling. You could get stuck in traffic and are having a hard time getting there. Driver couldve had a flat, car breaks down, etc… Driver had an emergency at home. There are legitimate reasons. These are some reasons I can see why you cant charge driver.BUTThere are drivers who use both Uber/Lyft. Lets say they accept a trip on Lyft en route Uber surges or its a 45+ min trip they will cancel Lyft and take the Uber trip. Is that fair to rider absolutely not. From some drivers perspective its fair because they are running their own business & cannot afford to lose money. Lyft is notorious for sending you on 15/20 min pick ups to go 5 min up the road. Now driver went 20 min on his time & gas to take a pax a mile up the road for 3.45. This happens on Uber also but driver may make .50 to 1.50 extra on long pick ups, still isnt much but more than Lyft does. As unfair as it is to rider its unfair and costly to the driver. Uber/Lyft need to come up with a way to compensate drivers but the only way to do it is increase the fare at riders expense. Thats not going to happen. The only thing that may help if a rider is going a short distance is to tip the driver $2/3. Pax have to understand this is a business to these drivers they cannot afford to lose money on these trips. How is that fair? How would pax feel if they went to their job and boss said “we are going to take 3hrs of your pay today which you will work for free". That would never fly as it shouldn't. Maybe U/L could come up with bonuses if drivers dont cancel at all during the week unless the can prove is wasnt their fault ex. flat tire pax not at location. Drivers that take X amt of short trips per day get X amt bonus. This is all U/L doing they are the ones that have control over everything. Pax complains price was high, driver goes to wrong pick up location, makes wrong turn when using app its the drivers fault (sometimes it is but most times its not) etc.. U/L never get blamed no matter what its always the drivers fault.Do I agree its fair to rider that they get cancelled after 20 min absolutely not. Do I understand why driver does this absolutely. Do I drive this way no I dont. When I have both apps on which is not often as soon as I accept trip I close other app. I know its tempting to do what other drivers do so by shutting it down immediately theres no temptation. I also learned its not worth taking a Lyft request thats more than 5 min away or it will cost me $ in most instances. If I do have Lyft on I decline pick ups more than 5 min away this way it will go right to next driver. Drivers are not employees of U/L every expense gas, car maintenance (oil, tires, trans fluid, oil changes, etc..) repaires, car washes, insurance, etc… is our responsibility. The amount of miles alone causes things to need repairs. Trust me it adds up. Since drivers are not employees we cannot be forced to accept every request that pings our phone. So of course when we are going to lose money we are not going to accept and in some instances cancel rides for a better one. Who suffers?Just like rating system pax rate drivers low for stupid reasons and now drivers are rating pax low for stupid reasons (although drivers get fired when they hit 4.6). Pax may not get thrown off platform but I can tell you drivers are not accepting request if pax has low rating. So if its taking awhile to find a driver or drivers are cancelling it could just be your rating. Lots of drivers rate low for no tips so if your gdtting cancelled or its taking awhile to get driver you may want to tip to bring up your rating. Uber you may want to tip cash as driver has to rate you immediately Lyft they have 24hrs. Before anyone jumps on me I personally dont rate below 5 stars for no tip. Just telling you what I see in forums everywhere.U/L sit back and make the big bucks. They dont care about the drivers the only readon they care about pax is their the paying customer. They cause these issues not the drivers. Of course drivers will get blamed.Added thought.Pax cancels us when we are sitting outside waiting for them. We just drive 15/20 min on our time, sat outside for 5 min only to get canceled. We get 3.75. In that 25 min of wasting our time we couldve had a fare that wouldve made us 10.00 to 200.00. Pax may need to get another driver (yes not fair) but in drivers case pax may have lost a driver lots of money in 25 min. It just may be a decent honest driver. U/L has successfully pitted driver against pax and pax against driver in some situations. While they sit back and make all the money. Dont hate the driver hate the people who caused this all to happen and will not fix it.
