PDF Editor FAQ
Were you shocked when someone said you are rude, because you thought you were the nicest person?
I had a jaw-dropper of a moment about 3 months ago- I don’t actually know if I was in the wrong or not to this day. I don’t know. I might be. You decide. I’ll accept it if I was.I was at a home improvement store and just needed a can of aerosol spar varnish. All aerosol cans are locked in a cabinet at this store. It was exceptionally busy and there was only a single person on in the paint department (I’m looking at you, Bunnings!).The paint guy was talking to an old couple about the benefits of different types of paints right next to the cabinet that I needed the can from. I waited patiently for about 10 - 15 minutes while this went on. The paint guy was making those motions that he’d just be a minute while glancing at me so I didn’t mind.I checked my texts, etc. while I waited. The wife turned to the husband and spoke to him about the different types of paint for about a minute while the paint guy just stood there (not involved in the discussion with old folk) so I asked him to unlock the aerosol cabinet while he was waiting which was directly behind him. That was all I needed, just for him to pop the lock.Actual request:Me: “Would you mind unlocking the aerosol cabinet there?”The old couple WENT OFF!Old Lady at the top of her voice: ”YOU WAIT YOUR TURN! HOW RUDE ARE YOU? ”Old Man snaps: “You are SO disrespectful. Who do you think you are? I’ll make a complaint about you - see if I don’t” He’s pointing at me aggressively.Me: Thinking holy sh*t - do NOT get in a fistfight with the old folks… but out loud: “Okay, sure”. I’ve got my hands raised in that universal I’m not armed gesture.Image source: Smeeeeeeeeeee. The paint guy steps in front of the pointing finger guy and he just turns and unlocks the cabinet before shepherding the old couple away. The couple continues to glare at me while speaking at the top of their voices about how rude the current generation is.I’m unsure who the old guy was going to report me to.I don’t know if I was rude for asking the question or not. I thought I was a nice mostly polite person.I was pretty stunned/shocked by the whole encounter. It’s the first and only time a stranger has accused me of being rude. It’s also a personal policy of mine to never get in a fight with an old person (Or anyone for that matter - I win every fight by 100 meters). It’s a lose/lose. If you win the fight, you just beat up an old person. If you lose the fight, you just got your ass kicked by an old person.
The renowned Wilfrid Laurier University and certain of its choice professors presumably have strong rational defenses against the two law suits recently made against them by Lindsay Shepherd and Jordan Peterson, but what could their defense be?
In Shepherd’s case, here’s the opinion of one lawyer:http://stlawyers.ca/lindsay-shepherd-lawsuit/Despite the headline, which says Shepherd’s case is “utter nonesense”, what it really says is that her claim for damages is outrageously high. But that’s how these suits typically go. You start with a high amount and force the other side to argue them down. The opinion also expressed in that article is that Shepherd will win her case, just not with that level of damages. WLU has already admitted the inquisition which Shepherd was submitted to should never have taken place, and that Shepherd did nothing wrong by showing the TV Ontario clip to her class. The questions for the court will be:Was Shepherd’s career damaged; if so, by how much?Who should be held responsible for the damages, and in what proportion? We have WLU, Rambucanna, Pimlot and Joel all named in the lawsuit. As for Peterson’s lawsuit, I suspect the problem he’s going to run into is that the slanderous statements made by Rambuccana et al were, I think, all made privately. They only became public when Shepherd released the recording of her meeting (inquisition) with Rambuccana, Pimlot and Joel. Slander in Ontario falls under the Libel and Slander Act (see Law Document English View) and primarily concerns itself with broadcasting. The problem for Peterson in this case may be that the slanderous statements made about him were not intended to be broadcast. The court may wonder why Peterson isn’t suing Lindsay Shepherd, since it was her release of the recording which caused the slander to be broadcast. However, filing this lawsuit will allow Peterson’s legal team to request related emails and other correspondence as part of discovery. That may turn up other evidence of slanderous statements about Peterson being spread within the University itself, without the University doing anything to stop it, and independent of the release of the Shepherd recording to the media. That might give him the toehold he needs to pursue a slander claim. My own opinion is that the most likely outcome is that these cases will settle out of court. There will be a lot of pressure to settle, even though both Shepherd and Peterson may not wish to do so because they are both fighting for the principle of freedom of expression. WLU will want a settlement, rather than a court battle in which the outcome might be a Pyrrhic victory if the public turns further against them and enrollment plummets. If the case does go to trial, my guess is that Shepherd will win but at a much lower amount of damages. I also suspect Peterson’s case will get dismissed, on some legal technicality. But I don’t think that will matter to him. Based on what he’s said in his video describing his statement of claim, his objective is to make WLU, and other universities, think twice about creating a hostile environment for academic freedom and freedom of expression by increasing the risk of lawsuits when students or faculty run afoul of the self-appointed Thought Police who have infected our campuses.Even if Shepherd and Peterson lose in court, they’ve won something by elevating public attention to the issue of political correctness run amok on university campuses, and by raising the cost when university administration encourages it (through policies and training) or does nothing to stop it from trampelling other Charter Rights, such as freedom of expression. There’s a battle waging wherein the extreme left is seeking to establish a hierarchy of rights within the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, such that gender rights wind up at the top of the hierarchy, above other rights such as the right to freedom of expression or the right to freedom of religion. The Charter itself does not set out any priority of rights. That’s done through case law. And it seems evident to me that gender activists are increasingly using the courts to establish the primacy of gender rights over other rights. The most recent case of that was the Supreme Court ruling against Trinity Western University (see Law Society of British Columbia v. Trinity Western University), which horrifically overturned an earlier precedent and has now established that gender rights can supersede religious rights even within a private institution. Elsewhere, religious groups are fighting the government’s new requirement to attest to upholding Charter rights, as well as non-Charter rights (specifically “reproductive rights”), in order to get funding from the Summer Jobs Program. Gender activists will fight tooth and nail to win this because it also sets a precedent for gender rights over religious rights. In the United States, the war is being waged using Title IX to ensure gender rights supersede the Bill of Rights.
What are some of the best moments of humanity?
The above incident happened way back in the year 2015. I wasn't aware of this until today when it appeared on my Facebook feed. The woman and the girl in the above picture are mother and daughter who set out of their home to take admission in a college. They were supposed to go to Anna Arangam, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University at Coimbatore but by mistake they reached Anna University at Chennai.Mind you, the distance between Coimbatore and Chennai is roughly 500kms (300mi).They were supposed to be present in Coimbatore at 8:30am and here they were in Chennai at 6:30am asking for directions unaware of the fact that they were at the wrong place. The mother who was a shepherd by profession and her daughter who had cleared her 12th board exams lost all hopes of securing the admission when they realised their mistake. It was impossible for them to reach Coimbatore on time. Due to this mistake, the girl's entire career was at risk.Just when all doors seem to be closed, a group of regular walkers at Anna University spotted the duo in trouble. On understanding their situation, the group quickly flung into action. The group, from their own pockets, spent ₹10,500 and booked flight tickets to Coimbatore for both of them. They didn't just stop there, they bought breakfasts for them and also contacted the college at Coimbatore, requesting them to grant some extra time for securing the admission. Both of them took the flight and reached Coimbatore at 11:28am. By God's grace and with the help of those angels that he had sent in the form of those walkers, the daughter got admission at the Coimbatore college.Even though it's an old story, this is one of the best acts of humanity I have ever come across. It's really heartwarming to see a group of people go an extra mile to help two strangers in distress.Source:http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/chennai/girl-loses-way-walkers-fly-her-to-coimbatore-for-admission/article7521315.ece
