When my husband was unexpectedly diagnosed with a terminal illness I went to see a local attorney to make sure his advance directive and medical power of attorney was in order. These were documents that I filled out at the hospital when he was admitted. He took these documents from me and told me they had to be redone. For this he was going to charge me several thousand dollars. He refused to return the paperwork to me until I went home and thought about it overnight. I was under extreme stress at the events that were unfolding. When I returned the following day he told me he had reviewed our documents as well as our situation and he recommended that I needed to sell a property we had purchased several months earlier in order to qualify for some financial assistance as we did not have health insurance. It’s so happened he knew someone who would take it off of our hands. It was a huge decision and I told him I did not want to sell the property. He told me I did not seem interested in the best interest of my husband’s health. I became very upset and left. I asked my brother-in-law to go by and pick up the documents. This attorney refused to give them to him, as he could only release them to me. I went to see another attorney and told her what was happening. She wrote him a scathing letter and demanded he release the documents immediately, which he did.
