In my last fulltime role it was made clear to me (after I’d signed the contract and started work) than any leave requests one approved could be rescinded if the demands of the job needed it. Therefore it is entirely reasonable to expect MPs to cancel paid for holidays in view of the looming national catastrophe otherwise known as a hard Brexit.Postscript: I stayed at my last employer for just two years and (miracle of miracles) was made redundant with a reasonable pay-off just days before i was planning to resign.

My mother was in a catastrophic car accident. She crushed both feet and ankles, shattered her right knee and broke the femur in her left leg. She suffered a heart attack from the steering wheel and broke the frame of her chest loose from the back. She was in ICU for 30 days. While there, she had to have a trach tube put in. During that time, I fired 4 nurses and 1 doctor.The doctor was supposed to do a thoracentesis at 9pm. Moms meds were withheld pending the thoracentesis. By 11 pm, no doctor. I had the charge nurse call around and see if anything was happening in the hospital to delay the doctor. Nope, nada, nothing. A very quiet night. By midnight, I told the nurse to give Mom her meds and told her to call the doctor and let her know that I was cancelling the procedure until tomorrow and she wouldn’t be doing it.The doctor showed up about 10 minutes later ranting that I couldn’t cancel the procedure. Oh yes I could! I asked her why she hadn’t showed up at 9 as scheduled. She condescendingly informed me she was ‘Busy’. I told her “No you weren’t, I checked. Nothing has gone on tonight.” “So now, As power of attorney, I’m cancelling your procedure. And…..before you leave the floor, you will make a notation on her chart that No One will do anything until I get back at 7 am unless she becomes emergent.” I told her that if she’s used common courtesy and informed us that she was being delayed or at least an apology, things wouldn’t be like this.She started to storm out but I called her back and reminded her that she’d forgotten something. She went over and hastily scrawled a note and stormed off. The charge nurse was laughing when she left.

Would it be OK to go to my bosses’ boss to get permission for a leave?The very fact that you mention your immediate supervisor’s boss as the person you will seek permission from for a leave request would lead one to think that perhaps your immediate boss has refused the request.You would be committing a significant breach of conduct in the business world. ‘Chain of command’ as referred to in the military is a method to manage day to day activities in an orderly and predicable way. You are challenging authority and going around your boss because you don’t like his response to your request.While many employers recognize seniority as the guide to who is granted leave first (if multiple people are asking for the same time period) business necessity is another important factor. An example might be a deadline coming up for a project where you play a key role but you are requesting time off when your input would be critical. Peak periods of any business are always going to guide time off being granted as well.You have a right to be given a reason for the decision but if it is based on business operations it’s unlikely that your answer from a superior would be any different.Let me explain why what you want to do will only hurt you. Trust and willingness to follow rules in any undertaking is key to its success with the few exceptions being things like when the safety of people is at risk, laws are being violated or the entire organization could be damaged. When you demonstrate that you don’t respect the rules and want exceptions made for you, you lose the trust of management and your value to an organization drops SIGNIFICANTLY.Where a true hardship is involved, serious illness/death of a close family member, catastrophic loss -flood/fire etc. plead your case with HR. However, if you just want to take a vacation when the company needs you and your boss has refused those dates for your vacation you could be damaging your career to go around your boss.
