As a freshman physics major I derived the formula for the volume of a closed universe of uniform positive curvature. The formula is actually quite short: [math]V = 2 \pi^2 R^3[/math], where [math]R[/math] is the radius of curvature of space (not spacetime — I ignored time). I thought I was contributing something new, using only freshman-level calculus. I learned later that Riemann had beaten me to it by about 130 years.But the equation expanded as I developed it, covering an entire page, before it reduced down to that short form.I was only a little discouraged to learn that my equation wasn’t original. I was encouraged by the fact that our results were the same. And I felt I was making good progress to be only a century late. Maybe my next idea would only be 80 years late.

Did he say you “hit the ceiling”? That would be the term I’d expect if you could answer all the questions to the end of one or more subtests. It means the test has failed because you weren’t in the IQ range it is designed to test for.IQ tests fail to measure anything sensible anytime you’re outside the range and anytime you don’t think in the typical, predictable way that the test expects.On a short-form test, this usually starts happening at an IQ of about 115. Long-form tests don’t break down until about 130–145, but above 145, most IQ tests stop becoming accurate because you’re hitting so many ceilings on so many subtests. If you are learning-disabled or otherwise neurologically atypical, it can happen at any IQ—and it can make your IQ untestable because your subscore gaps are so big that no one number can represent your overall intelligence even as weakly as an IQ usually does.The IQ test you took was most likely designed to test people up to 130 or 145—which is two or three standard deviations above the typical.Why can’t you test the full range? Rarity.If you assume that IQ scores are normally distributed, with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15, you can see that the higher the IQ score, the fewer people have it; the lower the IQ score, the fewer people have it. Same goes for people below 70 or below 55—the tail on the left.Now pretend you’re making an IQ test. You have to determine how many people can solve a particular problem—is it so easy that nine in ten people can solve it, or is it so hard that only one in ten people can solve it? For this purpose, you gather a large group of people to take your test, and you count up how many people could do each task.Because you’re assuming that IQ is a normal distribution, you take for granted that about one in 44 people can do a question that a person with an IQ of 130 can be expected to answer. To have a good chance of detecting which questions are at that level of difficulty, because only one in 44 of your sample will be capable of giving you any data at that IQ level, you’ll need a lot of people to try out your test. Once you get to the point of trying to figure out which questions can be answered by one in 741 people, for an IQ score of 145, your sample needs to be absolutely huge. And it only gets harder after that.IQ tests are meant to find out if you’re below average, whether you need special education. They’re useful to find out if you’re gifted and should be given harder work to do or jumped up a grade. They’re useful to show whether you have any really pronounced weaknesses or strengths which need to be taken into account. But once you get past about 130, it doesn’t matter that much what your exact IQ score is; the test can’t tell, and it’s your particular talents and affinities that matter much more. That’s why gifted-and-talented education has to be so individualized; same for special ed. (Me, I was twice-exceptional—both gifted and learning disabled. My IQ was untestable when I was a kid because of the subscore gaps.)I think what you should take away from this is that, if you hit the ceiling in one or more tests, you performed adequately. You probably have a decent amount of academic talent. Your IQ is probably 115 or higher if you took the short-form IQ test (the one that takes about twenty minutes), or about 130 or higher if you took the long-form (the one that takes about six hours). What it is, exactly, I can’t tell you; nor, evidently, could the psychologist you asked to test you. You may be gifted, or just bright.But does it really matter which?Check out this chart:Notice how the average IQ for even the hardest jobs—doctors and scientists and college professors—lands at 115 to 125? Those aren’t very rare scores at all. About one in six people will get a 115 or higher, and that’s enough to be an average doctor.Conclusion? IQ isn’t the biggest factor in what you’re able to do with your brain. Sure, it’s a factor, but a small enough factor that some janitors and some doctors have the same IQ scores. What matters much more is how you use what you have, which resources you can access, what the quality of your education is, what your talents and preferences are, and (unfortunately) the social class, race, and economic environment you were born into.If you’re really bright, then sure, have fun with it. Go off and learn things. But don’t limit yourself; don’t assume that you have to be the stereotypical brainiac. One of the smartest people I ever met works as a bus driver, and he’s among the happiest people I know, too.
