PDF Editor FAQ

What's the strangest request you've had at McDonald’s?

Tell me a jokeThis was actually when I interviewed to work there. I was just out of high school, looking for a summer job before starting college. They had a big hiring drive for all the area stores, all held at the local offices for the franchise. I dressed for an interview, by golly, coat and tie! They called us into the manager’s office three at a time. He looked at me in my Sunday go-to-church clothes, looked at my application showing I had very good grades in school, and said, “tell me a joke.”“Pardon me, sir?”“Tell me a joke.”So I told him a joke, related to a job interview. He laughed, and said I should come by the next day at 1:00 PM for a “formal interview.”I did, and was told to go wait in a large conference room with a bunch of other people. At the scheduled time, the manager came in and said, “congratulations, you’re all hired.”Go out and scrub the parking lotI usually worked what we called “lot and lobby” duty — I was responsible for keeping the lobby, parking lot, and drive-thru clean. (I’ll confess that’s where they put the employees who weren’t quite incompetent enough to be fired, but they wanted out of cooking or cashiering. My three months working there between high school and college were not exactly glory days.)Now, normally cleaning the parking lot and drive-thru just meant going outside every hour or so and picking up any litter. And at dusk, I was supposed to go out lower the American and McDonald’s flags — my years in Boy Scouts came in handy there, I suppose. Parking lot was not a hard part of my job. I worked there over the summer, so it was nice to step outside after dark into some cool air, too.One day, my store manager was very intense. The area manager, who reported directly to the guy who owned all of the McDonald’s in the area, was coming by to inspect. He told me to scrub the parking lot and drive-thru. I essentially asked him “how?” He took me to the basement storeroom, opened a cardboard box, and handed me a large plastic bottle of official McDonald’s Parking Lot and Drive-Thru Cleaner. That amuses me to this day — they just didn’t have some heavy duty cleanser, it was an official McDonald’s cleanser, with the M on it and everything. (He also handed me a putty knife to scrape the gum off the sidewalks. It was not, to my memory, an official McDonald’s putty knife.)I don’t remember much else of that, beyond the futility of it. It wasn’t going to get rid of the oil stains. They had me hook up the hose, anyway — couldn’t I have just hosed it down? But I wasn’t paid $3.35 an hour to think, now was I? (Yep, this was long enough ago minimum wage was $3.35/hour. On the other hand, one hour’s wage was probably two gallons of gas for my 1977 Toyota Corolla, with maybe enough left over to buy a comic book or two off the “Hey Kids! Comics!” spinner rack at the convenience store where I got gas.)Clean under the cow-catcherIf you lived in or visited Knoxville, TN during the Eighties, you might remember that the McDonald’s on Merchants Road in Norwood had a “train” in the lobby. It was a formed plastic replica of an old-fashioned steam train, with a locomotive and roofs over the tables so they looked like cars in the train. When I was a kid, it was great fun to eat there. I looked on-line for pictures, but they renovated many years ago, and I think they just have a ball bin now.One night, we were doing the pre-closing clean-up. I was sweeping the floor around the train, and my manager was upset that I wasn’t cleaning around the train properly, especially not under the cow-catcher. I showed him what I was doing — I had one of those big wide, flat sweeping brooms, and I was running it under the cow catcher as far as I could. What else could I do?He proceeded to lift up the cow catcher, something no one else had ever shown me, in the two months (that just seemed like centuries) I had been working there. Can I buy your hat?I worked at McDonald’s in the summer of 1984. The company did a big promotional tie-in with the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles that year, which is remembered as having not worked out as well as planned. One thing our local stores did was have the male employees wear baseball caps with the McDonald’s logo and Olympic rings. The Olympics were drawing to a close, if not actually over. I was working in the lobby, and a lady came up and asked if the hat I was wearing was for sale — she was a collector of either McDonald’s or Olympic memorabilia. I told her that I didn’t think they were sold to the general public, but we were supposed to switch to the standard disposable paper hats the next day, and I’d sell her mine, since we had to buy them ourselves once I could. She said she’d stop by the next day, but never did.

What is the secret to happiness that nobody talks about?

Pain. But first it’s important that “happiness” is the wrong word. Happiness is fleeting. We don’t want to be happy all the time (we ride roller coasters and watch movies that make us cry because we need those other emotions too). What we want is CONTENTMENT and for that, we need PAIN. Pain that exists in balance with pleasure. We of course use pleasure as a motivation towards and pain for a motivation away from. We need both, in ample quantities throughout life. The better you are at managing and dealing with your own pain, the greater pleasure is when you have access to it.And this is largely psychological and reasonably scientific. I won’t say “studies have shown” because I value (most) psychological studies less than the paper they’re printed on. It’s worth noting that repeated meta studies of psychological studies have demonstrated again that only the core cadre of hard science practitioners (neuropsychology, cognition, etc.) are evidenced based. The rest is populated with hyper partisan people who have made it into a teleological field for them to reshape the world, I presume. At any rate, the “secret” isn’t a secret. It’s been known since the Aristotle and Yuanhua. Marcus Aurelius, Maimonides, Galen, Plato, and LITERALLY hundreds of others have known this and only recently did we delude ourselves into believing otherwise. Suffering, pain, discomfort in INCREASING proportions are what make you content, not the other way around. People who endure harsh trials in life, who work very hard, endure both physical and emotional suffering — sufficient to bruise and scrape them, but not break them over and over — is the key to contentment and success in life.Pain is the salt in the dessert. Pain is the benchmark perspective on what pleasure is not. A life of pleasure without pain is like always chasing that cocaine high — you never get it. You always chase it because you have never created the rubric by which you understand the hell you could wallow under or the heavens you could soar in. You must feel pain, regularly and in emotional and physical intensities you previously thought you could not endure. But you chose to do it anyway.People who run to pleasure FIRST are always the most miserable, weak, worthless people you will ever know. The people who run into danger? Yeah, we all know who and there’s a reason they are heroes and respected. We all have fear, confronting the fears is (nearly) always a choice. If you forever “choose” to run to pleasure and from your fears, you’re not really living; you don’t have perspective and you are not exercising your emotions and making them stronger through exposure to your bugbears. For example. Who has had the more content, more robust, more productive life: Mary Edwards Walker — one of the MOST badass people (man or woman) in American history: female surgeon/doctor (in an era where they didn’t exist), Civil War veteran, ran out into the hail of bullets to save lives; only woman to be awarded the (US) Medal of Honor, abolitionist, prisoner of war (by the Confederacy) Union spy, suffragette, a goddamned warrior and lesbian icon OR Heather Cho (Cho Hyun-ah), spoiled rich cunt who assaulted a woman over nuts. She was handed her job as an airline executive by her daddy. One advanced human rights in ways few of us can imagine. The other is an embarrassment to humanity.A quick litmus test: identify the person who chooses to become stronger rather than the person who tries lighten the load.Walker — Like a modern Atlas, this superwoman shrugged the sins of the world onto her shoulders and made YOUR life better.Cho — Avoided hard work, forced others to make her life easier, looked for ways to lighten her load while making the lives of others more miserable. But it’s something even MORE important within that. Enduring suffering won’t magically make you content—there are lots of misrelate people confronting painful and fearful situations by circumstance. It is ONLY in the WILLINGNESS —the unrelenting, passionate, unstoppable, insatiable willingness— to look at your pain, your fears, your suffering and walk to it, never run from it, approach it and neutralize it — that is the source of the most reliable content. Nobody tells Olympics stories about the guy who got the easy gold metal or the boring story of a woman who coasted through college and got easy A’s in Physics. We know, instinctively, that pain molds and forms us. But in the past 25 years, people (especially parents, even my own) began to believe that it was good to alleviate pain. IT was good to build kids up relentlessly to make them stronger and wiser and more civilized. But it isn’t working. Hard work, and not the “hard work you just want to do” but really hard, painful, fearful, complex work that pushes you every day of your life, that wears you out, that puts you in emotional anguish — that work, that work makes you better. It makes you more content. It makes you stronger. It makes you more resilient. It is the modern era of increasing demands for low-friction, low-pain, low-frustration tasks (especially directed at kids) that is leaving them unprepared for the truly painful and difficult task of being content and successful in life while denying them the rich reward of physical and emotional pain that the mind needs to keep itself in balance. In a world where people run from their fears, their suffering, their triggers, their enemies, be the bold person who walks up to your fears, your suffering, your triggers and your enemies and look at them and confront them. You will be better for it. Whatever it is you’re afraid of, confront it. If the thing you’re afraid of is simply being seem as wrong/factually incorrect (we all are, BTW) then start making a habit of telling people when you’re wrong. If you’re afraid of gay men, go hang with gay men. If you’re afraid of dogs, go be with dogs. If you’re afraid of blood (as I am) you could make plans to hunt and field dress an animal (as I am … hopefully soon — I’ve got a date for November). And remember — the biggest bugbear we all have in our lives, is our selves. So while you’re running to the things that cause you pain and suffering, do recall, you were there for every failure in your life and that sometimes running to another fear means running from yourself, and that isn’t a good thing. You were the one consistency every bruised knee or brush with the law. You are your own worst enemy and until you confront that person and wage your inner jihad with her/him, then you will never have fought the most important battle of your life.(There are, of course, the kinds of fears —a burning building— that clearly I’m not talking about. Let the pros run into those.)†Largely because the field has become populated due, in part, to our obsession with making sure EVERYBODY gets a college degree. Psychology is the low-lying fruit in the sciences (if it’s even an actual scientific program). If it’s the BA version, then it’s about on par with basket weaving, except the latter has some real world applications.
