May I flip this question back around?I am interested in how you can ask this question as if it were still unconfirmed as a condition after reams of evidence (going back to the 1930's in the US) and almost 25 years of added confirmation by more specific studies, statistics and literally tens of thousands of patient accounts of being helped, not to mention scores of serious books by people with serious credentials. Even the simplest search on Google or Google Scholar will yield boatloads of evidence.What do you expect skeptics to say after all of that today? That all of mental health is suspect, or just ADD? And what do you imagine might be "shown" to be true instead? That these people are simply weak, lazy or lacking a good upbringing? And how do you imagine such "proof" would be found?If that last paragraph is closer to what you suspect or hope to have confirmed, I'd have to guess that there might not be much in the way of empirical evidence that would change your mind, nor any number of first person stories that would make a material difference in your perceptions.The same debate could be had over many other psychological conditions, such as depression or post traumatic stress, that rely on a patient's report of inner experience. Many people find all of psychology suspicious for this reason, and it may be a fruitless quest to change their feelings.But you are truly open-minded with no convictions either way, you can do a lot of that research for yourself in the many, many prior threads about ADHD right here on Quora.Later update..Regarding your (later?) point about anxiety, even that is not a universal trait of ADDers. I have known countless ADDults (including myself) with low anxiety, calm under stress and a resilient temperament, but we still can all struggle with low stimulus tasks that have low levels of feedback and get stuck chasing our tails when juggling too much input at once or torn about choosing between of all of the very valid paths we can see.

It is not a myth that Canadiens come to the U S for treatment they can get in Canada but "flock" is probably a strong word.I used to work in a hospital in Pinellas County, Fl. that performed large numbers of procedures on visiting Canadians every winter. No these weren't super rich people who flew on private jets. They were retirees renting an apartment for 3-6 months who needed an approved procedure and chose, for whatever reason, to have it done in Florida. Because the procedure was already approved their Canadian health plan would pay for it. Years ago these Canadian patients accounted for 30% of the hospital's winter quarter revenue.I don't know the current numbers but the Canadian plans have tightened their costs to where their patients now have to pay more out of pocket for treatment in the U.S. so obviously more Canadians are priced out of this option. The fact remains that when cost wasn't a factor many visiting Canadians had procedures done on the U.S. as opposed to back home. My guess is that it had to do with wait times as I've never heard a Canadian patient talk about poor quality in Canada the way the Brittish patients do about Britain, where anyone with a descent job pays extra to get treated outside of their National Health Service.

Background: I became rather adept at MIIS / MUMPS / M / MAGIC / call it what you will … a string manipulation program from MGH in the ‘60’s, that was worthless for most things but great at string manipulation.There is a prevalent electronic medical record of sorts, called MEDITECH. [That’s where MIIS came from.] It’s what the VA medical record is written in.I was really, really good at programming MIIS. I won’t go into the details.My hospital had “upgraded” to a total of eight (8) computer systems, most of which couldn’t talk to each other … ER to anything … outpatient to inpatient … radiology to anything … but MEDITECH had it all, and was reliable.Except for one weekend.I don’t want to get too technical, but MIIS was a multi-user system. Our original system could support 17 users (this was 1976) and then would crash. Actually, it supported about 10–12, and then would get VERY upset if more signed on.So one sign of malfunction was when it just didn’t work … or was extremely slow.So: One weekend, I went in to print all the patients for Monday. And MEDITECH wouldn’t work. It had been going down, on and off, for the previous, oh, week or so.I called IT to ask what was going on. “Oh, it’s not working.”“Yeah, I know that. What’s going on?”“We’re not sure.”“Have you checked the operating system?”“Uh …”“Check the operating system. I think it’s got a glitch.”“Ok …”Monday … no MEDITECH. Tuesday … no MEDITECH. At this point, I should mention that ALL the patient encounters created a separate account number; if a person went and saw a physician, then another, then had radiology and lab, that would be four (4) accounts. And MEDITECH created all the account numbers.“Have you checked the operating system?”“Yeah … we re-booted from the backup.”“Have you checked the back up?”… oh, shit. The BACKUP OS was corrupt.Five days of, essentially, unbillable contacts … in a billion dollar institution … because nobody checked the operating system.I do believe the head of IT lost her job over that one.
