The answer depends upon where the teacher works.Of course, we have to be fair to teachers. Regardless of the school, there can be students who may have little interest in learning. So in some public schools, problems are not in all cases, the problem of the school, but may reflect a broad range of social difficulties.Many “teachers” work in government schools, and those are not always amenable to changes in curriculum. Teachers in government schools worldwide are not at liberty to make changes in curriculum. Lesson plans are established by governments in the form of textbooks and in most government schools, the administrations do not allow teachers to innovate, because the lessons are all designed for a standardized education which produces standardized students.Also, all of the testing developed for government schools establish a grading system based entirely upon what is taught in the government lessons. Students or teachers who develop alternative studies may perform poorly in tests because the testing system is structured in a rigid way.What this means is that if a student is not prepared for the government approved system of tests by long hours of preparation, they may obtain a poor grade, and that effects their future.In private education, where teachers are allowed to innovate and show students subjects that are excluded from the government school systems, the minds and imaginations can accelerate all learning.For example, there is an interesting scene in the movieKnights of the South Bronx (TV Movie 2005) - IMDbwhich serves to illustrate the point. Here is my not so brief summary of the movie which is partly based upon a true story.A corporate executive loses his job, and takes employment in a public school teaching students about the 4th Grade level or so, because he is desperate to make money. The students are all from a ghetto neighborhood and they perform poorly. The teacher also happens to play chess in tournaments, and to make the students interested in learning, he begins teaching them how to play the game of chess in class. The students become interested and excited about learning something new. However, the school principle walks into the classroom, sees the game of chess being taught, and orders the teacher to return to using the textbooks for the assigned subjects.However, the teacher does teach about 5 or 6 of the students who are serious about learning chess, and begins taking the children to the local chess tournaments held at some of the better schools. They choose a name for their team, and it was called “The Knights of the South Bronx”. The students were winning chess games and the happy ending about those who advance in chess ratings, is that they get college scholarships.Why is that? It is because young chess players learn to read and write down the moves of the chess games that they play. When they study chess games of the great chess players, they study each move that has been printed in the books. They learn all about chess history in the books. They learn to do basic math by playing chess. They learn to think for themselves and to develop a strong vocabulary consisting of Mental Verbs and Nouns and that makes it possible for them to express their thoughts in essays and writing assignments for school.There is something similar about students who study amateur radio. When they finish their grade 1 through 12 studies, they might get a college scholarship in the sciences.This is all about just one kind of innovation that a teacher in a private school can sometimes offer.Innovations in education are possible when the “teacher” is permitted to explore alternatives.
