If you’re talking about football (soccer) then this is what scouts look for:Winning mentality: Scouts always look for those guys that are determined and would always want to help the team win. This is probably what scouts look for most.Talent: Now this may be controversial but a lot of scouts look for talent. Scouts believe that this may benefit how a team plays and make the game ‘’less boring’’Confidence: Now, to be confident means to be a big talker on the pitch, direct your teammates and whenever there is a freekick or a penalty etc then you should always step up to it, that's what scouts would like to see, a leader.Speed: This plays a big part for scouts, if you have a lot of speed and can easily do 1v1’s against the opposition, scouts will love that.Defence: Seems simple but that's what scouts look for, if you’re always wanting the ball and always trying to gain possession for the team, then that’s someone a scout would want.Shooters: For the last and final one, scouts want players who like to take shots. It’s simple, if you score many goals, of course they’d want you because it brings teams wins.Hopefully I gave you insight on how to get scouted in football (soccer). There are many such problems in Indian Football, I’ll try to tackle some (pun intended):1.Youth System:As long as the youth system doesn’t improve we can’t go anywhere.We should take inspiration from the making of our Constitution. Several ideas of our Constitution has been taken for well-established governments, so we shouldn’t be afraid and ashamed of taking ideas from footballing nations. Germany, Spain and Belgium have great depths in their squad thanks to their successful youth systems. Youth academies also inculcate discipline, which is important for any team sport.India has really great resources and immense potential to become a great footballing nation but lacks a system which can produce rational footballers consistently. Fans of Barcelona (me!!), Bayern Munich, Manchester United know this aspect very well and can’t ignore it.2. Coaches:Now, the main issue. In ISL, franchises don’t hesitate to buy 40+ aged marquee players but don’t give special attention to good tacticians. People rarely think on this aspect. Good (and beautiful) football can only be achieved with good managers. They are also fine mentors and bring invaluable experience. If you think Roberto Carlos and Zico are great managers, then I would have pity on your footballing knowledge. Now, after knowing what is exactly a good tactician and a good man manager, you won’t be able to find one world class manager in India. Managers like Klopp and Guardiola can transform a mediocre players into internationals and give more chances to the youth. In China, the clubs blissfully pay millions for decent players but can’t appoint a good coach for their teams. That’s why China is not such a good footballing nation. Also, Italy and Netherlands failed to qualify for this edition of the World Cup (OUR BENCHMARK for a good footballing nation) due to bad tacticians.3. Exposure to Top-flight European football:A few would realise that the Asian and African teams consistently playing in the world cup editions (Japan, S. Korea, Ghana, etc.) have at least some presence in the top divisions in Europe (La Liga, PL, Bundesliga, Serie A, Ligue One, Eredivisie, etc).Shinji KagawaSon Heung-minThis helps the players move out of their comfort zone, realize the competition and perform against the best players in the world. In our squad only Gurpreet Singh Sandhu had a stint in one of the top flights in Europe. As our football infrastructure is in shambles, this is only way out. Regular scouting by top flight clubs should take place regularly. Nations like Croatia and Belgium continue to provide the best footballing talents to the world by allowing players to play in better leagues.Conclusion:If India has to improve in football, then it has to do well in all these three fronts. Because of no well planned diet, our players are struggling to cope with the physicality of other well nurtured teams and leagues like PL demand physicality and height advantage over tactics.
