The US has fielded infrared search sensors on fighters for a very long time; the Air Defence Command interceptors (the F-101 Voodoo, F-102 Delta Dagger and F-102 Delta Dart), the F-8 Crusader and F-4B Phantom all used infrared search sensors as a means to passively detect targets before locking them up with radar.They fell from favour as radars improved (in search range, scan area, and ease of use), but the desire to detect passively, plus improvements in infrared sensing and signal processing, led to a revival in their fortunes. The F-22 had space, weight and power for an IRST system (it wasn’t fitted as far as I know) and the F-35 has excellent passive detection capability.

I’m an Air Force brat, both of my parents were Air Force officers. My dad did a tour as an Electronic Warfare officer during the Vietnam War he later got his MD. My mother was in for 12 years, she left before I was born. One of her assignments was as an administration officer for the 523rd Tactical Fighter Squadron.So this is coming from someone who had read a bit on the Vietnam War.During the Vietnam war, it was the best fighter in the US inventory. I don’t know if it ever happened, but at least in theory during the Linebacker Campaign, it was possible to have a USAF strike package composed of almost nothing but F-4 Phantom IIs.The F-4 was originally designed to fly fleet defense for the US Navy with a secondary ground-attack role then it got adopted by the Air Force. In part this was because of Robert S. McNamara’s desire to see the military use common equipment whenever possible. McNamara had a lot to be desired as a secretary of defense but if the USAF adopting the F-4 Phantom II was his idea must have been done at 12:00 since the broken clock was right.In the early 1960s the Air Force’s designation would have been F-110A SpectreWhile the Navy used F4H Phantom II. Then the modern triservice designation system was introduced and the Navy versions in service became the F-4A and F-4B and the Air Force’s first version became the F-4C.The differences between the B and C were tires and the C had flight controls in the back and the F-4C was originally matched with the AIM-4 Falcon missile. Bruce Gordon an F-102 and F-106 pilot says the Falcom was a decent missile when carried by the F-102 and F-106 The Air force switched to the AIM-9 Sidewinder.The F-4 was built around the AIM-7 Sparrow missile and the first beyond visual range kills in history were recorded by F-4’s using the combat tree IFF system.Even though the Navy and Air Force F-4’s shared a lot in common both services developed the F-4 to suit their needs. I don’t believe the Navy never armed their Phantoms with gun pods while Marines did. the Air Force not only put gunpods on theirs but also designed a version with a gun under the nose, the F-4E. The F-4E would get improved slats to improve maneuverability. The Navy J and later models had better radar.The F-4 was selected to replace the F-105 in the Wild Weasel role in the 1970s. The First Wild Weasel F-4’s were the EF-4C which were used along side the F-105 during the Linebacker campaigns, but after the Vietnam war, F-4E’s were upgraded to F-4G Wild Weasels.Then when the F-4 was replaced it took over 5 fighters to do so. All the F-teens were designed to replace the F-4. The F-14 was to take over the fleet defense role, the F-15 the air superiority mission for the Air Force and the F-16 and F-18 were designed to be multirole do it all fighters.
