The only thing I don't love about Canada is the job market. Canadians are usually welcoming to new immigrants but the job market is not. The Canadian experience barrier is actually a sugarcoated ill-minded corporate and social culture that lacks innovation, reformation and courage. The Canadian workplace values safeness and stableness more than risks and rewards; that’s why they are reluctant to embrace changes brought in by new comers. Canadian experience, in another words, is basically that they want new immigrants to do things in a Canadian way, interact with others like other Canadians do and be humble and nice.I emigrated to Canada from China, had obtained my master degree from one of the best business schools in Canada and also held a CPA, CGA qualification. I had 6 years experience in accounting before I moved there. I networked a lot with alumni and went frequently to reach out to working professionals. My English is fluent, and I also speak Mandarin and French. So theoretically I should be in an very advantageous position than other immigrants. However the truth is I never got a job offer, not even an interview from any Canadian companies. The only interview I had was from PWC US. How ironic, isn't It? Just because I didn't have a “Canadian experience”.Then I moved to the US after graduation for personal reasons. My situation was supposed to be way worse here than being in Canada: no American degree, no American networks, no American experience and no American CPA at that time, nothing. Guess what happened? I got 4 job offers within one month. And more importantly, i was not underpaid for my first job. And recruiters are still chasing. Basically jobs just fell from the sky and landed on my feet. What I did was literally sitting at home waiting for recruiters’ calls. The next year after my first job I landed a new job by sitting at home, again. Despite my previous boss's bitterness, I moved on to the new job where my pay increased by 50%.Drastically different, isn't it? Because companies in the US are outward looking. They do businesses with people all over the world. My language skills become my advantage of being able to communicate with the Chinese clients; my international accounting experience becomes useful when the US company needs International reporting for their overseas subsidiaries.Canadians only do majority of the business with themselves, and they don't like taking chances that much. The business culture in Canada is overly prudent and risk adverse. I personally don't believe it was my problem of not being able to get even an interview in Canada, it is the extreme Canadian conservatism at workplace to blame for. Economy being sluggish is one thing. But the mindset of refusing to give a chance to new immigrants without Canadian experience is the main cause that largely costs the entire society and the economy . That’s why you will see highly skilled masters and doctors are driving cabs in Toronto. Mark my words : Canada, you want the brightest immigrants, but what’s the point if you don’t use them?Another example is internal referrals. In Canada you have to network really hard to get people to refer you for a position. While in the US, it is ME going out, begging people to allow me to refer them. If they make It, I will get mometary rewards from the company; if they don't, the business still goes on and people move on. However, in Canada people are not willing to refer others, because they get stuck on the fear that their position might be replaced if the candidate is too good or their reputation is discredited if the candidate turns out not to be so good.Remember, it has more to do with the society than you. If you still decide to go there, you will need to make sure you become part of it to get by.
