PDF Editor FAQ
Why is the city of Slough a laughing stock in Britain?
Thing is, though, Slough DID have a ton of landmarks and claims to fame. It just went and bulldozed them all, because the local council’s run by a bunch of short-sighted profiteering idiots.William Herschel’s had his famous observatory and 40-Foot-Telescope here, and discovered Uranus through it from Slough. they let it go derelict, and knocked it down in the 60s. The last remaining piece of the mirror was subsequently moved to the Herschel Collection of the National Maritime Museum, in the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, London; the William Herschel Society got there too late to stop Slough council, and had to settle for restoring its 2nd choice location of 19 New King Street in Bath instead, for the inauguration of The Herschel Museum of Astronomy in 1981. And instead, Slough wound up with this- yet another nondescript office block, called ‘Observatory House’, which has lain vacant for the majority of its existence:Also used to have The Royal Hotel, which opened in 1842 and was used by Queen Victoria on her journeys to and from Paddington until a railway line extension to Windsor was built in 1849. The hotel was built by Charles Dotesio; it was constructed of yellow brick and stood in beautiful grounds. It was said to have some furniture from the royal palace at Versailles, which had passed into the hands of dealers after the French Revolution, and some valuable Gobelin tapestries.Following the opening of the branch line to Windsor, the Royal Hotel fell upon hard times; Dotesio gave up the hotel in 1852 and the building was empty for many years, and in 1863, Major Edward Mackenzie of Fawley Court near Henley gave the British Orphan Asylum the sum of £14,000 to buy and adapt the Royal Hotel as its new home. And when the British Orphan Asylum removed to Watford in 1920, the building was purchased by the Licensed Victuallers' Orphanage. It was then pulled down at the beginning of 1938, after the construction of the Licensed Victuallers' School on the site. Which itself then moved on to its current location in Ascot in 1969, with the school torn down and the site purchased by the supermarket giant which still owns it to the present day: Tesco. The second Royal Hotel was built from the former coaches mews of the first Royal Hotel, and was located on the opposite side of Mackenzie Street, facing Slough Railway Station. The south side of the mews was demolished in 1972; the entire building was demolished soon afterwards. And in its place? An utterly unremarkable, brutalist anonymous perpetually unoccupied office building. Which has itself now been demolished, having never had a single tenant, and been replaced by- yep, you guessed it, yet another unremarkable run-of-the-mill office building (still under construction).Slough also used to have its own version of the Hollywood Walk of Fame; the Granada Pavement of Fame, situated on Windsor Road outside the Granada Cinema, which was designed by American architect C. Howard Crane and opened in March 1938 with Leslie Howard and Bette Davis in “It’s Love I’m After”. Most of the actors and actresses who were involved in filming at Pinewood Studios, which then had the highest output of any studio in the world, attending premieres here, and began the tradition of immortalising each visit by each star placing their hand and foot prints & signature in wet cement outside the theatre commencing in 1939 (emulating Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, in Hollywood, California). So what did the council do? The cinema was closed in 1987, and was demolished ASAP in 1988 (illegally, in spite of having been a Grade I listed building); they knocked the cinema down, tore up all of those slabs- with only four of hundreds having managed to survive in salvageable condition to the present day, thanks to being carried away to safety in the back of a pick-up truck by the owner of the Wexham Nursery garden centre, situated just down the road from Pinewood Studios, and the rest turned into rubble. And what did they replace it with? Yep, that’s right- yet another nondescript, soulless office building, called ‘Charter Court’, which has laid vacant this entire time. Great job, Slough; “Roll over, Death”, indeed.Oh, and after The Hawker Aircraft Company bought Parlaunt Farm at Langley in 1938, they built their primary production factory and test airfield here, for the Hurricane Mk.1, Mk.11A, Mk.11B, Mk.11C, Mk.11D, Mk.IV, Mk.V, Sea Hurricane, Typhoon, Tempest and Fury. The P.1040 prototype performed jet engine trials at Langley, and the factory also helped assemble Hunter wings and fuselages. In Langley, they manufactured well over 8,000 military aircraft, especially the Hurricane during World War II and also the Tempest and Sea Fury. The final Hurricane built (a MkIIC serialled PZ865, which still flies today with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight) was completed here on 15 September 1944 and named 'Last of The Many' in a special ceremony. So, what happened to it? The airfield effectively ceased all operations in 1958, but it was not the end of its association with the Hawker company. In 1959, Hawker Siddeley Nuclear Power Company took over the four large flight sheds and installed a complete nuclear submarine reactor test facility; which was relocated to Greenwich in 1961. The Ford Motor Company opened a commercial vehicle component factory at Langley Airfield in 1949, and then bought the entire site from Hawker Siddeley in 1959. The former aircraft factory was re-used for commercial vehicle manufacture and the Ford Transit was built here until production was transferred to Ford's Southampton plant at Swaythling, Southampton, and later the Ford Cargo. The Langley factory became part of Iveco in 1986 but finally closed in September 1997, before being demolished a year later, with the full support of the council, in spite of its status as a World Heritage Site (there’s a recurring pattern forming here, isn’t there?).Now, it’s all gone; a playground, horse field and residential open space is all that remains of the runway area. The house that was used as the test pilots’ mess is now a derelict residential property. A weed covered section of the original repair shed access road now lies in the grounds of a local golf course, as does a one-piece steel hanger door upright complete with hanging attachments. And finally, a large moss-covered concrete pad and rubble remains next to a field where the gliding school used to be.They COULD have, at the very least, raised a sculpture or a model in Slough; but they didn’t. Instead, a long awaited full-size replica of a Battle of Britain Fighter aircraft was erected over in Windsor instead, near the town's popular Alexandra Gardens; since the designer of the plane, Sir Sydney Camm, happened to have been born there instead, and to have commuted to work in Slough from there. The Hawker Hurricane replica was unveiled on the Thames promenade on Friday 20th July 2012, with the cost of the memorial, which had been in planning since 2006, having been funded by developer contributions through the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead. Slough Borough Council, though? Well, they’d been asked to contribute as well, with the offer of using the Langley M4 J5 Roundabout as an alternate location instead, or alternately at the residential property which used to serve as the test pilots’ mess, in an ambitious proposal to restore the derelict building and inaugurate it as a museum.Of course, being Slough Borough Council, they refused to contribute a penny, or have any involvement in the development- Both on account of an under-the-table agreement with Honda, whose UK Head Office is situated in an office building immediately adjacent to the roundabout, and who ‘sponsor’ the roundabout themselves, using it as free advertisement space to exclusively promote itself instead. And of account of the council having no interest whatsoever in spurring any development in Slough whatsoever, besides an endless over-abundance of shoddily-constructed, faceless, anonymous, eternally vacant office buildings. So Windsor, which already had so many other tourist attractions and cultural heritage sites, got this:And Langley, in Slough, yet again, surprise surprise, got yet ANOTHER perpetually unoccupied, drab and nondescript office building (yes, there’s a good reason why ‘The Office’ was set in Slough, and it wasn’t just the Trading Estate- Slough Borough Council really is, and since the days Betjeman lamented their short-sightedness in his infamous poem, has always been, JUST THAT obsessed with office developments at the detriment of absolutely everything else) called Hurricane House. Though at least with that, they gave up on the hopeless ‘Office HQ’ angle sooner rather than later, changed its name to ‘Hurricane Court’, and repurposed and subdivided the building into a bunch of studio flats:Oh, and after the fall of Poland in WW2, the Polish head of state, General Sikorski, escaped to Britain, and stayed in Iver Lodge, from which he ran the Polish government-in-exile for a significant period of time. Some of the Polish army also escaped, and set up a camp at Langley House and Park for the remainder of the war, with Langley House serving not only as the South-East Regional Headquarters of the Home Guard, but as the Headquarters for the Polish Units preparing for D-Day, who launched their operations on D-Day from here.Unfortunately, though, the evacuated Polish army also saw fit to use the Langley Park as their own private firing range, and its historic landmarks and monuments as targets for firing practice. The Harvey Memorial Tower, a 50ft high viewing tower which offered fine views to Windsor Castle, was constructed in 1860, by the First Baron of Langley Park, Sir Robert Bateson Harvey; and was the centerpiece of the formal rhododendron gardens which had then been planted around it in the early 20th century, by his son Sir Robert Grenville Harvey. However, the Polish army-in-exile didn’t give a crap about any of that, and practised shooting mortars at the monument in Langley Park (and indeed, unfired and unexploded mortars, along other ammunition can still be found in abundance, dumped in the boggy ditches and ponds all around Langley Park. After the war came to an end, Buckinghamshire County Council (NOT Slough Borough Council) bought Langley Park; and because it was structurally unsafe, the Harvey Memorial Tower had to be subsequently demolished in 1959. By which stage, the opportunity had long passed, and the Polish War Memorial had been erected in Northolt instead. Proposals were still presented to place another Polish War Memorial here, on the site of the destroyed Harvey Memorial Tower, and these calls to erect a new Polish War Memorial on the still empty plinth have increased over the past two decades, with the rapid upsurge in the size of the Polish immigrant community in Slough due to freedom of movement from the EU. And hey, you never know- since it’s Buckinghamshire County Council, instead of Slough Borough Council, maybe it might still happen. But I’m not holding my breath. Slough’s administration is a laughing stock, for good reason.UPDATE: BTW, a few more recent updates, where I’ll let the series of newspaper articles, in chronological order, do most of the job of presenting the state of affairs:Regarding Slough’s last remaining historical landmark of any note, with the exception of the Slough Trading Estate itself (where all of the historical original buildings have already been demolished a long time ago), the original 1908 Horlicks factory- with Horlicks accounting for 85% of GSK’s current revenue in India, currently being the most widely consumed packaged beverage in India after bottled water, and with the historical Punjabi community of Slough having been largely responsible for this, due largely to the Punjabi soldiers of British Indian Army who first brought it back from here to India with them, and their descendants who worked at the Slough factory having led the drive to build new factories in both Indian and Pakistani Punjab in the 1960s:GSK announces plans to close Slough's Horlicks factoryCalls for Horlicks building to be listed rejectedREVEALED: New plans for Horlicks Factory site developmentCouncillors quiz developer over lack of parking at Horlicks factory siteOld Horlicks factory homes plan approvedHorlicks development deal will pump over £5 million into Slough regeneration planAnd now, even the A4, aka as the Bath Road and Great Western Road, one of the largest and most important historical transport routes in the British Isles, and the road corridor around which Slough formed. Which the council has gone out of the way to render unfit for purpose during the lockdown period, by reducing to a single lane (from a dual carriageway, having already been reduced from the three lanes which it used to have previously c.10yrs ago, when the prexisting bus and cycle lanes were filled in to ‘widen the pavements’- on a road section which runs directly parallel to the fully pedestrianized Slough High Street for its entire length, no more than 50m walk away at any juncture, in the youngest and fastest growing urban centre in the UK, with a population of c.150k, and the highest rate of car ownership in South East England. At a time when Crossrail’s extension here’s been postponed yet again due to COVID-19, and won’t be here until mid-2023 at the earliest, more than five years later than it was originally supposed to), in a move seemingly designed solely to finally bankrupt the town, and complete the job of killing off our already near-dead High Street, along with all of all local businesses once and for all:Angry drivers launch petition against 'money-making' bus laneRow over changes to controversial A4 bus lane in Slough (with the article failing to mention the notable piece of information that the new bus lane, as with all bus lanes in Slough, can also still be used freely by the members of Slough Borough Council themselves, and their own registered personal vehicles)Slough Tories call for leading councillor's resignation over bus lane 'chaos'"OUR TRADE WILL BE FINISHED IN SIX MONTHS" WARNS SLOUGH TAXI FEDERATIONPLEASE SIGN THE NEW OFFICIAL PETITION (”3 AUG 2020- Slough Borough Council have said that they will not take any notice of it and so instead a short while ago, a new petition was created on SBC's website.”)Abolish the Bath Road Bus Lane (“This ePetition ran from 06/07/2020 to 03/08/2020 and has now finished. 5272 people signed this ePetition (before SBC shut it down, only a few hours after it was created).” Meanwhile, here’s their list of currently active e-petitions, all created and signed exclusively by members of the council themselves, with all others shut down on the same day as a matter of course: Petitions)Temporary A4 Bus Lane Scheme (clarifying that the ‘temporary scheme’, which was initially launched with the assertion that it’d only be until October, and then got extended to ‘six months’, will now be in place, no matter how much public opposition there is to the scheme, for at least the next ‘eighteen months’. Which, since it’s SBC we’re talking about here, we all know full well means everyone in this town knows full well means ‘Forever’).And people wonder why we sing:“Come friendly bombs and fall on Slough! It isn't fit for humans now,There isn't grass to graze a cow.Swarm over, Death!Come, bombs and blow to smithereensThose air -conditioned, bright canteens,Tinned fruit, tinned meat, tinned milk, tinned beans,Tinned minds, tinned breath.Mess up the mess they call a town-A house for ninety-seven downAnd once a week a half a crownFor twenty years. And get that man with double chin(FYI, here’s a picture of James Swindlehurst, a couple of years back, after he attended a attended the MIPIM show in Cannes, south of France, in March, thanks to the donations of parties *supposedly* unknown to him, telling the council meeting that the council knew itself who the blind donors were- Morgan Sindall- but since he *totally* didn’t, he asserted that he couldn’t be accused of being influenced by them concerning business matters, and that was the end of it…)Who'll always cheat and always win,Who washes his repulsive skinIn women's tears:And smash his desk of polished oakAnd smash his hands so used to strokeAnd stop his boring dirty jokeAnd make him yell. But spare the bald young clerks who addThe profits of the stinking cad; It's not their fault that they are mad,They've tasted Hell. It's not their fault they do not knowThe birdsong from the radio,It's not their fault they often goTo MaidenheadAnd talk of sport and makes of carsIn various bogus-Tudor barsAnd daren't look up and see the starsBut belch instead. In labour-saving homes, with careTheir wives frizz out peroxide hairAnd dry it in synthetic airAnd paint their nails.Come, friendly bombs and fall on SloughTo get it ready for the plough. The cabbages are coming now;The earth exhales.”
