Queue !I like things crisp and to the point. I hate to read articles (or even sentences) with a lot of redundancy.The word Queue is the cornucopia of redundancy.If it was supposed to sound like ‘Kiu’, the perfect spelling would have been ‘Q’. I could live with a spelling like ‘Que’. But why on earth would someone add two pairs of ‘ue’ at the end of ‘Q’ in order to make it sound like ‘Q’ ?Who is pronouncing those unnecessary ‘ue’-s ?P.S.-Mathematically speaking, 80% of Queue (the spelling) is ‘redundant’.

The scary thing is that Jyutping is only as widely used as the other major romanization systems. Anyone who has looked into Cantonese romanization will tell you that it’s one chaotic mess of a situation, because the three major systems—Yale, Jyutping, and Cantonese Pinyin—are all equally well established.Jyutping: Developed by the Linguistic Society of HK, it is one of the most widely used systems.Cantonese Pinyin: Officially speaking, the only system that the EDB and HKEAA recognize.Yale romanization of Cantonese: It is widely used in books and dictionaries in the West. Although Yale is slowly fading in popularity in Hong Kong, it still is one of the most popular choices.Hong Kong Government Cantonese Romanization (HKGCR): Adopted by the government of HK in place names.Macau Government Cantonese Romanization: Like the name suggests, it's used by the government of Macau.Guangdong Romanization: Adopted by the Guangdong Provincial Education Department in Cantonese transcription.Standard Romanization: Although not the most popular system, it is still used by several Christian institutions and organizations.S. L. Wong: Used in a few linguistic publications.Sidney Lau: Lau’s system is now being phased out by Jyutping. However, it used to be a popular choice among learners of Cantonese.Barnett–Chao: An obsolete system that uses tonal spelling like Gwoyeu Romatzyh.New-French Latinization: Late to the party, but it has arrived. New-French is a new addition to the family, because the more the merrier, right?But seriously, I think I like this system best, because it is flexible enough to transcribe different Cantonese dialects/accents.EDITSpeaking of which, I forgot to mention that was just a simplified overview of the situation. The full story is that there are variations even within the HKGCR system. And despite its adoption by the HK government departments in practice, HKGCR has neither name nor status at the official level. Although it’s sometimes referred to as Eitel/Dyer-Ball romanization, they are not exactly the same thing. The Eitel/Dyer-Ball romanization scheme was adopted by the HK government in 1960 to romanize place names in Hong Kong, which then set the basis for the so called HKGCR system (not an official name). HKGCR differs from Eitel/Dyer in that it lacks consistency, because it is really a mixture of several other systems and wild spellings. I suppose to better describe it, HKGCR is like a confederation of romanizations.Historical spelling (not an inconsistency)The HKGCR system makes a distinction between /t͡s s/ and /t͡ʃ ʃ/ in spelling that reflects the historical phonology of Cantonese.
