In theory, Trump should have allies in the Senate serving as his defense, and antagonists serving as the prosecution while the other 90 Senators sit as impartial jury.It’s a theory so laughable that I am astonished the Constitution was written that way in the first place, but there we are. The Founders knew that the Supreme Court would probably be too beholden to the President, since they are appointed by said President but they believed that Senators and Representatives in the House would be more motivated by the power of the Congress rather than their personal power or the power of the party. In practice, basically none of them care about whether Congress has the power of dried spit. They care about the overall power of the party to which they have pledged allegiance, and that seems to go for both parties.

I would prefer not to abolish the Senate, since a bicameral legislature can be quite useful.Two possibilities exist:Keep the Senate at 2 senators per state no matter how small or large the state but reduce Federal power so that it doesn’t matter so much.Change something about either the Senate or the states.Combining / splitting states to make them more equal (ONE Dakota, who needs two Dakotas? 3 or four Californian states, etc.)Make the Senate balance some other “injustice” now that the “injustice” of Free States having more power than Slave States is (seriously) not an issue (shouldn’t be an issue anyway).I would love to see the Senate be 100 people, but selected only by party. So I vote for my personal representative who is a person that I voted for. I vote for President but that is again a person I am voting for. Then I pick my preferred party for Senate which might be Libertarian, or Green, or Liberal Democrat or whatever. Each whole percentage point picks a Senator. Of course we don’t actually get to 100 that way, some years it’d be 99, some it would be 98, or lower. But that’s ok, since we’re correcting the injustice of Democrats and Republicans dominating the conversation with the same nonsense we’ve already heard 1000 already. Let’s create a way for the other parties to actually be represented.We could leave the Senate’s powers otherwise unchanged — they’d still be the ones to ratify treaties, confirm appointments and try the President if they get impeached. The Senate’s role as the “higher” chamber means that we don’t want it to be the one that has 438 members who are representing individual precincts. We want it to be the one balancing whatever is the most grave injustice that would otherwise be present in government.To continue to pretend that the most grave injustice is that Wyoming doesn’t have 25 representatives but California does is to do serious disservice to what’s actually happening to real people in the USA.Of course, option 1 also works. Then Wyoming can do whatever it likes since it won’t be so completely controlled by whatever Washington D.C. wants, but so can California.

Lots and lots of jail. I was once appointed to cross-examine certain witnesses for a self -represented accused. He had good defences, but he wouldn't listen to legal advice and he wouldn't shut up. He also wasn't aware of the legal defences available to him and didn't run them. He was accordingly convicted and did a lot of time in prison.A person doesn't do his own surgery, so why run your own trial?
