PDF Editor FAQ

What are the real-world origins of Star Wars character names?

Padmé (which is actually grammatically incorrect; the Earth name is Padma, meaning “lotus”) comes from the Buddhist mantra “om mani padme hum,” which is literally translated — to the extent that translation helps anything — as “om, jewel in the lotus, hum.”A dagoba, like a stupa, is a reliquary for the bones of a particularly revered Buddhist monk of high status.Owen is just as much of a real-world name as Luke. So is Ezra, the kid from Rebels. Indeed, so is Finn, derived on our planet from the Old Irish name Fionn (as in Fionn MacCumhaill, the mythic hero whose name is often Anglicized as “Finn McCool” — there is a member of Max Rebo’s band in Jabba’s palace who looks like a tube of biscuit dough wearing shorts and plays a clarinet thing who is named “Droopy McCool,” although you wouldn’t know that from the movies). Of course, Poe was that mopey guy who wrote “The Raven.”Dooku (stupidly pronounced “dew-koo” and therefore sounding vaguely scatological) comes from the Japanese word for poison, which is actually pronounced more like “doh-ku” (or the last two syllables of “sudoku”). But you know, George Lucas, Californian accent, what are you gonna do? (Doubling a vowel is one way to indicate, when spelling a Japanese word in Roman letters, that the vowel is the long version.)L3–37 from Solo is turn-of-the-millennium leet-spelling for “leet” = “elite.” Qi’ra from the same movie is pronounced like the real-world name “Ciara.” There’s a Val (although so-called “Word of God” tells us that her name is an alias, shortened from the in-universe musical instrument “valachord”). Rio is of course Spanish for “River,” and “Durant,” his surname, is found on Earth. Tobias Beckett would work fine as an Earth name. John Dryden was an English poet. People named “Orlando” sometimes shorten this to Lando. “Calrissian” is constructed like Armenian names, with the “-ian” suffix more or less meaning “son of,” although I don’t know if it’s a real one.Ashoka (not “Ahsoka” in the real world) was a king who brought Buddhism to the masses. If you’re sensing that Lucas probably has a mild obsession with Eastern religion, you probably aren’t wrong. The name of the planet Mortis is Latin for “death” — technically “of death,” as in, for one example, rigor mortis, the stiffening of the body after death.Tyrannus, Dooku’s Sith name, is Latin, from the same root as “tyrant” and Tyrannosaurus. This isn’t a name, but when C3PO is negotiating with the eyeball droid outside Jabba’s palace to gain entry, part of his Huttese dialogue sounds like “Che mishka Jabba du Hutt?” This is actual, albeit phonetically spelled, Polish for “Does Jabba the Hutt live here?” Likewise, Nien Nunb utters all of his dialogue in a Kenyan dialect. His lines make perfect sense if you know that language. Kenyan audiences were thrilled, and the actor who voiced the character became a big hero over there. And back to the original movie: whatever language Greedo speaks — there is some debate over whether it’s Huttese or his native Rodian — is based on the sounds of the Quechua language of native Peruvians. Sound designer Ben Burtt says that, alarmingly, a Quechua speaker came up to him after a screening and told him that at one point, what Greedo actually says to Han is “I love your big blue eyes”! The sounds of the Ewok language are based on Tibetan, although I don’t think they carried over any entire words.

Why do people still use Microsoft Excel instead of Google Sheets?

I have used MS Office since it first came out in 1990 (?) and basically made my living out of it in the Finance Department of large Telecomms companies as an "unqualified" person. Prior to that Lotus 123 and DBase.Using VBA I can use it to programme practically any type of application with it. I have programmed a game. I have written a programme that solves Sudoku puzzles. Visual Basic and VBA have really superior debugging features. Anybody tried to use HTML ? I had to for my web site, and it is a real pain.Even though VBA has not changed much, I have had to keep upgrading because people I used to work with upgraded and I needed to be able to read their files.

I purchased dr.fone (which is a product of CocoDoc) and the software couldn't fix my phone. Sent an email to customer service more than a month ago, still no reply. Well, now that they have my money, they don't care anymore, obviously!
