Depends on the labor laws in your country and the work agreement/contract you have with the employers. What does your contract say?Generally speaking most bosses I have worked for usually understand the odd one day off for being sick but two days in a row required a sick sheet signed by a doctor. Most times it wasn’t even up to the boss. Boss was bound by some law to do so.Having said all that and if you’re still reading this then what you really want to know is, is boss out to get me? And more importantly what do I do?First thoughts, yeah asking for a sick sheet for one day does sound off.What are the possibilities?Could be a stickler for detail …. in which case, boss ain’t out to get you -good news, if you have a good reason. Write it in a letter and give it to boss.Could be out to get you. Bad news. In which case figure out why, fast. Plan how this could be better.Boss is having a bad day, does this happen often?Boss is usually tough on everyone and is asking me the same as any staff.Which of the above are the most likely? Only you can answer this accurately. Measure the one you reckon is the case against sound background info you know. Is boss nice or not? Asks everyone for a sick sheet for one day off? I have no doubt that people get sea-sick on a destroyer.Destroyers take some pretty hard rolls and pitches.Carriers, though? They’re so big that no one would ever get seasick on them, right? Must be pretty resistant to such things?Nope.Aircraft carrier sailors can still get sea-sick. This usually only lasts the first few days of a deployment for most sailors who do get sea-sick, and I would say that only a few do experience sea-sickness.Occasionally carriers must go through rough waters. I often saw this during pulling into and out of ports. Most of the time, as fast as a Nimitz-class carrier is, with being able to pull some pretty high speeds for a longer duration than most, you can just avoid storms altogether, but sometimes you’ve just got to go through rougher weather or seastate.I recall one time on watch, down pretty much at the waterline, where the effect was the least, and I was having to take a step towards and away from a panel I was taking logs on with each roll, and not small steps, either. Alarms were coming in and clearing as tanks were sloshing and I just had to stand there, constantly cutting the alarms in and out.It can get pretty bad at times. Once you get used to it, it’s almost a challenge to see if you can fake out other sailors by walking as if nothing odd is happening while they are making curved paths through the passageways.But that is some of the best sleep you will ever get. Now, our racks in the Navy weren’t the greatest by any means. They were a six inch slab of fire resistant something approximating a bed, laying on a steel sheet. Some people added mattress pads, and that helped. But whenever the ocean started rocking, it would put you straight to sleep. We had people playing video games in our berthing almost non-stop, but when the seas started picking up, people would change their schedule just to nab that extra-restful sleep.As for larger ships, the one time I was on a cruise there were still people getting seasick. I doubt there is a ship large enough to prevent this from happening.
