PDF Editor FAQ

Can your boss ask for a sick note if you only miss one day of work?

Depends on the labor laws in your country and the work agreement/contract you have with the employers. What does your contract say?Generally speaking most bosses I have worked for usually understand the odd one day off for being sick but two days in a row required a sick sheet signed by a doctor. Most times it wasn’t even up to the boss. Boss was bound by some law to do so.Having said all that and if you’re still reading this then what you really want to know is, is boss out to get me? And more importantly what do I do?First thoughts, yeah asking for a sick sheet for one day does sound off. What are the possibilities?Could be a stickler for detail …. in which case, boss ain’t out to get you -good news, if you have a good reason. Write it in a letter and give it to boss.Could be out to get you. Bad news. In which case figure out why, fast. Plan how this could be better.Boss is having a bad day, does this happen often?Boss is usually tough on everyone and is asking me the same as any staff.Which of the above are the most likely? Only you can answer this accurately. Measure the one you reckon is the case against sound background info you know. Is boss nice or not? Asks everyone for a sick sheet for one day off? Any other priors that may help you come to the most likely reason.TL DRA visual guide to Bayesian thinkingI may have it wrong but hope it helps. If boss insists on a sick sheet go to the doctor, explain that you need a sick sheet. If doctor doesn’t give you a sick sheet because you are there after the fact take this message to boss and explain how you’ve learnt your lesson and will know what to do next time.

What is the world's toughest tongue twister?

"Pinky and the Brain" season 1, episode 48, entitled "You Said a Mouseful", originally aired 14 November 1997, written by Gordon Bressack:*Video has been cut shorter than what was actually aired. Full aired dialogue below. Try reading it while the video's playing.Kurt Sackett: I am honoured by your visit. Let me show you our assembly line. First, sheets of sheer synthetic sheepskin are slit into several Kicky-Sack shoe shapes in shapely shoe sizes by six sitting sheet slitters.Brain: I only see five sitting sheet slitters.Kurt Sackett: The sixth sitting sheet slitter's sick. His son Sammy's subbing 'til the sick sixth sitting sheet slitter's back, sitting pretty.Pinky: You're not the sheet slitter?Sammy: No, I'm the sheet slitter's son.Pinky: Well.... You keep on slitting sheets until the sheet slitter comes. Haheheheh! Whooohaaah.[View of a machine labelled "Sheet Slitter Shoe Shaper".]Kurt Sackett: The Shoe Shaper then shapes the slit synthetic sheepskin sheets, and shoots out shoes through the chute.Kurt Sackett: Now, this is Mr. Plunkett, the new khaki sock plucker. (I had to fire our previous sock plucker. He had a bit of an attitude.)Brain: So, you sacked the cocky khaki Kicky-Sack sock plucker?Kurt Sackett: The second cocky khaki Kicky-Sack sock plucker I sacked since the sixth sitting sheet slitter got sick.[Lights dim. Machine whirs and slows down.]Kurt Sackett: Whoops! Don't worry; just an electrical problem. One of the Kicky-Sack sack pickers will have to flick the plug.Pinky: Not the khaki sock plucker?Kurt Sackett: Oh, my, no! The Kicky-Sack sack pickers flick the plug. The khaki sock plucker can't reach the socket over the latex child perambulator fenders we use to line the treadmill.Brain: It might make more sense to have the sixth sitting sheet slitter's son flick the plug, if the sack pickers and the sock pluckers are behind the rubber baby buggy bumpers.[Sammy flicks the plug. Everything whirs back up.]Kurt Sackett: I never thought of that!Brain: Of course, you didn't.Sack Picker #1: That is one smart fellow! He felt smart![Pinky bounces past on the conveyor belt, inside a Kicky-Sack shoe.]Pinky: Whaahhahah! Zart!Sack Picker #2: Two smart fellows! They felt smart![View of a toy boat mounted on the wall. Plaque below it says "1st Prize. Hackensack Socko Kicky-Sack Sack Kicker Khaki Sock Factory Room Annual Picnic."]Brain: And what, pray tell, is this?Kurt Sackett: Oh, this is the toy boat I won in the sack race at the Hackensack Socko Kicky-Sack Sack Kicker Khaki Sock Factory picnic in Secaucus.[The move further down the conveyor-belt line.]Kurt Sackett: And finally, the Socko Kicky-Sack Sack Kickers are inflated by our genuine Parker Packard pewter pressure pump.Pinky: Look, Brain! I mean, Mr., um, Turkey-Lurky. It's purple!Brain: I'm Kawasaki, Pinky. You're Turkey-Lurky.Pinky: Well, I don't think that's a very nice thing to say about a person.[Brain grabs Pinky by the snout, stifles him.]Brain: I've seen all I need to see of the Hackensack Socko Kicky-Sack SackKicker Factory. [To Pinky:] Pinky, we must take our leave, and sneakback under cover of nightfall. [They walk into a large pair of shoes.]Both: Pe-fwoooah.[They fall, breath knocked out of them. They look up, and up, and up,at the unsmiling face of the factory guard.]Kurt Sackett: I see you've met the Hackensack Socko Kicky-Sack Sack Kicker Factory's security specialist, Peggy Babcock. No one gets past her.Brain: Peggy Babcock... Peggy Babcock... Peggy Babcock. Why does that name sound familiar?[She picks them up, raises them to in front of her unfriendly face.]Pinky: Oh, I think I know! Peggy picked a peck of pickled peppers.[Peggy growls. Dissolve to Acme Labs, night.]Brain: This is it, Pinky.Pinky: Our supper, Brain?Brain: No, Pinky. This pea contains a single helium element. Once this pea is added to the Hackensack Socko Kicky-Sack Sack Kicker Factory assembly line, every Socko Kicky-Sack Sack Kicker will fill with helium the first time it is inflated. Now, Pinky, here is the plan. Remember, every step must be performed with precision! You must slit the sixth sick sheet slitter's son's sheet, secure it next to the toy boat from the Hackensack Socko Kicky-Sack Sack Kickers' picnic in Secaucus, stretch it past the sack pickers' station and the sock plucker's chute, and pick a sack, pluck a sock, and flick the plug, so I can put the pea in the plucked sock with the picked sack for ballast and bounce it off the rubber baby buggy bumper, into the Parker Packard purple pewter pressure pump. Is that understood?Pinky: I understood "Now", and "Pinky".

In the open ocean, how small does a ship need to be before sea sickness becomes an issue for some people? Has anyone ever gotten sea sick on an aircraft carrier or a destroyer?

I have no doubt that people get sea-sick on a destroyer.Destroyers take some pretty hard rolls and pitches.Carriers, though? They’re so big that no one would ever get seasick on them, right? Must be pretty resistant to such things?Nope.Aircraft carrier sailors can still get sea-sick. This usually only lasts the first few days of a deployment for most sailors who do get sea-sick, and I would say that only a few do experience sea-sickness.Occasionally carriers must go through rough waters. I often saw this during pulling into and out of ports. Most of the time, as fast as a Nimitz-class carrier is, with being able to pull some pretty high speeds for a longer duration than most, you can just avoid storms altogether, but sometimes you’ve just got to go through rougher weather or seastate.I recall one time on watch, down pretty much at the waterline, where the effect was the least, and I was having to take a step towards and away from a panel I was taking logs on with each roll, and not small steps, either. Alarms were coming in and clearing as tanks were sloshing and I just had to stand there, constantly cutting the alarms in and out.It can get pretty bad at times. Once you get used to it, it’s almost a challenge to see if you can fake out other sailors by walking as if nothing odd is happening while they are making curved paths through the passageways. But that is some of the best sleep you will ever get. Now, our racks in the Navy weren’t the greatest by any means. They were a six inch slab of fire resistant something approximating a bed, laying on a steel sheet. Some people added mattress pads, and that helped. But whenever the ocean started rocking, it would put you straight to sleep. We had people playing video games in our berthing almost non-stop, but when the seas started picking up, people would change their schedule just to nab that extra-restful sleep. As for larger ships, the one time I was on a cruise there were still people getting seasick. I doubt there is a ship large enough to prevent this from happening.
