PDF Editor FAQ

Is it legal to hunt on private land if there is a public footpath that goes through it?

Welcome to Texas…Just because there is a Public Easment thru a property does not convey ANY rights to use the adjoining land IN ANY WAY without the EXPRESS PERMISSION of the Landowner….In example, just because a public road runs thru my land, the people who enjoy the shoemrt way onto town have no right to hunt, fish, camp, cut firewood, pick flowers, dig for worms, dump their trash or take a fekking crap on it without my permission without being subject to charges of Trespassing and being held liable for damages and restoration.

If you want firewood, is it legal to go cut a tree down from a wooded area on the side of the road?

The answer depends upon the country and area you live in. Most jurisdictions require a permit before you can chop trees. Permits are usually fairly cheap, and cutting/selling firewood isn’t a bad way to make money. However, you will also need to make sure that the trees are not on private or protected land. For example, some National Forests will allow personal logging, while zero National Parks will allow this.If you are in the US, check with the local US Forest Service to see what is required for logging/firewood gathering. They can also tell you where it is safe to do so.I would avoid cutting down trees on the side of the road. Usually these are on private land, and there is the possibility you will damage someone’s property (such as another car driving by). Just having that possibility can leave you open to litigation, so it is better to find trees designated for public use and safely cut them down.Hope this info helps!

Is it legal to sell firewood as long as you didn't cut it down?

It depends entirely where you are. On private land, it belongs to the land owner. In US National Parks they want deadfall, and branches that fall from trees to stay in place, to rot and rejuvenate the soil. The branches and tree trunks rotting on the ground also provide food for insects that are eaten by animals. You need to buy wood from near the park to have a fire, because of concerns that wood brought in from a distance might contain harmful bacteria, or parasites. On BLM land you can cut firewood, but you need to get a permit. I’m not 100% sure if a permit is needed to collect deadfall. You can camp on BLM land pretty well anywhere, and collecting wood for a few small fires isn’t an issue. If you started to load a truck like you wanted to heat your home for the winter it might be a different story.
