PDF Editor FAQ

Should I participate in a belt fight in my dorm? On Fridays, a few guys from my floor meet in the hall, take their shirts off and whip the s**t out of each other with leather belts. Whoever has the most red marks after 5 mins buys everyone dinner.

It is probably best in this situation to weigh the risk versus reward. My dorm floor freshman year was all pretty friendly, and had this game where the goal was to hold onto a rugby ball as long as possible. Your opponents would dog pile on top of you until the ball popped out, and then you would run with the ball, whoever got it, until you got tackled again. It was fun, and no one got too badly beaten up, but think about it from the other side: if someone had gotten injured, they, or their parents, might have sued the other person who injured them. (I know, I know, as a college kid, you are most likely 18, and in charge of your own affairs, but many times parents will still try to jump in, and the person may not tell their parents off strong enough if their parents do want to sue on their behalf.)So, if it is just a leather belt, and not the metal belt buckle side, it may not be too terribly high of a risk, so it might be okay. But then again, any waiver of liability is just implied by a personal honor code of all those involved, versus some actual written waiver, so if someone gets badly hurt, or otherwise their parents get involved and litigious, then you might get yourself into some serious trouble, and get expelled from college, or end up in jail or with a heavy debt to repay. This probably is a highly unlikely thing to happen, but it is something that could happen. Assuming you are all 18 though, you could totally write up a contract and waiver of liability for everyone involved, and at least have a little bit of protection in that regard. So then, the only risks are physical, like if someone’s belt breaks the skin on two people, there is a slight risk of passing blood borne illness from one to another. Or there is a risk of getting blinded in an eye if the belt ends up snapped in your face instead of on your skin. These are probably all fairly low likelihood events, so not things to be hugely worried about, but if you are worried about participating, these are things to weigh towards the “cons” side of the list.On the “pros” side, young men tend to build camaraderie by establishing a hierarchy of physical prowess through this type of competition, so it might be that the risk of getting a few welts and bruises allows a steam relief valve for otherwise stressed college students, where you can let out some anger or frustration towards your hall mates that have maybe gotten on your nerves in a way that isn’t seriously injurious, before it escalates to a fist fight in the dorm hallway over the guy who you told you really liked some girl, and then caught kissing her, or the room mate who is always around, and then follows you everywhere on campus, too. In that regard it can ease tensions. Plus, you will undoubtedly have some laughs with the other guys, and be seen as part of the group. But again, you have to weigh the pros versus the cons, and decide for yourself. If you want to find another less physical way to get a group of friends to compete, and reap some of the benefits of competition, Mario Kart 64 is a great option, where the top 2 players in a race get to continue to the next round, and the bottom 2 swap out for two others waiting to play. That, or Euchre. Only me and one or two other guys knew how to play Euchre starting out in the dorms, but by the end of the first semester, we would regularly have 30 or so people playing Euchre on a random Wednesday night. Not sure why we didn’t play poker or something else, other than that we were all broke and we played Euchre for bragging rights instead of money.

How long does it take for you to get your jobbed booked in the air force, like figure out what your job is and when your leave date is?

That can really vary somewhat and depend on a multitude of things some of which are beyond you and your recruiter’s control even. Take for instance when the budget and manning are being cut and how that could impact things. Then sometimes they are rightsizing and maybe discontinuing a job field like with telephone communications when they largely civilianized that some years back. Your test scores can also influence this and if you have particularly high ones then your recruiter might be holding you back somewhat to slot you for a job or job field that they are having trouble getting qualified recruits for. Also some schools for jobs are lengthy somewhat and they don’t run sessions as much or often. Then that can influence things and when they want you to enlist and go off to basic so that after graduating from that you are not sitting around idle so long in casual status waiting for your tech school to start. Also the enlist standards change somewhat depending on how much trouble a military service is having meeting its recruiting needs. That is probably not the case with the Air Force since they have more individuals trying to get in than they need or that are leaving in many job fields. However that situation could create delays for you then as well. Also if you are trying to get into a job field that is a popular and needed one then that could create delays somewhat. Perhaps there is even a need for a waiver for you based on past behavior and that could create hiccups and delays for you.The best thing for you to do is to stay in touch with your recruiter and ask questions and research the various jobs and job fields and what their duties consist of and how long the tech school is for them. Consider each job from both its good points as well as bad points because they all have some negative aspects to them somewhat. The trick is to get one that you like doing and that the good aspects outweigh the bad ones that you can live with while doing in the military. Some are also better for staying in (if you want to try and make a career of it) than others. Others give you some really good technical training that you can then get a decent job on the outside with and make a living at. DON’T just leave all this up to your recruiter to determine without your interest and input. By not keeping the lines of communication flowing and not taking an interest in things and doing a little light reading and research on your own and thinking about things you leave the door open for they to determine what could be a life altering, life changing decision for you. Some luck is also needed with all this as well and enlisting into the military is akin to buying a used car and playing poker all rolled together but you can help yourself somewhat by understanding things better and keeping in touch with your recruiter, doing well on your ASVAB and being informed and somewhat flexible about things.
