PDF Editor FAQ

As an RPG Player, the Deep Dive wonders: Did your DM incorporate something from your character’s background into the world he or she ran? Or did they change something based on feedback from you? If so, how did that change the game for you?

I am currently co-running a campaign that works almost entirely on this concept. My friends and I started playing when we were twelve years old. We have played through every stage of life. From when we could just play on breaks between classes back at school, to playing in between examinations and papers in college, to playing on the weekends while exchanging experiences of first jobs. Now? Some of us own our own businesses, or work demanding jobs. All of us are married, all of us have kids, and all of us have lives that demand much of our free time. So, playing a campaign with a consistent DM was just impossible. Out of the question, no way. One day, then, I came up with a suggestion:What if we play ONLY self contained stories? Nothing longer than 2 sessions (at most 3, and for extreme cases). Taking turns at the DM chair, according to who feels has a good idea for a fun adventure that week. Each of us makes as many characters as we want, all stories take place in the same world, and we are free to connect each story to the rest in as direct or as indirect a way as we want, taking from whatever else someone has already incorporated into the world, and building on it.And we ran with it.Two years strong now. Many characters have come and gone. Entire cities have been fought over, entire kingdoms have been saved from the brink of doom, and we have a particular party we call the B Party that is a lovable group of LOTR-type misfits that are always low level and serve as our comedic escape and relief for when we are all to tired for world saving shenanigans. The entire world is made on the back of what the rest has done, and it grows organically as we move along. Kind of like The Never-ending Story (in case you have not read this novel, the idea is that the protagonist has the power of stories, and whatever he comes up with within the magical world of Fantasia, exists from that very moment and has always existed since the beginning of time, which is a fun way of describing what a storyteller does when creating fiction). For example, in one adventure, I presented the party with the task of escorting an elvish princess to her wedding, to a kingdom in a far off island. I came up with an elvish kingdom to the north, a human kingdom off at sea, and a whole backstory about them both.Later, another player took the aftermath of said adventure, and the prince of the human kingdom became a mad king of sorts, bent on destruction and destroying the elvish kingdom. So, we played that. This led me to create an order of knights from the human kingdom, and then another player decided to make a counterpart to them, in the form of an elvish order of seafaring warriors from the elvish kingdom. Many player characters starting coming from both orders, for different adventures. The conclusion of the quest that sprung from one escort mission, gave way into a year long “campaign”, made up of MANY interconnected stories from both sides of the war, as well as from neutral sides, each one bringing in more and more elements to the world. After two years of this format, I can honestly say, I have absolutely NO interest of going back to a single thread campaign again. This is just the most fun I have ever had with Dungeons and Dragons.

If slavery was all over the world, was it the African Black that were the most enslaved? Why didn’t the African black enslave the rest of the world?

Back when the slave trade was legal, literally anyone could get enslaved. It's just that some nations had more degenerate tendencies than others and sold each other into slavery. For starters, most slaves were POWs. John Smith, for instance, was a mercenary in Italy before getting captured and sold as a slave in Russia. He escaped and made his way to England where he would join the crew that would found Jamestown. This was not unusual in Europe at the time, as soldiers were often paid in loot rather than sallaries. Although generally soldiers preferred to ransom aristocratic soldiers as noble families would pay better. It was also not uncommon for armies to hire pressgangs to scam/kidnap men to solve manpower shortages. These men were given grunt tasks like rowing ships as they were seen as exactly the cannon fodder they were.We associate Africa with slavery mostly because of the immense slave diaspora that formed over the years. This was due to systemic piracy that continues to be continent wide. Many instances of men fighting and killing over at matter of money equivalent to less than $20 have been reported in many areas over the years. In mining regions it is remarks that trade routes are the frequent site of muggings as it is easier to steal minerals than to dig them up. This problem is extensive enough that Swahili seafarers (who liked to call themselves Arabs) found an extensive export business of human cargo. POWs and criminal convicts were the most common type of slaves but many African kings would go to war for the express purpose of looting and enslavement. This is how ethnic African enclaves formed as far afield as deep inside India, where they exist to this day.Fast forward to the colonization of the new world: There were acute manpower shortages in these remote colonies. This lead to a high ratio of indentured servants in many areas, who were contract workers who worked for a given number of years for a lump payment at the end (often in the form of a small amount of land). The employers had all the power in these arrangements, thus many abuses persisted unchecked like what was also seen in slavery. Unlike slavery, indentured servitude was not inherited and employers were each obliged to pay up in the end. The majority of indentured servants in the New Old were the urban poor of Europe who lacked the funds for a boat trip across the pond to start a new life. However, some Africans were also indentured servants, to include one in Massachusetts that would introduce voodooism to some young and impressionable teens. This was the start of the Salem Witch Trials as the discovery of such practices set off quite the panic. But also note there were always free blacks in the New World. This era was also the height of piracy in the Atlantic. On the lawless oceans mafia organizations would board and seize cargo at gunpoint only to immediately sell said cargo to smugglers who wouldn't ask where it came from. These sailors were equally unscrupulous about human cargo.Europe at the time was also no coarse backwater during this time. Their education and economic systems were advanced enough to produce large corporations, stock markets, skilled gunsmithing, ocean going ships, and elaborate banks all with the limited tech and literacy rates of the day. Europeans were poor, especially by modern standards, but was an fully cash based society. This was the Europe that established trade routes throughout the African coast, where subsistence living was the norm consisting of people living in mud huts and poking their cattle with sticks (literally). All these conditions combined produced the Atlantic Slave Trade. European seadogs would buy slaves where they were dirt cheap and move them to where labor was expensive. This was so profitable that specialized ships existed for it and it wasn't uncommon for gaps in shipping quotas to be met with kidnapping. African kings rose with the slave trade, exchanging people for weapons that could be used to endlave more people. A negative feedback loop had formed, until London officially banned the practice much later. So why didn't African's enslave the whole world? They were too busy robbing each other, and too degenerative to compete with exotic and advanced nations.
