PDF Editor FAQ

Is Coney Island the next on the list for gentrification?

not likely, the bulk of the housing in the area is either high rise public housing or the huge mitchell lama project, trump village.at the very west end of coney island is a private gated community, sea gate, most residents there are affluent hasidic jews.

Does NYC have good rent control?

well, for the time being it does. you can even pass a rent-controlled apartment onto family members. landlords, in order to maximize their profits, have tried to get rid of those on rent-control via not providing heat, hot water, repairs to an older building. the city is so backed up that it takes them months to respond to housing complaints such as these, if they even do this at all. the mitchell-lama projects, westbeth, or manhattan towers on west 42nd have not put in any new buildings resembling them in like 50 years or so. finding a rent-controlled or rent stablized apt. is very time consuming. some folk sign up for the NYC housing projects or Section 8 and wait 20 years. if you want something immediately, you would have to inquire in areas that are low income, such as the south bronx, east new york, brooklyn, washington heights or inwood-east of broadway preferably, or in some city well north of new york city, such as troy, monticello, or syracuse. get onto the housing lists. you never know, that is, if you’re adventurous enough to live in such an atmosphere. otherwise, move to jersey city or new rochelle.

Was The Bronx really scary and tough in the '80s as the British news claimed?

The late 70’s and 80's were certainly not the best period in NYC. Crime was much higher than it is today. Graffiti was everywhere.I lived in the Soundview section of the Bronx during that period with my wife and young son. This area was mostly Hispanic with some blacks. There were very few white people.Somehow we lived there and nothing ever happened to us. While this wasn't the worst part of the Bronx it was far from the best.Remember that this was the period that the South Bronx burned. We lived on the 12th floor and could see fires frequently on the other side of the Bronx River. The 6 story brick apartment houses could burn many times.I don't miss that period at all.Edit: (9/5/20) I lived in a Mitchell Lama Co-Op on Bruckner Blvd. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor lived in a NYC Project not to far away, also on Buckner Blvd.
