These are fighter versions of the T-38 Talon, which the US air force used to train its fighter pilots before they fly supersonic frontline fighters. They were lightweight and had fewer parts and were far easier to maintain compared to its contemporaries of the 1960s. In the air, they were highly maneuverable and were excellent dogfighters in within-visual-range(WVR) combat. Later versions, the F-5E had a radar and could be armed with longer range missiles such as the Sparrow as well as heat-seeking missiles such as the sidewinder.Other than smaller air forces, the F-5s were flown by air combat instructors as Aggressor aircraft at Red Flag of the US Air Force and the Navy’s Top Gun schools. In the hands of the best pilots, the F-5s frequently shot down far more expensive F-4’s, F-16’s, F-14’s and even F-15’s in mock combat.For the Korean air force, the ease of maintenance meant that we could keep high levels of readiness without spending too much money. So these planes not only defended our skies but also helped us build an aeronautics industry.The design elegance of these fighters was not by coincidence. The effort to design and develop this fighter was lead by Edgar Schmued, a Northrop senior vice president who had been the chief engineer for the P-51 Mustang and F-86 Saber - both of which were excellent fighters by any measure. Schumed sought to use state of the art technology to make a fighter that was easier to maintain on the front lines as well as perform well in combat. For countries like Korea, these small fighters accomplished much, and must have seemed “pleasingly ingenious and simple.”
