Protecting your family and your financial stability in order to prove you did nothing wrong, is not the same as having something to hide.Case in point (true story)Child is in a small daycare. Mother comes to pick her up at the end of the day and finds blood soaking down the back of her head and child has a split lip. Daycare staff say she fell off the monkey bars and split her lip but didn’t notice the head gash. Mom takes child to ER and has 5 staples put into her head.Next day, Mom let’s director of daycare know that child had to go to ER and that the staff had not noticed the head gash. Requests accident report.Mom is told she will get the accident report “as soon as it’s finished.” Mom has worked in a daycare previously and knows that accident reports are filed immediately. Accidents that require medical attention are reported to the state, immediately. But child has verified she fell from the monkey bars, so not a big concern. Just want documentation.Several days go by and no word from daycare regarding accident report. Mom calls licensing to find out if one has been filed. No report has been filed.Week later, Mom gets call from CPS. Assuming it was regarding accident report, she discusses the lack of documentation with the caller. Caller is confused. Says Mom has been reported on suspicion of abuse for pushing her child into a fireplace at home.Caller can neither confirm not deny who made the call but it’s obvious.Child has been interviewed by CPS without parental permission and told not to tell Mom. Child has had trouble sleeping and experienced other issues related to stress since the interview. At least Mom knows now why she’s been having problems.. Interviewer said child told her “Mom pushed me into the fireplace.” Child has severe speech issues. Mom asks caller if she talked to child. Yes. ‘And if she told you “Mom pushed me into the fireplace”, would you have understood her?’ *Crickets*Mom is subjected to several interviews. She is threatened with losing her child unless she “tells the truth”. She misses several days of work. This is a single mother with no close in support. The stress was unimaginable.The thing is, the child HAD struck her head on the fireplace a few days before the daycare incident. Fortunately, a friend was there and saw the whole thing. Also, Mom had taken the child to the next door neighbor, who was a nurse, after the child hit her head. She had also called the pediatrician’s help line. The child was fine but she wanted to make sure. It was all verified.Finally, the dreaded home visit. CPS worker came into the home, went through the entire house, verified food in the refrigerator and pantry, and interviewed Mom again.All allegations against Mom were found to be false. The daycare, however, was fined thousands of dollars for allowing children who were too young to be on the monkey bars, not having a soft landing place (chips, pea gravel, etc) under equipment from which a child might fall, failure to adequately supervise children on the playground, failure to file an accident report and, ironically, failure to report suspected abuse within 48 hours (took them a week because that’s when CPS investigated THEM).However, the loss of income, the stress, the fear for Mom was not addressed, nor can it ever be repaid. Any time a background check was filed for the next 8 YEARS, that report showed up, even though all allegations were false.Every time Mom volunteered to be a Girl Scout leader or assist in a classroom or supervise a field trip or chaperone a dance, up would pop that abuse allegation. All were found false but there’s always that suspicion. “Thanks but it turns out we have enough parents for xxxx”You can’t get your reputation back.So, while I understand the need for educators and medical professionals to be vigilante, there should be consequences for filing false allegations, no matter their intentions. The road to Hell is paved with good intentions.BTW, I personally know of another mother who was reported to CPS because her child had “Mongolian Spots”, which look like bruises.

From a legal standpoint, unless I give you permission to touch me you may not do so and if you do it anyway, you are committing a medical battery. Battery is an intentional tort, unlike negligence. Intentional torts are not covered by insurance.Thus , if I say, don’t revive or resuscitate me, you had damn well better do what I say.However, patients who are unconscious are deemed to have given you permission to touch and treat them unless they have a DNR order on file and known to you.In addition to being a lawyer, I used to be a Girl Scout Leader for which I had to take the Red Cross First Aid training. This was reinforced by the RN who trained us.The example given was of the distraught elderly wife draped over her husband who will not let any one do CPR, has the right , as spouse, to make that decision even when simple CPR will rescue him.Parents who withhold consent for medical treatment from their minor children ar subject to different standards in non-emergent situations that allows balancing a religious belief with the physical well being of the child, but there are ethics committees and sometimes court proceedings to address this.

What was your shortest tenure in a job before walking out and why?11 days. I spent just over a week working for the Vermont Youth Conservation Corps.It’s my fault really. I made one critical mistake. I thought the VYCC was the modern incarnation of FDR’s Civilian Conservation Corps. The guys that built trails and parks during the 1930s.It isn’t. It’s Upward Bound with manual labor. They take a bunch of fucked up city kids, truck them out to the boonies, hire a few local kids as examples, and try to straighten them out.None of this was part of the briefing. I was also a second call after another kid quit, so I missed basic week.So I show up, ready to work my ass off doing trail maintenance. I get shown around the camp. There’s a girls side and a boys side, with the mess tent in the middle. Note, that our unit leaders were Male, 21, and Female, 20, and a mated pair. I was 19. Then next oldest was 16 or 17.So after I got shown around, I moved the tent I’d been assigned and started digging a rain ditch. We’re supposed to be out here for a month. Female Leader gets upset. Why did I move the tent? It was pitched wrong. Why am I digging a ditch? Rain. Why didn’t I ask permission? Why should I?Then I was issued my work shirt. Heavy cotton twill, working on a mountainside, in the summer. And I’m not allowed to take it off. So I maintained the habit of keeping it tucked in and unbuttoned to my navel, and just pulling it off my shoulders to tie about my waist. I’d pull it back up if hikers or our leaders came by. Since I was never technically out of uniform, they couldn’t fire me.One evening, I decide I wanted a bit more than a shitty solar shower, so I went to take a bath in the stream near camp. Princess (I can’t remember her real name, spoiled little bitch from NYC), got lost going for water and ended up a bit too far downstream and saw me in all my glory. Apparently the sight of a naked half-submerged man traumatized her.At one point, I had a headache and took some Advil from my first aid kit. HOLY SHIT! You’d think I’d snorted coke. I’m not allowed to have unsecured medications, I need to turn it over to them, I’m not allowed to self-medicate. I’m 19 goddamn years old, you can have my Advil when you can take it from me.Our unit leaders were vegan, and since they supplied the food, that meant we were as well. Thank god I brought jerky, which they were NOT happy about. One night I’m on my second heaping plateful of straight tofu. Female Leader remarks that I must really like tofu. “No, Ma’am, this is the most disgusting thing I’ve ever put in my mouth.” “Then why are you eating so much?” “I’m that hungry.” I did the math when I got home. They were significantly underfeeding and watering everyone, and only the fact that I can forage, had brought gorp and jerky, and iodine for water, prevented me from being significantly underfed and dehydrated.We hiked at about a mile or more from basecamp to the worksite. Most people carried a shovel or pickaxe, besides water. I carried four rock bars, 15 pounds of steel apiece, because we fucking needed them and nobody else had the stones to lug them that far.Later, the unit is split in half, with the Leaders uptrail and six of us left to shore up a particular section of trail. We debated for two fucking hours what to do before I lost any semblance of patience. I’d missed basic week, so I hadn’t actually been trained on how to shore the trail, but I’d figured out one kid had a pretty solid understanding of how to do this. “You! What do we need to get this done?” He describes the sorts of rocks we needed to find.“You two, go find rocks. You two, bring them back here. You,” pointing at my SME, “and me are going to put them in place. Okay, get moving.”We got what had been, to that point, a day’s worth of work done with what remained of the morning. And Princess whined. I was mean, authoritarian, and sexist. I gave orders, I expected them to be followed, and I sent the two girls as my rock scouts. Well, we were doing fuckall until I got everyone moving, and I sent the girls to find rocks because they were the two smallest, weakest members of my team and weren’t really up to rolling boulders around through the woods. Yeah, we had those six foot long rock bars for a reason. If the two smallest people had been boys, I’d have sent them as scouts.But the crowning moment of suck, was when princess rolled a boulder over my foot. All I can say is thank bog for steel toe boots, because at least I still had a foot, but goddamn did that hurt. So I’m hopping around, cursing and swearing, not really at anyone, just in pain. Evidently I said something blasphemous.I got informed by our unit leaders that I’d offended dear Princess, and that she’s refusing to work with me again until I apologize.Me: Okay.FUL: So…aren’t you going to apologize?Me: No.FUL: But you have to!Me: That isn’t what you said. Princess nearly cost me a foot. I don’t want to work with her either. I don’t even need an apology, just keep her spoiled useless ass the fuck away from me.It was shortly after that I decided that they just weren’t paying me enough to deal with the bullshit. I’d much rather have done the job with Boy Scouts.Worst job I’ve ever had.
