We're still running on "training center" mode where you can find hundreds of institutes in the country where you go, attend a lecture and leave - and in the end they provide you handbook that provides answers to the questions that are certificationsThe solution is to plan your own exercises. Follow the advice Ganapathi Devappa provided in the other answer.Find what you need to learn. Data science is vast.Plan your curriculum with some help of professionals. Tell them where you stand. Ask them where you should be going.Find good courses and books. This might be tricky. Out of a hundred tech books in my cabinet, half of them are a waste of time - but don't remorse over it and keep going with the better ones.Study. Practice. Code. Read papers. Follow blogs. Ask questions.

Mostly people who did their Undergrads from non-IIT college join M.tech programme and that’s logical also. In IIT Roorkee , there is no such big burden or pressure over students in any of the branches.Talking about the M.tech in Computer Science and Engineering, I can sum up the 2 years as follows:1st Sem:You have got 4 subjects in your curriculum.You have 2 labs(Programming Lab and Project Lab).You have 3 or 4 classes of each subject and 1 lab period for both lab, every week.You will have opportunities to give interviews for Internships in prestigious companies like Amazon,Google,Microsoft, Flipkart, IBM, Qualcomm, CISCO and many more.Then you will enjoy the Cultural Fest “THOMSO” in the month of October or November. This will be highly entertaining for all.No TAs duties.Give exams and pass them. Your semester is over. It will be easy for all and no much pressure is there.2nd Sem:Again you have 4 subjects.No LabsYou have to do Literature Review of your seminar work and you will be provided a guide from you department under whom you want to work.Some courses will have course project(2 of them will have it surely)Enjoy TechFest.Give your exams and pass it. Again no any rigorous work is required to to get good marks. Just be smart enough and study.No TAs duties.Semester Over3rd and 4th Sem:Here comes the most important semester of your life, 3rd Sem. Companies will visit campus in the months of Oct-Nov-Dec. So all you have got are Summers time to prepare for them. So students prepare with full dedication and their dedications and hard work pays off as they get very nice placements. Professors don’t ask for much work during 3rd Sem and allow us to focus on our placements.Almost all of the students get placed till December first week. Some of them get PPO and others who sat in placement, get placed in awesome package giving companies.Now the most interesting semester of your life begins, that is 4th Semester. You enjoy this semester in as many ways as possible. Although you have to work on your thesis too and complete it. But anyhow it gets completed and you explore the Traveller, guitarist and player in you. Overall, you Enjoy the last sem.

You get an exposure to 9 Program electives and not just 1. This implies that almost 20–25% of the total courses are to be taken by your choice.
