How does the graduate admissions process work for international students, and does it help to be an applicant from a country with fewer applicants? I am referring to PhD programs.

Graduate admissions in the United States (for Ph.D. programs) do not have quotas for international students. International students compete on an equal footing with U.S. citizens and residents. All reputable Ph.D. programs in the United States will provide tuition plus a living stipend for students. Do not consider programs that do not carry financial support. That said, competition for admission to Ph.D. programs is very intense. In our Ph.D. program in anthropology we will only accept 7 students next year, and we have well over 200 applicants for the program, so you can see how difficult it is to make a decision. This is typical of most Ph.D. programs. What is important is that you understand what Ph.D. training is. Ph.D. training is professional training for people who wish to have careers as researchers. The Ph.D. is not a “trophy” for being smart, nor is it a way to “get a job.” Thus the Ph.D. is awarded for people who have gone through professional training and have shown that they are ready to create new knowledge through research at a standard that will be recognized as fully professional by the best practitioners in research in your field. Simply having an interest in a given field is not sufficient to qualify for admission. You have to show in your application--most clearly in your personal statement-- that you are quite clear about your career goals in pursuing research in your given field as a profession. You first need to do your homework and choose the program or department (NOT the university—many of the best programs are not at “brand name” universities) that is the best fit for your research interests and your projected career trajectory. A good test is to look for the authors of research that you have read and admire—research that inspires you and makes you say to yourself: “Oh, I wish I could work with that researcher!” Maybe you can!Your statement of purpose is the most important part of your application. In it you need to show first that you have seriously thought about training for a research career. Second you need to show how training in your chosen field will help you achieve your career goals. Third you need to show why training at your chosen department or program will help you achieve those goals. Here you need to name specific names of professors with whom you hope to work as mentors. This part of your application will show your maturity and sincerity in pursuing this long, difficult training program.Second, you need to demonstrate that you can actually do the work. You demonstrate this by presenting your college record, your GRE test scores (although for some programs they are not particularly important unless they are very low), a sample of your written work, and most importantly *detailed* letters of reference (at least 2–3 pages in length) that speak specifically about your academic work and your potential as a researcher. Specific projects should be cited that show your potential. International students need to pay particular attention to this, because many professors at international schools write very brief, unhelpful letters even if they like and want to help a student. DO NOT use letters from celebrities, non-academic employers, religious officials or politicians. They are useless. If English is not your first language, you must submit TOEFL scores. This is again, to assure that you can actually do the work necessary for your training. Typically Ph.D. programs look for a TOEFL score of 120. A score below 100 is frequently disqualifying no matter how excellent the academic record, because the student is likely not to be able to keep up with reading and writing at the intense level needed for Ph.D. training. Finally, you need to apply to more than one program. Graduate admissions is very competitive. For the Ph.D. schools generally only admit students they can support financially, and this number is limited—typically 7–10% of all applications. Finding at least 5–6 excellent programs to which you can apply willIf you follow these guidelines and choose your graduate program carefully, and you have an adequate background, you will undoubtedly succeed in admissions.Good luck

Is it worth it to hire an immigration lawyer to process a visa application for Australia?

If you or anyone you want to migrate with in your family have any of the following complexities …the answer is yes:I’m going to answer this as best I can as a former legal secretary to migration lawyers. I am not a lawyer this is not professional advice it’s just my observations. If I had my way my country would be far kinder to potential migrants but fact of the matter is for many trying to move to Australia is ridiculously hard.My country is going to sound like a snobby arsehole country, and it kind of is in this regard. The UN are not best pleased with our practices (cough*indefinite detention*cough) and as a citizen I can say it’s embarrassing and devastating the way we have flouted human rights issues to maintain “border control”.On to my ramble!Criminal record - this was once a prerequisite of moving to Australia, back when the only settlers they could wrangle up were convicts. How soon we forget! Now it’s actually detrimental to your application even though we have gross humans like Palmer trying to get ahead in politics.Age: if you are over 55 or any of your family members are at time of application (applications can take years to process) you better be wealthy and able to prove that they won’t be a burden in our glorious welfare system. We don’t give our old age pittance to just anyone.Qualifications and skills: these need to be recognised by our departments as being : credible and useful. Whether or not you can skip in as a skilled professional depends on if Australia has your job listed as one we are in need of at the time of application. Of course that can change so midway through an application you can become more eligible or suddenly ineligible if we change the skilled occupations list. Skilled occupation listKeep an eye on that one ^ or try to.Sponsorship: to waive offshore application processes your sponsor needs to prove simultaneously that they can’t live without you and that they can support you if you land on our shores. Pfft. Try to get around that bit of paper work without a migration lawyer - and you may end up with a three year travel ban if not handled correctly. There needs to be proof of exclusivity and a genuine relationship if it be romantic or proven DNA link if biological. Your sponsor can’t have sponsored other romantic partners in quick succession either so make sure they haven’t got old flames they tried to get in within the last few years.Work sponsorship: your potential boss also has to simultaneously prove they can’t run their business without you and that they are capable of supporting your migration and employment. Go figure. Again the sponsor has an obligation or 500 to meet in order for your application to progress and there are lazy and unscrupulous sponsors out there so be careful.Health: if you or your migrating family members have a health condition you need super human insurance, fabulous wealth to prove you won’t be a burden - or to flat out hide the health issue. Good luck doing that with invasive medical testing and biometric measurements make it impossible to have a relative undergo the tests. If you fudge any part of your application for any of the above reasons or just mess up on a form you can be found to be providing “false or misleading” information or documentation - at any stage of your application you can get a rejection of application or cancellation of your bridging visa followed by a 3 year ban on travel / reapplication. PIC4020 is no joke and impossible to get around without a great migration lawyer and possibly a barrister. Providing accurate informationUnless you have a very straightforward application, experience with ever changing Australian migration laws and a solid experienced sponsor, yes I would recommend at least getting the advice of an Australian migration lawyer in filing your application. Even if you need to make contact from overseas a registered MARA approved migration lawyer is your safest bet. Migration Institute of AustraliaAgain - this is not legal advice just observations of some potential hold ups to the process that I have seen clients very encounter over the 5 years I had working for migration lawyers.Best of luck to you I really hope your Aussie dream comes true. It’s a great place once you are (legally) here.LuceX
