Fission-driven rockets were defiantly experimented with in the past. The concept would be to heat a gas, by passing it over a fission core. The hot gas exited the cone of the rocket (read up on the MINERVA project). Cool. But, there are 3 companies in the United States that are pursuing Fusion space engines:MSNW (founded by Dr. John Slough in ~1994 in Seattle Washington)Princeton Fusion Systems (spun out last year from Princeton Satellite systems).Helicity Space (Founded in 2017 in Berkeley California).Of the 3 companies Helicity Space has one of the coolest approaches I have seen in the last 5 years. Their design uses magnetic reconnection to quickly heat plasma to fusion conditions. Re-connection dumps as much as 45% of the energy from the magnetic field into heating the plasma to nuclear fusion conditions. Tokamak energy is currently using this process to heat its’ ST-40 spherical tokamak. The Helicity drive is shown below.The machine is based off of the MOCHI experiment at the University of Washington (see below). This experiment was set up to study the phenomena of magnetic reconnection in jets - not for fusion or rockets. But when researchers realized that reconnection could make plasma hot enough to fuse, they realized this could be used for a rocket!They envisioned the Helcity-drive: a fusion-driven rocket. This space engine has 6 stages:Formation. Forming a plasmoid (think a semi-stable DNA looking loop of plasma) from multiple jets.Moving. Moving that structure, by varying the containing magnetic field using the loops of superconductors around the device.Compression. Pushing the plasmoid through a magnetic nozzel, which compresses it to fusion and reconnection conditions all at once.Re-connection. The fields of the plasmoid, reconnect, dumping their energy into the plasma (magnetic fields contain a great deal more energy than electric fields).Fusion. When the plasma is suddenly heated and compressed, it will fuse. It is unclear at this point what the neutron output would be.Exhaust. The hot gas and fusion products would jet out the back of the ship.Also - part of the fusion power can be used to power the ship itself - meaning you can run the whole spacecraft off of this!!As Dmitrii and Micheal pointed out the main problems are:Heat. Heat on the whole ship would be a problem. Space is terrible at removing heat. There is no air to whisk the energy away. It only leaves by light emission - so you must build “sails” or “fins” to drive up surface area.Neutrons. Fusion makes neutrons and these “beat up” the reactor chamber, making it radioactive. You can build your thruster walls out of Tungsten-Carbide, which is a hard, tough metal with a high melting point to deal with this. The Helicity team wants to add a liquid lead-lithium blanket to help with this - but the blanket would be impacted by the superconducting fields.Charge. You can deal with this problem. Plasma leaving the ship is charge either (+) or (-). If more (-) charge leaves in the rocket exhaust, the whole ship can be charged (+). This can Screw up your on-board circuitry. The way you deal is by neutralizing the exhaust before it exits the ship. You can see this neutralizer on Hall Effect Thrusters (marked with a orange arrow).Superconductors & Neutrons. Nobody really knows yet how superconductors and neutrons will fully interact - this is a major area of research in fusion right now - but it probably won’t be good. Superconductivity is basically a quantum mechanical effect - it is basically where a long metal chain of atoms form a super-orbital, which electrons can fly through.This Helicity drive is new. The company was founded only within the last 2 years, the concept was only patented in the last 18 months and the first concept papers were only published in August.
