Not useless by design, but useless because the Chain of Command banned its use: The boonie cap.This piece of headgear provides full coverage from the sun on all sides of your head. However, because our Battalion Commander at the time didn’t like SF and considered this to be part of their kit and wouldn’t allow us to wear it. I could’ve bought that excuse better if it hadn’t also been a mandatory piece of equipment according to the Battalion packing list and an inspectable item during layouts.

Current Drill Sergeant here.So the packing list has nothing to do with showing the drill sergeant you can follow directions. We do not care what you pack. We have seen kids come in with the clothing on their back, and we have seen kids carry everything they own. It doesn't matter to us.Now your cell phone does matter. You will have to make a phone call when you arrive. There are no payphones. If you have no phone you're at the mercy of your battle buddies to let you use their phone. There are also phone calls strategically placed throughout the cycle, particularly at the end. When you get to AIT you will have many more opportunities. If there is an emergency at home, or if a financial issue comes up that you didn't square away before you left, the phone will be useful.Plus you will have time between arrival and when you can get to the troop store so you'll need stuff to last until then, particularly when it comes to hygiene.
