BEIJING: Shenzhen is one of China’s most modernized cities, but we should not be surprised to learn that other cities in the country might be more hi-tech savvy. Chinese President Xi Jinping has emphasized an innovations culture to promote the domestic science and hi-tech industries.Shenzhen has gained recognition as China’s Silicon Valley, the home base for a number of hi-tech giants including, Huawei Corp., Tencent Holdings, Baidu Inc., and DJI international. The initiative is called the ‘Greater Bay Area’ to inter-connect hi-tech collaboration among cities in southern China’s Guangdong province, Hong Kong and Macao.The land area covers 56,000 sq. Km with over 70 million people residing there. Experts believe the Greater Bay Area has a total regional GDP (gross domestic product) value - 10 trillion Chinese yuan (US$1.43 trillion) as of last February.Beijing’s master plan is to transform the southern bay into a wold-class city-cluster, international technology and innovation center, as well as becoming a more livable and business-friendly environment. Tax concessions are proposed in order to attract more foreign talent.We can expect to see new major infrastructure such as the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link. Both the bridge and rail lines started operations last year. Accordingly, many cities in Guangdong province are just as modern as Shenzhen.Shanghai deserves some recognition as well. It’s China’s financial capital and may likely become the Asia-Pacific finance hub within a decade or so. Shanghai must stay modern, urbanized and innovative to attract more talent and foreign enterprises to work there. I visited Shanghai a few years ago and was impressed with its very cosmopolitan atmosphere.Chengdu is another Chinese city that is eager to stand at the forefront of China’s innovation culture. Chengdu-based companies are playing instrumental roles in developing 5G networks to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) and smart technologies to the healthcare sector. The city has been very big on telemedicines, which will revolutionize medical treatment - via teleconferencing meetings with patients and doctors.Xiamen on the southeast coastline of Fujian province seeks to become a national leader in the software technologies sector along with developing AI.
