PDF Editor FAQ

How much complexity does the afterburner add to a jet engine?

Quite a bit more than you’d think. The problem is that heating up the exhaust of a jet engine doesn’t do anything by itself. A jet engine is a heat engine. You have to compress gas, add heat, and then expand it. The expansion converts some of that added heat into velocity and that’s how you get thrust. The first jet engines were simple turbojets: compressor, burner, turbine. The air just in front of the burner is at highest pressure [thanks Mark], but not all the pressure is used expanding through the turbine. A fair bit is left over, and that is used to expand the exhaust through the nozzle. The nozzle is simple because the speed of sound in the hot exhaust is quite high (speed of sound increases with the square root of temperature [thanks Alex]), so that the flow is subsonic, even though it’s going substantially faster than the speed of sound in the cold ambient air outside the engine. A subsonic nozzle is just a converging section of pipe. If you are willing to throw away a little performance, there is no need for any variability in the geometry, you just optimize the exit diameter for one particular operating point. If you add an afterburner, you just spray fuel into the turbine exhaust and heat that exhaust back up to the maximum temperature that your metal can stand. After that, expand as usual. This is not going to be efficient because the heat is added to air at fairly low pressure, so you can’t turn much of that heat into kinetic energy via expansion. There is another limit, even before you start to melt the afterburner and nozzle. You’ve added specific energy to the gas, and now it accelerates more. It wants to go supersonic. The problem is that it can’t go supersonic in a converging pipe (your simple nozzle). Instead, it expands and accelerates to the local speed of sound, at which point the pipe is sonically choked. No more thrust is possible. So, to get more thrust, you need a nozzle that converges until the flow is sonically choked, and then diverges. The supersonic flow will expand and accelerate in a diverging nozzle. The trouble is that if the throat isn’t sonically choked, then subsonic flow will get into that diverging nozzle and SLOW DOWN.If you want to be able to throttle the engine up and down, you’ll need to be able to vary the diameter of the nozzle throat, which means you will now need a complex mechanism which contracts and expands, and can tolerate the gas temperatures and vibration in your afterburner. This mechanism is very complicated. The second problem is keeping the afterburner from melting. The low-performance way is to just not burn much fuel in there. You can also supply air to the afterburner at higher pressure than the interior of the afterburner, and have that air pour through small holes in the interior surface. This keeps a thin sheet of cooler air against the interior surface of the afterburner. But you’ve reduced the pressure inside the afterburner, so you have less expansion with which to convert temperature to kinetic energy. Worse still, when you aren’t using the afterburner you still have this efficiency loss.So the best way to run your afterburner is with two air supplies. The larger one comes from the turbine exhaust, and sees little or no pressure loss. The smaller, cooler, higher pressure air stream comes from bleed air from the compressor. This air stream cools the wall of the afterburner and nozzle. An afterburner like this can heat the gas inside hundreds of degrees above the melting point of the metal, so that huge amounts of energy can be added (and converted to kinetic energy). The two-stream scheme was first used in the SR-71, which is why it could cruise for hours at full afterburner. Most planes are limited to a minute or two.

How does awareness work?

Awareness works by being focused into an attention. Without that focus, the awareness is just a diffuse, cloud-like presence, with no awareness “of”. But you probably want more details. This is not exactly the easiest thing to convey in words but let’s see what we can succeed at conveying.Everything in the universe is made of energy in one form or another. What all forms have in common is that they vibrate at some frequency. When two different “notes” on the scale of energy interact, be it the periodic table of elements (notice how “scaled” it is, even has octaves) or the spectrum of EM radiant energy, a third vibration appears between them. We can call them the parent vibrations and the offspring. (Take note that there is one pair of notes which do not produce vibrational offspring, it’s the octave interval). That third vibration in turn interacts with the parent vibrations to produce more vibrations (each time the amplitude is reduced as the energy gets spread out), and so on. The whole group of vibrations forms a kind of entity, and that is awareness. However, until there are sufficient number of interacting entities, all vibrating in unison but at different frequencies (wavelengths) there is no awareness “of” anything, kind of like potential energy vs kinetic energy.Once that critical mass of vibrations which are in close enough proximity that they effect each other, the basic rudiments of awareness begin to coalesce, because it is the response to a vibration, from the third vibration (which acts as a medium of transmission so they can interact) which is what we call awareness. You could say that awareness, at some very rudimentary level, is an inherent property of all energy in all its forms. But it is not a version of awareness that performs any function so it wouldn’t be recognizable as awareness, but it is the basic substrate for the animal version of awareness. In order for two or more vibrations to interact, they must converge together. It’s in the act of convergence in which awareness first appears. An animal is the convergence of many forms of energy and when awareness emerges in an animal with a brain (even insects have this convergence we call animal awareness and the emergent property of focused awareness we call attention) that brain must provide signals (vibrations) for the awareness (now attention) to be aware of. That’s what we call consciousness, the act of focusing the attention on a signal, such as sensations, emotions, and thoughts. It’s all about energy, how it vibrates, how vibrations converge to interact and form new vibrations, and how the new vibrations interact with the original vibrations to form a matrix of vibrating energies, each a little bit aware of each other.

Are gods omniscient? Do they know our thoughts? Do all 33-crore gods know everything? If not, then which god/goddess are omniscience?

I am happy to answer the question. In Hindu thought based on Bhagavad Gita: 8–13, and Mandykya Upanishad, ‘om iti ekaksharam Brahma … is symbolized in ॐ , comprising five parts (1-akara, 2-ukara, 3-makara, the subsumed dis-similar curves, and the independent 4-bindu and 5-nadam, see illustration) written Devanagari script-ओम्, spelled ‘Om’ understood as Brahman the unborn ‘Ajah’ (verse-11, Vishnusahasranama) is GOD (Genesis-Order-Destruction).God is ‘Om’ and Omnipotent, Omniscient, Omnipresent etc,They know our thoughts. Gods in plural number is wrong.33 ‘Koti’ in Brihadaranyaka Upanishad is explained there in as Number 33 ‘Koti’ refers to the following Devas meaning deities: Sanskrit word ‘Koti’ according to Monier williams has got more than 15 meanings including ‘crore’, and selecting ‘crore’ as equivalent to Koti is not contextually correct. God is ONE, deities can be many. Absolute is not manifest; and what ever is manifest is in three dimensions to the binocular vision. Time is the fourth dimension but invisible.1. Adityas: twelve,2. Vasus: eight,3. Rudras: eleven,4. Indra and Prajapati: two = 33 ‘Koti’ (Brihadaranayaka Upanishad Chapter I, hymn 9, verse 2);God ‘Om’ is to be understood as life-principle, manifest as material energy: carrying positive, negative and neutral charge. In Physics try to understand atom, Quantum and string theories to understand the basic concepts.God is sound-vibrations-converged in to atomic-singularity, transcending or descending by clock-wise or counter-clock-wise movement of energized waves to be experienced by us…..God bless you
