Stop calling black people who don't fit your criteria “coconuts” or “oreos”.This is me.I'm well educated.I mostly speak English.I hang out with people of ANY race.And I'm still black.I'm tired of the use of the word “coconut” whenever one refers to a black person with qualities wrongfully attributed only to white people.And in my experience this is done almost entirely by other black people. In my case even my own relatives.When I achieved Top in South Africa and Second in The World for Cambridge English language and Literature, I was celebrated heavily but also playfully teased for being such a “coconut” that I beat white people at their own language.That doesn't make me a coconut. That makes me smart. Black people can be smart too.I've also been called a coconut by cousins.“Black on the outside, but white on the inside.”I'm sorry, but what does that even mean?Is it white to be well educated?Is it white to speak good English?Is it white to befriend people of other races?Calling me a “coconut” isn't an insult to me, but to black people as a whole. We're saying that only white people can achieve certain things. Only white people can dress a certain way or like a certain type of music. Only white people can speak good English.As if we're incapable of achieving these things.WE put OURSELVES into this box. And because of that while white parents are asking their children how well they did, we're asking our children if they passed. And then we complain about white people looking down on us…It's crazy how much we like to yell and complain about how unfair our lives are, but when we see someone actually trying to do something different we're quick to tease them.It's crazy how I've been mocked for speaking English better than Xhosa or Zulu, but when the time comes the people who mocked me are asking for my help to pass their essays.It's crazy how the coconuts in African countries are mocked and teased, but the ones in Hollywood like Idris Elba, Michael B. Jordan and Will Smith are admired.Make up your minds.Being black isn't a language or a mindset. Being black isn't a dress code or music genre. Being black isn't a behavior or financial status.Being black is having a certain amount of melanin in your skin.That's all it is. If I were a black man born in China, I'd still be black regardless of what culture I adopted.This does not make you black.It makes you a gangster.We should stop letting the colors of our faces dictate the colors of our minds.Our mind has no race.
