Would any true abolitionist ever take a cut of the sales off slavery and consider it a favor to everyone? Come on.I think it’s a practice round for the reader as well as for Dany. Do you see what she’s actually doing under all the flashy, pretty trappings? The thing is, slaughtering Astapor should have been everyone’s wake up call, but it was framed so subtly (only a short command from Dany to the Unsullied) that almost no one caught it. Some people like Kelsey L. Hayes got it from the very beginning with Mirri. It took others of us longer, but some people still buy into Dany even after she slaughtered King’s Landing. GRRM’s ultimate point was to demonstrate that a truly fantastic and complex and deeply sympathetic character can also be a murderous tyrant, and that millions of people both real and fictional can be duped into cheering her on. He made Daenerys so personable for a reason, but the old axiom “actions speak louder than words” sure applies here too.
